Blue & Gold
New offer reported: JUCO DT Roland Johnson This guy looks to pass the eyeball test (from his one picture here). If we don't bring in some serious JUCO DT's we're going to get absolutely obliterated straight up the middle next year. The only 2 remaining DT's on our roster are both freshmen!!! Frosh DT Dajour Morris looked good. IMHO he passes the eyeball test. James Price, however, IMHO, didn't pass the eyeball test. He just looked kinda overweight. Who knows, he might hit the weightroom hard this offseason & lose some baby fat. But none-the-less, we need some serious muscle front & center. xu9697
ZTZ or whoever...is this our current up-to-date as far as we know list?: Committed to Akron: ATH Daryan Martin, Princeton HS QB Steve Franco, Tyrone Area HS FS Benny Cunningham, Medina HS WR Elijah St. Hilaire, Palisades Park HS OL Rodney Carroll, Hargrave Military Academy JUCO CB D.Q. Johnson, Iowa Western C.C. S DeAndre Scott, Hargrave Military Academy I thought somewhere there was mention of 9 committed, but based on a quick look this appears to be the most accurate list (thanks for all the work here, ZTZ). Lance1969
Going into a "Dead Period" and with JuCo players able to committ not to mention the complete lack of talent on Defense (basing this on being at the games and watching CBs afraid to hit) side of the ball like the idea of offering players on the D side of the ball is great. Next week new Coach is named when the "Dead Period" is over offense skill players will be sought based on the style of Offense the new Coach runs. ZachTheZip
I can't confirm, so I'll put this up as a rumor instead of adding him to the list. LB Shane Nastahowski from Greenwich, CT is possibly committed to the Akron Zips. He is supposedly re-thinking his decision.

Lance1969
Can only home that when new Coach starts building recruiting class of 2013 (we are screwed for 2012) Zips staff takes a more realistic approach to targeted players. Competing against the Big Ten & East for talent does not work at Akron. Need to go after initially that OL or DL that can play ball but might be too short for BCS school standards. ZipsFanForever
Here's a local 2012 recruit that I think has flown under the radar...Kevin Enright. I've known his family ever since his uncle Tom played football for the Zips back in the 70s. I was able to watch some of his games this season and I don't know how he hasn't been recruited heavier. Listed at 6'4" 240 with 4.7 speed. I talked to his coaches at Walsh Jesuit and they say he's one of, if not the best TE they have ever coached, which is saying something because they have been their 30 years. So there is still a chance for 2012. But it is going to take a different approach than Ianello used. Here's a link to Enright's highlights:
ZipperRoo44
Some of Akron's best players over the last decade have come from Walsh Jesuit and the Federal League in Stark County. Walkons were a hallmark of the success in the mid 2000's. Should be again. New coach has to recruit, but also develop talent.

johnnyzip84
I'm not sure if I've seen anything about this guy or not before on this thread. He's Kyle McKinnon, a RB from New London, Connecticut. UA is apparently his only D-1 offer, and who knows whether the hiring of Bowden will influence this or not. Lance1969
DQ Johnson decommits to go to North Texas instead Can not blame Johnson for switiching to North texas, Akron had not named Coach when it was time to sign LOI. Spring Ball should be interesting this year, will probably have to limit scrimages due to lack of players.Everyone will be listed on the 2 deep depth chart. GJGood
I am pleased to hear that Coach Bowden wants to have players not only from Northeast Ohio but from all of Ohio, Western PA, and maybe over to Detroit to be his "meat and potatoes". He also said he may get some gazelles from south Florida. While I like this as a general philosophy, I hope Coach Bowden and his new staff will also realize there are some speedy players in that "meat and potatoes" area as well. I also hope that everyone involved will realize that many of the truly high impact MAC players are "under the radar" guys before getting to their college years. I hope this staff is able to recognize the underutilized talent at big time or highly successful high school programs as well as able to find those high talent guys at high school programs that do not always get the noteriety or are just so small that they are sometimes forgotten. I believe there is a good amount of high school talent that falls through the cracks at the smaller high schools as well as at the bigger schools that don't have a long-standing winning tradition. It must have been the head-to-head defeat of VMI that made the difference Seriously, at least it (the VMI offer) shows the kid probably has a pretty good head on his shoulders. We probably can't be overly picky with the 2012 class, although I agree with Terry's statement regarding NOT wanting to just bring in 25 nobodies either. ZippyRulz
LB Mason Monheim commits to Illinois Was he being heavily recruited by Zook and stuck with Illinois or was he looking at Toledo and followed the coach to UI?
