ZachTheZip
http://www.ohio.com/sports/120366859.html The link above is the story of four Firestone football players who transferred to Buchtel after their junior year, and consequently became ineligible for their senior season. These kids left Firestone because they thought that Buchtel would give them a better chance at an athletic scholarship. I think their thinking is flawed. If you really are good, the colleges will come to you. It also raises some questions, such as whether colleges take inferior players just because they come from a certain school while ignoring talent from lesser-known schools. I can't imagine any college coach worth his salt would allow himself to be blinded by something like that. But as far as this relates to the Zips we're already recruiting Firestone under Ianello. It's not like if a great player pops up at East or Kenmore we wouldn't notice them, not when they play at the Info a few times a year. For a long time, I've heard about certain city series coaches discouraging kids from considering Akron football and badmouthing us. I think this tactic was being used by Ricky Powers to coerce these four kids into ruining their football careers. He had to mention that they wouldn't get a D-I scholarship at Firestone, something that Akron has proven to be false. That leads into Akron being called less than a D-I school. I have as big of a chip on my shoulder about us getting no respect as anyone, but this is really a stretch. I doubt any City Series coaches go out of their way to discourage interest in UA. If we were worth our weight in feathers on the gridiron right now, we'd have a fair number of local three stars interested in us.

I can tell you from experience that certain city series coaches push kids away from Akron. Some for good reasons (getting them away from potential bad elements that are already in their lives) and some for not so good reasons. Certain coaches at premier programs have pushed players away from Akron to make themselves look better. Its better to say I sent so&so to Michigan State even if he flunks out or never sees the field then it is to say they got them a scholarship at Akron. I see that slowly changing, one of the biggest coaches that was known for this now has an excellent relationship with the University. As far as Powers goes, he's a nice guy and cares about his kids. If anything its boosters from Buchtel that are filling these kids ears with "better chances" and promises.
ZachTheZip
And today's followup in the ABJ. The kids were warned of the consequences, and did it anyway. But to see the school leaders try to defend the kids is wrong.
ZachTheZip
Things are escalating, with Flossie being investigated for abusing a player. It looks pretty obvious to me that this is retaliation from the school district.

It looks pretty obvious to me that this is retaliation from the school district. This kind of action by Flossie is not anything new. He has been guilty of this before and was a big reason he was fired at Barberton. He really is a mean spirited, grumpy, old man. His quote from the first article "over my dead body" showed that. But yeah, nothing new from him.

My Flossie highlight was being awakened by him hitting the floor because he fell out of his chair as he struggled to pass a kidney stone. The best part of this story? During conditioning he wouldn't let his players get water because "water is for the weak". So during this kidney stone passing, Flossie screams out, hurry somebody get me something to drink, I need some water! Antonio Pittman screams out "Hell no Flossie, water's for the weak remember!" Funny stuff, but he was obviously in a lot of pain, they had to take him out in a stretcher. I think we were watching "Patriot" with Mel Gibson that day,
