bigzipguy Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Lady Zips will be at Ann Arbor, for a first round match-up with the Wolverines. I have been watching the selection show on NCAA.com. Michigan is one of the teams hosting first and second round match-ups. Quote
GoZipsGoZips Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Yep... Tough draw... Here's the bracket: http://www.ncaa.com/brackets/tennis-women/d1/2011 Michigan was seeded #1 in the Big Ten Tournament... but lost 4-3 to Northwestern in the Championship match... http://www.bigten.org/sports/w-tennis/big1...ennis-body.html Akron played in the Spartan Invitational earlier this year... did well as Zara won the Singles title and teamed up with Angelina to win the Doubles title... http://www.gozips.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPS...TCLID=205001532 but Michigan is a different story. Michigan beat MSU 6-1 in the regular season. Here's another way to look at the difference in MSU and Michigan: http://www.bigten.org/sports/w-tennis/spec.../010611aaa.html http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/tennis-women/d1 Good Luck Girls... Quote
GoZipsGoZips Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Just looked at a few interesting matches from the past year... First... from GoZips.com... Akron at the USTA/ITA Regional hosted by Big Blue in the fall... http://www.gozips.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPS...TCLID=205017818 In the day's singles main draw competition, Angelina Jogasuria topped DePaul's Kelsey Lawson 6-0, 6-4 in the opening round, but was eliminated by Ohio State's Paloma Escobedo 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4 in the round of 32. Harutyunyan earned a bye into the round of 32, where she lost 6-4, 7-5 to Michigan's Brooke Bolender. So Zara lost a very close match to Michigan's #2 Singles player... 6-4, 7-5 and... Angelina beat a DePaul girl and then lost to Ohio State's #1 Singles girl... 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4 Plus... the Big Ten... where #1 Seed and 10th ranked Michigan beat Ohio State... 2011 Big Ten Tournament Ann Arbor, Mich. We have a nice little soccer rivalry with Michigan now... how about a Ladies Tennis Rivalry too...? Quote
Zip_ME87 Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Michigan has a beautiful tennis complex which also happens to be next to their soccer complex...nice place for another Zips' victory! Quote
UAZipster0305 Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 I love the budding rivalry with UM. Facing #10 Michigan means that the committee ranked us 54/64 teams to make the tournament. Impressive considering we didn't finish the season ranked in the top 75 and not much lower than Boston University who whooped us good 7-0 early in the season. Our other bad loss opponents (Brown and Tulane) did not make the Tournament. Now that the program is good, I would love to see the all-time records presented in the match previews next season as has been done for soccer, basketball, and football. Shows that we have a tradition. Some impressive wins over big name schools over the last couple years...Xavier, Cincy, Michigan State, Penn State, and Louisville....OSWho and perhaps Dayton are the only programs in Ohio better than ours...we beat YSU and CSU soundly in the OOC as well. Best of luck ladies! Wonder if UA will bring back men's tennis anytime soon? Would love to see that along with some on-campus indoor and outdoor facilities. Quote
Z.I.P. Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 The Michigan tennis program probably receives more $$ than Akron basketball. I believe their men have three full-time coaches. Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Zip tennis gets a double dose of love from the Beacon! 1st Story 2nd Story Quote
RootforRoo44 Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 How did they do? they lost 4-0. Three of the matches weren't finished, i assume because they didn't matter due to the rest being swept. The only Zips that were competitive were Angelika Jogasuria, who was up a set and on serve in the second when stopped, and Prang Pantusart, who was just beginning a first-set tiebreaker when play was stopped. Other than that, it was ugly. Quote
Zipmeister Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 The first hint it was going to be ugly was when they told Michigan to prepare to host first AND SECOND round matches. Quote
lilcat19 Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Ugly or not, I was so proud that they made it there. They weren't supposed to win the match, but we were there. This was a HUGE accomplishment for the University of Akron tennis team. Go Zips! Quote
