johnnyzip84
Part 1: Producing Pro Players, Maintaining Academic Integrity
MDZip
Nice find JohnnyZ. Here is the part you have to absolutely love. A soccer "factory" that actually produces real student-athletes. How much better can this get? While the easy conclusion might lead you to believe that Akron is little more than a pro-soccer player factory, the reality seems to be far more nuanced. Akron head coach Caleb Porter is undoubtedly creating professional athletes, but he's doing it in a way that belies the conventional image of what that means. His teams are regularly among the nation's academic leaders. In 2009-10 they posted a team GPA of 3.33, eighth best in the country, and the semester the Zips won the 2010 College Cup they posted a 3.51 team GPA. In Porter's five years at Akron, seven Zips have been named Academic All-America and 16 have been named Academic All-Conference.

MDZip
It seems DC United fans have taken a vested interest in the Zips, they also have an article on their site about what would happen if the 2010 Zips played the 2010 United. Funniest comment from the article: Halftime: In the locker room at the half, the president of the University of Akron extends Caleb Porter’s contract another five years, to the year 2068. For ASN, 5% of my hits last month came from that area of the country (Virginia, DC, Maryland). At first I didn't realize why.

jem101
Part 2: Maybe We're the Barcelona of College Soccer Another fantastic article. Too bad there is some troll over there claiming that Akron plays negative football and just packs it in to win at all costs. Couldn't be further from the truth. Besides being , the best thing about Akron is their style of play.

Besides being , the best thing about Akron is their style of play. I've never seen a troll that thinks he knows so much and actually knows so little. His claim that Akron had possession about 37% of the time against UVA two years ago is laughable. UVA had all 11 behind the ball the entire second half and overtimes. What a joke. At first I could scarcely believe what I was reading. In the 2009 final, perhaps UVA had better scoring chances, but AU definitely had much more of the ball. From where is this negative soccer comment coming? What is this person watching?
