Ryno aka Menace
Right now no one can deny the success we are having right now..Football, Soccer, and Now Basketball. Is this the future of the Universityh of Akron? Across the board improvement in competitive play?! Or are we experiencing a "goodyear" no pun intended....anyway. Some haters out there are saying we are just experiencing a lucky season. And I quote "Akron just improved from bad to decent, once teams take you seriously you guys will go back to your losing history." What would be your reply, mine was a swift kick to the nose, and a war chant "Fear the Roo, Biatch!"
liljc
Athletics at Akron have been improving for the last several seasons. This is a trend that I believe will continue. The football, soccer, track and basketball teams are all viable and legitimate Mid American Conference contenders. Outsiders can say and believe what they may, but it appears to me that the Zips are here to stay. Now, let's get that stadium built! :macc:
Wally B
The surrest sign that your teams are on the rise, is everone else paying attention and telling you.... you're going to fail! Points to be taken Akron Soccer has always been good Facilities and good coaching have created an emerging football program Thank god the entire St.V/M team didn't go to the NBA. Good recruting has helped the bbteam, but i believe this to be independent of the fb programs success. Time, patience, and how well we keep our noses clean will dictate our long term success! :macc:
zip37
I agree w/Wally B the detractors come out of the woodwork when you get a good (read excellent) administration from pres on along the line, who are able to pick good coachesso time will tell them that they are WRONG. Seems they are jealous of our success and are wishing that we were back at the immediate post Dennison/Huggins era, i.e. flat on our backsides & the doormat of the conference(s).With ball ammunition lock & load. msopher
Akron's success will only continue to build. If the athletic teams can recruit well each year, Akron will be one of the top schools in the conference for a long time.
Captain Kangaroo
My 5 years on campus saw 1 NCAA berth and 2 NIT's for the hoops team. Also an NCAA finals appearance from the soccer team. There were also high hopes for the football team and it's new "big time 1-A coach" Gerry Faust. You know the rest:Hoops: Coleman Crawford...Dan Hipsher...zero MAC touney wins at the Gund...many losing seasons in the past 20 years.Football: When we were good we were mediocre, and when we were bad we were horrible. No championships.Soccer: Has sustained a good competitive level, but only this year did we approach the level of the mid-eighties.In hindsight, I think were are supremely more qualified to sustain our competitive success now than we were in the mid-eighties. The post-Huggins basketball program was doomed by the lack of a quality conference and the hiring of bad coaches. We are now entrenched in a very good hoops conference with teams that our local fan base knows (not Wisconsin-Milwaukee, for example). Our coach is very good. The football team finally has top-notch training facilities. It has a top-notch, on-campus stadium on the way. It has a sweet campus to sell recruits. And, it has the backing of a quality President. The soccer team will roll on.Unless Mack Rhodes is another Helsel, I can't see us stepping back. We may not have years like 2005-6 EVERY season, but I firmly believe the foundation for sustained success in all the major sports is firmly established.
