Columbus Crew Highlighting Zips in their Academy

Recommended Posts

The Crew do not have a single Zip on their roster, but at least they give us recognition here and there.

I wonder if they did this because, when they called me about a week ago asking me to buy tickets next season, I explained that I only go to Crew games to see former Akron players who play on other MLS teams. I told them if they ever pick up some of their academy players who play for the Zips (I mentioned a few names), I would be more interested. :D (Hmmmm, what a coincidence.)

I would love for them to bring in some former Zips / Crew academy players, but to be honest even last season the Crew posted articles about the Akron Zips. They've always been supportive about the Akron Zips. Crew will be hurting next season for ticket sales unless they make some changes, an Akron Zip would help.

But Akron didn't do so hot either:

If you throw the Zips attendance into the equation, Akron is definitely a market to lean on.

It's not a matter of supporting Akron or any other collegiate soccer program. The Crew website has always done stories on former academy players succeeding after they leave the ugly yellow and black. That will probably be the case for a long time -- meaning they will not change their scouting or draft strategy to intentionally draft former academy players. For that matter, how many MLS players today dress for clubs for whom they played at the academy level? Very few I bet.

BTW -- the MLS attendance figures are another exercise in exaggeration. Only the top maybe four or five clubs actually draw close to the announced figures. Just take a look at the stands during TV matches. The Crew Stadium is rarely half full.

attendance for MLS games is usually very accurate. If you look at each game on an individual basis, you'll notice big variances for some clubs as they run promotions. Take New England for example, their past few games had decent crowds.
