Akron at Michigan

Recommended Posts

Match starts at 7:00pm tomorrow night. How do you see this turning out? I see most likely a 1-1 or 2-2 draw tomorrow night. Gozips.com said that Kirkwood and Frawley, both freshmen, are starting tomorrow night. Which Kirkwood surprises me since we're so deep in experienced defenders. Pfau must of been impressed with her in the preseason training. Frawley doesn't surprise me since we lost a lot of midfielders last season. I think this will be the starting 11. We'll find out if it's true.

GK- Senior Jeny Wolbert

4 defenders- Senior Liz Cloutier, Senior Kara Cooper, Junior Kaitlin Flanagan, and Freshman Hailey Kirkwood

4 midfielders- Junior Ashley Hughes, Senior Jordan Clark, Sophomore Kelly DeNiro, and Freshman Alex Frawley

2 forwards- Senior Rachel Phillip and Junior Katie Wise

Wise, Phillip, Cooper, or Hughes may not be starting and may come off the bench. Gross, Kern, Schulte, Steckel, or Rusnak may get a starting spot by tomorrow. This team is so deep this year compared to last year.

Michigan was an NCAA Tournament team last year, so we should see how close we are to where we want to be. Heading to the intrasquad scrimmage tonight for the men's team. GO ZIPS!!!!!!

Not sure if you're aware of it, but Akron is unbeaten in season-openers since the program's inception in 2001, going 9-0-1. Under coach Chris Pfau Akron is 3-0 in season-openers, outscoring opponents by a total of 11-3. The Zips defeated Pittsburgh 6-2 in 2008, took down Wright State 2-1 in 2009, and defeated Illinois State 3-0 last year. We returned a lot of starters, and I feel really optimistic...Besides, didn't you remember the women's basketball season opener vs Michigan a few years ago? I know that that game was home, but still. I'll take the kid's line from "Angels in the Outfield" movie......

It can happen

Akron scores first on a corner kick by Kelly DeNiro to Kyarah Foushee with 5 mins to go in first half. Second half now underway with the Lady Zips beating the Wolverines in Ann Arbor 1-0...GO ZIPS!! I`m really high on the blue and gold kool-Aid

Just like GoZips have been stating with the men's basketball team on speaking the truth, I'm only trying to educate/tell the truth to the zips fanbase on a particular sport that they don't follow( which i mean by that is women's soccer, not soccer in general).

This team just beat the #31 team in the nation. I don't know about you, but that Michigan State home opener on September 4th looks a lot more sexier now... :thumb:

Does anyone want what I was having to drink now? I believe it's called the Blue and Gold Kool-Aid...

It just struck me that the subhead on this thread is just as accurate now as when the thread was first posted:

Women's soccer team just arrived in Ann Arbor now

I didn't do that on purpose, but it sure did work out well, didn't it? To be completely honest, I thought, going into Ann Arbor, #31 in nation, no way we're winning. But did I think we could tie them? Absolutely. I posted this as I found out they just got to their hotel in Ann Arbor, so I put that as the subhead.

STAT OF THE NIGHT: With tonight's season opening win, Akron Lady Zips are now 10-0-1 all time in season openers. Under Coach Pfau, Akron is 4-0-0 in season openers...

I was almost right on the starting lineup. Phillip and Wise did both start up front. However, Frawley did not start and neither did Cooper or Flanagan. Here's how it turned out!!!!

Goalkeeper: Senior Jeny Wolbert

Defenders: Senior Liz Cloutier, sophomore Gillian Gross, sophomore Amber Kern, freshman Hailey Kirkwood

Midfielders: Senior Jordan Clark, Junior Ashley Hughes, Sophomore Kelly DeNiro, and Sophomore Maggie Rusnak

Forwards: Senior Rachel Phillip and Senior Katie Wise

Players that came off the bench were Senior Kara Cooper, Junior Kaitlin Flanagan, Junior Kirsten Schulte, and Sophomore Kyarah Foushee (who scored that winning header)

from GoZips:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Kyarah Foushee scored her first career goal to lead The University of Akron women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over 2010 NCAA Tournament at-large selection Michigan at U-M Soccer Stadium Friday night.

Senior goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert made nine saves to record the shutout, while senior Rachel Phillip sent three shots on target in the match.

The victory extends Akron's unbeaten streak in season-openers to 11 games (10-0-1). The Zips have never lost a season-opener in the 11-year history of the program. It is also the first ever win by an Akron side over a Big Ten opponent.

Phillip nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when her header was knocked away by UM goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer.

Foushee scored the match's only goal in the 40th minute of play, heading home a corner kick by fellow sophomore Kelly DeNiro from just in front of the Michigan net.

"In the first part of the game we played good, attractive soccer against a good opponent which ultimately led to Kyarah's goal," said UA coach Chris Pfau.

Three first half saves by senior goal keeper Jeny Wolbert ensured that the Zips would hold the lead into the halftime break.

Akron would then keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard in the second half, with Wolbert stopping another six shots. The clean sheet by Wolbert was the 11th of her Akron career.

"When we got tired and lost our legs a bit in the second half, we really battled and defended very well which I was extremely proud of," said Pfau.

UA would come close to extending the lead on three different occasions in the second period. Phillip forced Haley Kopmeyer into saves in the 68th and 82nd minute, while Foushee nearly picked up the double in the 77th minute, forcing Kopmeyer into yet another save.

The Zips are back in action next Saturday (Aug. 27) when they travel to Miami, Fla. to take on Florida International.

here's quotes from Michigan's head coach:

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan

On scoring chances ... "We had four or five chances right in front of the goal, which we had in the second half. We had open players, and that's when you try to score. It comes down to our players having the composure to finish. I think it was two very different halves. We didn't play with a ton of urgency in the first half, but in the second half, we showed tremendous energy to try and score a goal and win a game. We certainly got that motivation, being down a goal."

On Christina Murillo ... "Christina was fantastic. Nobody knows she had food poisoning from dinner last night. She ran out of gas there at the end. I talked with her head coach and he said he thinks she's got a great shot at being on the Mexican Olympic roster next year. It's only half of what she's capable of."

On the lesson learned for Sunday's match vs. Oakland ... "I think its the lesson the girls learn every year. You cannot wait to put your foot on the pedal. You have to go after it. Akron did a very good job defending, and we got great chances, but could have had a lot more if it were 0-0 and Akron were coming forward to try and score. They had one forward and 10 people behind the ball. That's good coaching on their part. We righted the ship in the second half, but couldn't get any past their defense."

Do any of you remember the Women's basketball season opener at home vs Michigan a few years ago? Deja vu(except for location)??? The only difference(other than location), is the women's soccer team isn't trying to turn this into a winning program. They've already done that. Now they're taking it to that next level. The level that your goal each year is to make it to the NCAA tournament. Next level after that would be your goal is to make the College Cup each year...

We're getting there!!!!!!!!!!!!

GO ZIPS!!!!!!
