ZachTheZip
Looks like Akron will play WMU on Friday, and the winner of the NIU-Buffalo match on Sunday.Hartwick, BGSU, and FAU all miss the tournament, although they are all much improved over last season. Here's the MAC standings:Akron 13-3-3 (6-0-0)Northern Illinois 12-5-0 (4-2-0)Buffalo 8-7-2 (3-2-1)Western Michigan 6-11-2 (2-2-2)Hartwick 5-6-5 (1-2-3)Bowling Green 7-8-3 (1-4-1)Florida Atlantic 5-8-2 (0-5-1)Now here's the RPI as of 10-31-11 (Bold teams made the MAC tournament):10 Akron16 Northern Illinois103 Hartwick126 Bowling Green132 Buffalo141 Florida Atlantic180 Western MichiganI think this shows the need for an 8th MAC soccer team. 8 teams allows you to hold a full 8-team tournament with everyone participating. WMU got lucky with a .500 conference record even though they're the worst team in the MAC. I don't think it's right that Hartwick and BG have to sit out while WMU gets in. Ando
I don't like the idea of everyone participating because it takes away from the significance of the regular season - placing emphasis on knockout tournaments is a very American phenomenon to begin withRPI is a little arbitrary to use as a deciding factor in determining which teams are better too, but it seems fair to say that WMU isn't the 4th best team

And if we could get an 8th team in the MAC, I would obviously want the team to be a NCAA tournament contender to boast the conference
ZachTheZip
The reason I mention this is that top-15 West Virginia is looking for a new home. It would be a huge boost for the conference as a whole.

ZachTheZip
Louisville isn't switching to a conference that doesn't sponsor men's Soccer.

bisbee
We better be really careful not to blow it next weekend. The guy on Big Soccer who keeps track of the RPI currently has us at #16. NIU has RPI of 24. That game is a MUST WIN.

Maybe they figure people could go to the soccer game before heading to watch some high school football playoffs? Other than getting out of work in time to make it to the game. What time is the game Sunday?

Doug Snyder
odd that Zips would not be playing in the second game don't you think? It always seemed to me that the highest seed should play the first game. They get an additional 3 hours of rest and can watch game two without a later game on their mind. Did the Zips get to choose?? ZachTheZip
It's supposed to be pretty cold Friday. Perhaps we wanted to play before the temperature gets below freezing?
ZachTheZip
It's gameday. Best scenario today is that both Akron and NIU win outright (not decided by PKs).

We are in big trouble if we dont totally dominate western Michigan. NIU also needs to win to help our RPI when we win the championship tomorrow
zips4ever2008
Zips lost on penalty kicks 4-3. We have to hope for an at large bid to the NCAA tournament now. Even if the Zips do get an invite, I don't see the team going past the first round. They are not playing good soccer right now.

I think we are OK for an at large bid as we would need to drop over 20 pts in the RPI. The offense has totally disappeared over the past 4 games. Can't put it all on Mattocks but he has only one goal in past 4 games against marginal opponents. Will be interesting to see the brackets which are released on Nov 14.
