Wally B
Sorry if this was mentioned before...... I was procrastinating on a project and somehow navigated to Wikipedia and found a new link for Akron Soccer.. Not the Zips mind you, but a new PDL team that will begin play at LEE JACKSON FIELD in 2011. Colors haven't been announced yet, nickname is the "Summit Assault" Looks like the first game will be at home on MAY14'th. WIKI - PDL league page We have been placed in the Great Lakes Division with the familiar Michigan Bucks, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Toronto among others... AMFC 2011 schedule Here's the Wiki page, looks like we already have a coach! An Englishman: Denzil Antonio WIKI - Akron Metro FC Here's their website. Appears they've been running the youth leagues for some time, so I guess the new PDL team is expanding thier reach. I like it, apparently somebody listens to my suggsetions AkronMetroFC.org
ZachTheZip
I suppose they're replacing the Cleveland Internationals?
Wally B
Possibly, but wow, what's going on with soccer in Cleveland?????? I watched a couple of Carolina Dynamo matches in Greensboro, NC. I would guess attendance averages between 5-700/game but don't quote me on that, it's been a while. Point being, if AMFC lands a couple of Zips each year I'm sure the "Nation" will support the team

Crew8
Yes, Akron Metro FC purchased the Cleveland Internationals and will be playing matches at Lee Jackson Field and St. V St. Mary's Soccer Field under the name of Summit Assault. And Cleveland will be getting an NPSL Team in 2012. But I guess the League might be reconstructed for 2012. They should be announcing something in the next few weeks. They'll be playing somewhere on the west side of Cleveland. I guess AFC means "A Fan's Club" AFC Cleveland AFC Cleveland - Facebook Lots of good things for soccer in the NE Ohio area

BTW -- How does the sale effect George Nanchoff -- was the whole club sold?

scottditzen
Whoa...Summit Assault.... I am not digging that name.
Spin
No doubt. "Akron Assault" sound better. Or the name I've been using in FIFA, "Akron Attack".

Blue & Gold
Why not just call the team what they're already named (I'm confused about that one anyhow) the Akron Metro Football Club? Sounds very european. I've noticed that in America we name our teams something like the Bears, or Eagles, or Tigers, etc. Where as in Europe they seem to simply call their teams _______ Football Club, or _______ Rugby Club, right? ZachTheZip
Does anybody know about what this might be? Cleveland is apparently also getting a new team, but it's unclear what level they will be at..

That's the old leagues. The new ones (WFL, USFL, MLS) and some expansion teams use a lot of cutesy non-verbal team names (Crew, Fire, Revolution, Union, Galaxy). Especially in soccer, for some reason.
Spin
I've heard AFC Cleveland will be affiliated with a historic English football club. Hmmm, Randy Lerner's Aston Villa?

Its not Villa, it's a League 2 team, supposedly the team is located in Lancashire. I think it might be Bury, but I could be wrong.
scottditzen
Exactly!! It's a known fact that all of the good or original team names have already been taken by the hundreds of pre-existing teams. The MLS has finally realized this and are ditching stupid names like "Kansas City Wiz." Heritage names like Whitecaps, Cosmos and Sounders on the other hand, are awesome. Summit Assault? That's an arena football team. Akron Metro Football sounds terrific in comparison. Why not just call the team what they're already named (I'm confused about that one anyhow) the Akron Metro Football Club? Sounds very european. I have been kicking around Akron since the late '70s and never heard of them. Who are Akron Arsenal? Now a team from Ravenna should be called.... naw, that's too easy! Cleveland is apparently also getting a new team, but it's unclear what level they will be at.. Read up above. NPSL in 2012 So it's a new NPSL, not the NPSL that was formed from the AISA survivors and the ashes of the MISL, which later changed it's name to MISL. But a new NPSL. An outdoor NPSL. But not the original NPSL, which merged with the USA to frm the NASL. The original NASL, not the now NASL. Which is a bunch of teams that broke away from the USL. Awwww to hell with it. I'll just stick to college...

Z.I.P.
USL Officially Announces Akron Metro FC to the PDL Follow AMFC on Facebook I know next to nothing about the Premier Development League, except that it is dominated by college-age players -- kind of a soccer version of the Cape Cod League, I guess. The Chicago Fire Premier is also mentioned on the web. Does that mean MLS Academies have teams playing?

Z.I.P.
Akron Metro FC officially announced today Interview with Head Coach Denzil Antonio Fantastic to see Denzil Antionio's return to the home of his best action. It was a joy to watch his play on the pitch at Lee Jackson. I thought I had seen his name as a coach with the Dallas Texans Red, the top national boys youth club. I'm sure there was an ex-Zip coaching there someplace.
