A timeline of the game: UAkron up 13-5 on Sheridan College. 12:30 to go in the 1st half. #akronmbb @ktg_knowthegame: @elitehoops_qc the Zips are in town? Wow? NCAA invading the north. I'm loving the fact Cdn schools are taking on the challenge. @ktg_knowthegame yessir! They're fun to watch. Chauncey Gilliam throws his 2nd -alley down HARD. Zips up 32-13 over Sheridan. #akronmbb 55-24 Akron up on Sheridan at the half. #akronmbb @eminister: @elitehoops_qc Thanks for the Akron updates. Do you have a second half score, updates? How's the Akron 7-foot center playing? @eminister 75-37. Zeke is playing well. Blocking shots and finishing. They have no answer for him. 112-54 Zips up with 55sec left. #akronmbb Akron wins game 1 of their CAN tour. 112-59 @voodoo612: @elitehoops_qc Can we get some sort of numbers? Top 4 scorers? @voodoo612 Gilliam, Harney, Justice were top scorers. Don't have exact #s guys sorry! But I'm sure they'll be on the site soon. Quote
Zipmeister Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Geeez, a blow out! Who would have guessed? Quote
Quickzips Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 GoZips.com write-up Sure looks like KD is more interested in the new guys, at least he was today. Gilliam, Harney, Egner, McClanahan, Justice and Ibitayo all in double digits scoring. Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 KD already knows what the vets can do under game conditions. Now's the time to see what the new guys can do, even if it's just an exhibition game against a way overmatched opponent. Quote
GoZips Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 Interesting starting lineup. I presume Harney started at the PF spot. I really doubt it was Nitro or Q. Not sure what this says about Egner and Tree, but I had always been under the impression that Harney was more of a SF. Egner has been being groomed to back up Zeke in the post. Thus, he was not likely to get a start (just yet) at the power forward. Using the four man core KD hinted at (Q, Alex, Bret, and Zeke) there needed to be a starting power forward. Nick Harney repeatedly showed his intensity and constantly improving skill set. Thus, he was the likely choice to start at PF. Looking at the points scored one can draw the conclusion that the reserves saw a ton of action. Primarily Chauncey Gilliam (dying to know how many offensive rebounds he snatched), got a chance to show case his shooting skills as did Blake Justice. I still want to see the stat sheet. A play by play would be even better. I am not sure if we can glean much from playing Carlton or any one else as KD is likely to rotate line ups and let the newbies get a lot of minutes. KD has stated several times that he is not really concerned about winning or losing. This is probably the truth. The Zips need to bond as a team. Tree needs to man up. I hope he got to play at least ten minutes as he needs the college level "banging" to toughen him up. He has great size and a teachable skill set. What he needs is "heart", grit, guts, attitude. You get the drift. How did Brian Walsh play? Who backed up Alex on the point? Did Bret operate from the wing with long range bombs or did he drive the lane? How many minutes did every one get? How many team blocks? dunks? steals? turnovers? rebounds? Have to believe that KD went easy on Sheridan. Quote
Dave in Green Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 Tree may be a work in progress, but #1 sure showed some sweet offensive moves in the highlight reel at the 0:44 and 1:08 marks. Remember the frustration we had with Bardo not going hard to the bucket and slamming it through? Fuhgeddaboudit! Tree, Harney, Gilliam and Egner all know what to do with the ball when they get it in close. Sure wish a box score would pop up somewhere. Quote
GoZips Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Degeh really interviews well. Impressive young man. Quote

Few things you notice real quick from that video: Zips have a lot of guys who can get off their feet. I counted at least 4 or 5 guys who dunked the ball from basically a standstill. Haven't seen that kind of ability from the Zips in a long time. Blake Justice has a very good looking shot. Very smooth, good release, good follow through. If the team needs another 3 point gunner this season I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him get minutes. I already knew this from last year, but I am really going to enjoy the next three years watching Alex Abreu. He may be little, and he may get himself into trouble from time to time out there, but he has an electric sense about him with the ball in his hands that is just a joy to watch. That behind the back spin move in the early portions of the video was just beautiful. Sheridan was entirely overmatched. Nowhere was that more evident than when one of their forwards grabbed a rebound only to have Egner easily rip the ball from his hands and finish an easy layup. Quote

While everyone would love to have a 6-9 PG like Magic Johnson, Joey Rodriguez, a 5-10 PG from Puerto Rico, took VCU to the Final Four a few months ago. You really don't have to be that tall to distribute the ball. The important thing is to have 4 other players on the floor who know what to do with the ball when it magically appears in their hands. The biggest challenge is at the defensive end, where a 5-10 PG has to be really clever to offset the offense of taller PGs. We know that Rico is pretty good at picking pockets and frustrating opposing PGs by quickly planting his feet where they want to be. I really believe if Rico dedicates himself to physical conditioning, he could lead the Zips to the promised land. Quote
akronzips71 Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 The Dunk by ZEKE is a sight for sore eyes. We have been looking for that for two years. If he can start dunking in games, we will hard to beat. Quote
