bobbyake Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 USA Today gives you their complete rankings and it's not looking good for the Zips http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt11.htm The Zips are ranked 182 which is well below a lot of FCS teams. I believe there are a total of 256 teams in Division 1 football so Akron is ranked above 74 teams. The Zips are ranked below 71% of the teams in Division 1 football. Go Zips!! Youngstown State is ranked 166 which makes me surprised a certain troll hasn't been around. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 According to that, we will be 19 1/2 point underdogs at home against Ohio. Quote
ZippyRulz Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 Nothing surprising there but the optimist in me says we still have more upside potential than about 100 of the teams above us currently. Quote
UAZipster0305 Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 And the only team we've beaten this year is ranked #240...only 246 teams are listed in the rankings...and we didn't exactly blow VMI out. Quote
zipdiehard Posted October 9, 2011 Report Posted October 9, 2011 These are always fun to look at, but not worth much. Central Florida is ranked 21 spots ahead of FIU even though FIU beat them, has the same overall record and a tougher schedule (per their own ratings). Plus, Can't is awful this year but is 50 spots ahead of us. I guess their tougher schedule pushed them up. They should be in the 180's just like us, as they are narrowly the 2nd worst team in the MAC. Can't wait for these two pathetic offenses to meet. Quote
Big Zip Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Actually I think there are only 120 Div. 1 teams. Quote
zipinnc Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Nothing surprising there but the optimist in me says we still have more upside potential than about 100 of the teams above us currently. Potential is meaningless word. I'm reminded of a quote from my high school coach "You guys have lots of potential, you know what that means? It means you haven't done a d@mn thing yet!!" Now, I'm not saying that I don't see any difference (positive) in the FOUNDATION or effort, but I do see a difference(negative) in results. But the potential isn't going to get us wins. I think icoach's biggest miss might be not selling his program to alum who support the university and more specifically the program. It stinks of someone wanting to say "I told you so." Quote

bobbyake Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 Actually I think there are only 120 Div. 1 teams. FCS is D1 as well Quote
Big Zip Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Why would we count FCS? Are you saying we should compare ourself to a lower Division? My expectation do not having anything to do with comparing ourselves to FCS schools we don't play in the FCS division Quote
ZachTheZip Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Through the first six weeks of the season, the Sagarin ratings are weighted by including pre-season rankings into the calculation, in order to give it some differentiation early on. After next week, the pre-season weight is removed from the formula and the ratings reflect only the actual games played this season. So check it a week from today and see where we stand. Quote
you am i Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Actually I think there are only 120 Div. 1 teams. There are 126 football teams in what used to be called Division I, including Akron. The other teams on the list are in what used to be called Division I AA, which includes VMI and Gardner-Webb. Quote
ZippyRulz Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Actually I think there are only 120 Div. 1 teams. There are 126 football teams in what used to be called Division I, including Akron. No, Division I has always included both tiers...everyone that's not Div. II or Div. III. And it's still Div. I. Quote
Big Zip Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 You can call it a banana split but they consindered two separate divisions. I do not consider them the same. Quote
ksu sucks Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 You can call it a banana split but they consindered two separate divisions. I do not consider them the same. Right, but if you were to sit down and watch Akron play a football game, would you be able to decisively say which division we were in? Quote
Big Zip Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Of course not, but I don't have to because I know they are part of the big boy division not the little division 1. Quote
bobbyake Posted October 23, 2011 Author Report Posted October 23, 2011 Good News: Akron has not dropped in the rankings and we're still #182. Bad News: Youngstown State is ranked #135 and Kant State is ranked #164 Quote
eguins Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 YSU: 96 Can't STATE: 126 AKRON: 196 That certain troll says HELLO! This is the way it used to be in the 90s! ;) Quote
GP1 Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 My expectation do not having anything to do with comparing ourselves to FCS schools we don't play in the FCS division We may not play in that division, but we have played two teams from that division in the past two seasons and we are 1-1 against them. Now, are we D-1A or I-AA? I know what I think. Quote
Blue & Gold Posted November 19, 2011 Report Posted November 19, 2011 My expectation do not having anything to do with comparing ourselves to FCS schools we don't play in the FCS division We may not play in that division, but we have played two teams from that division in the past two seasons and we are 1-1 against them. Now, are we D-1A or I-AA? I know what I think. And VMI, the mighty D-1AA squad we beat, is 1-9 on the year. Interesting, this week's D-1AA pillow fight (aren't they all?) is VMI (1-9) vs. Gardner-Webb (4-6). Oh, wait. Gardner-Webb beat us in our house last year. Quote
