Roogangs
I dont know where i heard that from but i believe it is due to the fact that he was a pro player in england (training with professional teams even though he did not receive pay) and has to sit out some games as a penalty. Hopefully i am wrong but just relaying what i have heard.
fknbuflobo
I believe the "new kid" from Colombia had been planning on coming to Akron but just needed to pass his English proficiency test. Also, who do we feel will start as attacking mid since Holmes has to sit out the first 7 games? Where did you hear that?? BTW -- the idea that David Mayer is a very good player should not come as any surprise, if you know he started for Wigan's Academy team (U19 I guess). As someone over at BigSoccer boards shouted out -- get him a Green Card fast, the USA needs a left back BAD. Z.I.P., Mayer looked really skinny to me. Good, but scrawny. Cristian Arboleda is already 22, a grown man. What is this business about Holmes having to miss 7 games? I do not believe it. Why would he transfer here knowing that beforehand? Maybe he did not know this would happen. I think it has to do with now being at a D1 NCAA school vs his previous NAIA (which it did not matter). Needless to say, he will get quality minutes and more than likely start once he returns from suspension. He was probably willing to take the suspension knowing he would get half a season and postseason to make his MLS/Pro statement.

I do not buy your theory. Another season as NAIA POTY is more marketable than 1/2 season of @ NCAA Champs. Pro scouts do not care where the players are; they will find the talent. Look at all the players on the USMNT without any collegiate experience whatsoever. If this was an oversight, then it was a big one. Somebody did not do their homework. Very UN-Porter! I guess that moves Chiu into starting 11.

If the team gels and hits their stride the second half of the season into the NCAA's I feel we will have a good tourney run (although we can not expect any Akron team to make it to the finals year after year). I saw some of the practice the other day and I dont know if Chiu will be a started, my vote is for Tommy or the other Jamaican (or we play with one forward and two attacking mids). bisbee
I think Matt Dagilis will get playing time as a center back. We need his size in there. If not, we are highly vulnerable to being attacked in the air. True... size matters... sometimes... as we saw with the WNT against Brazil and Japan... but Barson and Gallego are 5' 10"... Yedlin is 5' 8"... and Balogun is 5' 9"... and Mayer... ???... what happened to Mayer? The new roster shows numbers assigned to everyone now... and Mayer is MIA. Anyone have any info on Mayer??? Nope still not everyone. Bonilla, Portillos, Walls, the seventeen incoming goalkeepers, all still not on the roster. You can relax, I'm sure he's still on the team, they are probably just updating the roster a little at a time. Oh and I have to disagree with Dagillis or Balogun on the the backline. I still think it'll be Mayer-Barson-Gallego-Yedlin. We saw Balogun play as an outside back last year and he wasn't that great. If Yedlin is supposed to be better than Kofi then Balogun isn't starting above Yedlin or Mayer. Furthermore, Balo has never been a centerback and I don't expect him to play there either. I also don't know why Dagillis would start now if he hasn't started in the last two years. He wasn't better than Zarek and I don't expect him to be better than a kid who just finished playing three full games for the U-18 national team under which Porter wan an assistant coach. I think it's back to the bench for Matt and if Balogun is going to play it will be as a defensive midfielder. Even then, I'm not convinced he will be in the starting XI. Also though, even if mine or anyone else's predictions aren't correct on August 27th, that doesn't mean it will be the case for the whole season. I think it could be a few games before we have a concrete starting line-up. I think last year Porter tried starting a few guys at would would eventually be Darren's spot and Scotty's spot. It could take a few games to figure out which guys work together the best. Where does Arboleda fit in? Has maturity advantage but heard he is not fast. Anyone see him play? Overall, I am not that concerned that he has to sit. He will come in after 7 games and start to tear it up.

yazan07
Ok here is my adjusted line-up. Porter has alluded to an adjusted formation to best utilize our personnel. Also I have heard more than once that Holmes will be out for the first portion of the season so I have factored that in too. Mattocks Quinn - Caldwell - Schmitt* Balogun - Trapp Mayer - Barson - Gallego - Yedlin Meves *I think this is the spot that is most up for grabs. I would guarantee almost everyone else as starters, but I put Tommy here just because, and I think it could change. Maybe Barrett gets a chance to play here too. Also Holmes playing changes things and he probably starts. Whichever of the players I just mentioned that don't start are probably the first ones off the bench. I also expect Brenes and Stevenson to get good minutes, especially with their ability to play multiple roles. Again, I don't know what formation we will be using. I also have heard that we could possibly be using a 4-3-3. Either way, I expect most of the aforementioned players to start. Can't wait, only a few more days! GoZipsGoZips
ANYONE know for sure that Luke Holmes is suspended? Why? Noone knows for certain... no documented support of this on the Iternet... It was reported earlier that since he moved to Division I... he would have to serve a suspension due to his former status in the UK ( maybe as a semi-pro? )... and that this suspension did not factor in Division IA rules... but who knows? This could be the reason that Porter started Holmes on the Orange Team (2nd team) last weekend. But... it could also be that he started on the 2nd team to balance the teams more and give the 2d team some attacking capability. We'll see. I haven't read this thread in it's entirerty, so I'm just jumping in here (forgive me if this has been discussed) but the team will be jelling without Holmes, so there's a danger of him being kept out of the loop for the entire year, no? He'd have to be awfully good to sit out the first six games, and then just jump into a starting/contributing role against Columbus, right? I was writing my last reply while you were replying... not very quick sometimes. Means that he misses Tulsa... back for OSU...? By the time he rejoins the team... they should be jellin. Based on his prior production as a scorer I think he will be just fine.
fknbuflobo
He's suspended. 100%. Just trust me on this. OK... I trust that. From what I have seen, Holmes is extraordinary. He has talent worthy of post season accolades. However, a team full of new faces will absolutely need to coalesce a soon as possible to be successful, with or without any individual. If Holmes is suspended, he may not contribute in a major way in this his only season with us. This makes his transfer here all the more puzzling. It does not add up that this suspension was anticipated. Why would he do that? Something unexpected happened, making me ask questions. Who has the full story here? Tank?
