What would you focus on this offseason?

Recommended Posts

O.K. we had some success this pass season, and what is pleasing to me is it could have been better by beating Army, Miami, and Memphis. It's easy to identify what we need personel wise but what would some of you focus on during the offseason with the guys coming back? Personally I would focus on O-line some say the line is fine, but if you can make the O-line great, you can take stress off of the QB, have a running game regardless of who is in the backfield and always walk away with point when in the redzone.

I think the big thing we need to focus on is finding replacements for seniors at key positions and stressing more balance in the offense. We had far to many games this season where we were passing 50-60 times in the game and that really isn't good. I think the o-line is gonna take care of itself. One thing that always makes o-lines better is playing together. This unit should return all 5 starters this season. With a year together under their belt I think this will be a really good unit. We have to be able to find good replacements for guys like Biggs, Hixon, Rohr, Kiki, and Montgomery too.

I would put even more emphasis on the Defense. I know we were top ranked in the league, but it became very apparent this season that the MAC is a confrence of good offenses and bad defenses. I think the same is true for CUSA. If we can put together a great Defense and maintain the current Offense, we'll dominate the MAC. Outside of that, I would like to see some more rotation of younger players in the upcoming season. Depth killed us and with last seasons recruiting class, lets get those boys some playing time and wear down the opponents.

i have to agree with zipsrifle. i think our starters on the defense were fine this year. we had no depth on the dl,and lb's. we need to play some younger guys ,and build some depth. i kow alott of coaches stick with the starters the whole game, but against memphis those guys had to be worn out. you noticed williams was shut down the first half. by the end of the game even the back-up was getting big gains. the only other way to fix this is by running the ball more. i know were not a running team, but we need to be able to get first downs in short yardage. this runs the clock and gives our defense more rest.

Akron's major weakness for 2006 is the kicking game in all areas. This year Sullivan was inconsistent to bad most of the year. He is gone and must be replaced as no one else save Frye and Getsy have punted or pooched for the last 4 years.Swiger is also gone and was pretty good. You could not have had a better guy take over for Zac Derr after the bad Sullivan-PK year in 2002.The kick/punt return and kick/punt coverage units were bad. Wallerstedt was the Special Teams coach and he is gone, which may be a good thing. This unit cost Akron dearly in many games this season.I think Montgomery and Hixon will be losses but since Brookhart is a guru at coaching receivers this should be a reloading situation.I think Alex Allen and Dennis Kennedy will do fine in replacing Biggs. It will not matter who is in the backfield if the offensive line cannot block any better for the backs. The OL is the biggest question mark on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball. Too many penalties and not enough power. Biggs had to lead the nation in yards after contact beacuse his heart got him over 1,000 yards, not the sloppy OL play. The o-line has been my biggest disappointment since Brookhart took over.Quarterback could be Akron U's deepest position with Getsy, Jackson, Ferguson and Jacquemain all returning. Add in some good recruits in the pocket and the Zip signal callers should be set for years to come.On defense Akron needs to find some bigger DB's who can stay with the jump-ball receivers like Memphis had. That unit is much better than they were three years ago but still needs major work. Our LBs were undersized this year but with the kids coming off redshirts and in from the academic sidelines we should be fine. The DL is the strength of this team and it is the best in the MAC.I see 7-8 wins minimum next year and another MAC East title.

Swiger ranked 7th in draft Go to the defensive prospects section on the left-hand side of the screen and select kickers...he is now ranked 7thI always thought he was under-rated. That kick against Marshall was as clutch as I witnessed at the RB.

One game winning field goal doesn't make you good consistency does. And in the Bowl game we consistenly had bad field position. The kicking game is 1/3 of the game I don't know if most people realize that. We need a solid kicking game..

I think the kicking game could actually be better next season. we have a solid place kicker that transfered from Wisconsin and will play next year along with sullivan's back this year. yes hildreth needs to improve but he will be a good punter. Also we have a recruit coming from Mentor with a pretty good leg. As for runningback we will be set with the Kennedy, alex Allen, and others. reciever will still be a good position for us with Arthur, Long, and look for the emergance of Jermaine Lindsey. The OL will develop and get better next season. Our defense will be better next season we are losing only white and rohr. Along with Elie who didnt play due to injury while we made our run. DB is where we will need to start recruiting bigger guys. we have quality players there now but they are just to small.

Hey Doc...........Did you expand those rankings? No 23 or 32..............Garrett Wolfe was ranked 27th among RB's..............wow.
I looked at a few. Your right it looked pretty weak to me.----------------------------------------------------------As for Swiger, I agree that he will not be an NFL kicker. The point was to give someone's perspective that he is thought of as the 7th best senior in the nation. If anybody watched the Penn State, Florida State, Texas field goal and extra attempts in the past week, you might appreciate Swiger a little more.As far as kickoffs. There are ten other people on the kickoff coverage team, they also count.
