We'll have to keep the ball out of the air too since they have the clear height advantage. im looking for porter to re-establish the way we normally play via possession and accurate passing to minimize those advantages they may have over us. hopefully we'll also have luke back to compliment maddocks... we desperately need him. We're nowhere near as good as we are when he's out there.

True, Holmes did not not play especially well, but no one besidesTrapp brought their A game.
mes102
The biggest key for us with that height, is to make sure we don't give Northern Illinois many restarts. Especially on corner kicks...

No one played particularly well (save Trapp) but the team did better with Schmitt in the game than with Holmes. I have no ill will nor personal feelings about it, just my opinion on the game. And don't get me wrong, DeA had the worst game I've seen him play in a long time, so it's not like I'm blaming anything on Holmes.

On the bright side, young Mr. Trapp is really coming into his own.

Z.I.P.
I will be scoreboard watching this weekend hoping that Notre Dame and Virginia can take care of business Maryland @ Virginia is televised on Fox Prime Ticket on the West Coast today (4 PM PT/1 HST, so I can't watch ). It's strange how that network is suddenly broadcasting college games -- they had one last weekend also. It may be picked up by some other Fox regional nets. ZippyRulz
Game time tonight at 7:30, carried on mac-sports.com and 1350am. Would be a great tailgating double header opportunity on campus today but I think there's a rule that tailgating must end shortly after the football game(?) UAZipster0305
A good win and shutout against a solid Top-25 program that has some explosive offense. Nice to see Mattocks picking up the scoring recently and keeping him in the running for the Herman Trophy. The National Championship race is wide open this year. IMO, any program in the Top-15 has a respectable shot at the National Championship. I'm hoping the UCSB game is analogous to that of CSU from last year. I would love to see UCSB in Akron for the NCAA Tournament as a rematch in the cold.
tbozeglav
Quick, hastily made review of the game:Early on our passing seemed to be a bit rough. Saw some nice passing only to watch a pass go out of bounds because we didnt play it well. As some have mentioned, some of the first touches were rather hard and resulted in the ball bouncing further away from us than desired.Conversely, as the game wore on things normalized and I saw the akron possession-style play like we have come to expect. It was very refreshing and helped maximize the chances we had. To go along with the above point, I felt we executed very well with our possessions to neutralize the height and strength advantages NIU had over us. Even then, I saw our guys executing well-played headers on NIU. Very well done IMO. I felt we were much more patient with the game today in comparison to Wednesday. Granted on Wednesday UCSB was pressuring us non-stop to disrupt our play, I still felt NIU was attempting to do the same and we countered very well with clean, direct, and accurate passing. Meves... I had some doubts about him after Wednesday. Tonight, I feel much better about him. Even though our back line stepped their game up immensely and damn near prevented any of NIUs players from making any good shots at our goal, Meves made some damn good plays tonight. His save in the final 3 minutes of the game was about the best you could have asked and to see him get slammed into our net and get right back up (well, not RIGHT back up since he did get rung pretty good) was great to see of him.NIU played us rough... I am surprised there weren't any more cards... there were a few slide tackles by their guys that seemed questionable...thats all I got. I might be a bit wrong so feel free to let me know... just my thoughts on the game. Great win against a quality team. Just getting back into our stride... RANDOM THOUGHT: Props to NIU's coach for coming over to the Rowdies and shaking hands and being a good sport with us. I specifically recall him saying "Man, I havent heard anyone insulting me or my wife yet, what's going on here?!", which was hilarious. Glad to see there are coaches who appreciate what we do, even though it can be sometimes borderline... or over it haha. Unlike a coach from a certain school in cow town... I had the feeling throughout the match that the referee was quite biased in favor of NIU. He seemed to let a lot of their junk slide, often without a word to them. Conversely, he seemed to take every opportunity to get in Akron's face. PO'd me to watch #13 of NIU punch a Zip player in the head right in front of the linesman. Nothing was done, save the crowd getting on the linesman to no avail. Wondering why NIU received no punishment for taking down Meves in the net. He took a hard hit. Looked bad. Took him a while to shake the cob webs.

Have to think it may have a bit to do with Schmitt's outstanding play right now. He's been pretty impressive lately. Holmes played a perfect through ball to Mattocks and as a reward they pulled him. A bit of a head scratcher there.

Doesn't hurt to test the rules. Private parking lot adjacent to Odd Corner parking lot is the place to be. There is always a ball kicking around, given room. Manny’s Pub is close by (restrooms), so we are always ready, come rain or shine. Edit: I take my children to one or two games each season. This IS NOT the preferred parking lot for those occasions.
