Akron Summit Assault Leaving Akron? Being Sold?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure, but I received an anonymous email today asking for info on Akron Summit Assault. I'm pretty sure Akron Rowdy/savetheforce and the email I received are all the same person. Someone is trying to find out info. He/She is the only one to hear a rumor supposedly. Claimed to be starting a website on Akron/Canton area soccer too. I have yet to get a response where its located.

$6,000 is the annual PDL fee. Having a PDL team is good for Akron players in the off season. They could easily get 300-500 people per game if they did things right. How many of the 1,500 UAkron season ticket holders know the team exists? Why not pass out flyers during Akron soccer games? Put flyers in car windshields while there are 4,000 people at an UAkron soccer game.

The Cleveland Internationals averaged 90 per game? The 186 from relocating to Akron, with poor local awareness is not bad. 250 or more per game should be an easy goal for 2012. But if they did things right, they could draw 400 or more per game.

The University of Akron averaged 3,543 per game this year for the regular season.

The Akron Summit Assault was only able to get 5% of what an UAkron game brings in. A PDL team in this city should easily get at least 300 to 400 per game.

I'm amazed they're not working more with the University. I'd rather watch them at FE/CC than go to St. V's. Plus, no one knows they exist. Work with UA and you instantly got 3k+ soccer fans that know about the team. Could easily average 500 or more playing at FE/CC.

Send a letter to the Akron Summit Assault. Keep soccer in Akron!

I believe with the proper marketing the club could be successful. I don't believe 5% of Akron Zips Soccer followers were even aware of the PDL club. I understand it might not be seen as a valuable asset to the club. With some more backing from the community, sponsors, businesses it could be successful and a fantastic competitive advantage. Some of our Akron Zips can stay close to home, play with the club, and be involved with the soccer community as they did last season(Dagilis, Quinn, Balogun, Schmitt, & Caldwell). I would hate to see the club only be given a one-year chance to succeed. If the team leaves now, another might not be back in the near future.

Crew8...if you've made contact with the Summit Assault people, send me their email at mike@akronsportsnow.com

I know I don't have the funds to throw at them but I could at least work something out in terms of advertising for them for free on my site. As well as continuing to give them some coverage of course.

It's all in the marketing. Looking at the Wooster Oilers and Lake Erie Crushers, it doesn't take a lot to sell this level of competition even in a "bad" market and economy. Even the Lorain County Ironmen drew better.

We've seen soccer on every level do well here. If you can't sell soccer in this region, there's something wrong.

Also, the WPL is on the brink of going under...again.

University of Akron men's team averaged 3,543 during the regular season. The Lady Zips averaged 467.

The PDL averaging only 186 is a sign that they did a poor job spreading the word about their program.

Lets help the WPS and add a club in Akron. Then make a deal for Alex Morgan :D

I would definitely get behind that! (pun not originally intended, but then I realized it was a pun so I'm not sure if it's intended or not)

I'm amazed that Dayton can sustain a USL Pro team when they only average 661 per game.

Is a NPSL team in Akron more feasible? They play 6 home games vs the PDL's 8, but costs a lot less to maintain. Could a rivalry between Akron and Cleveland draw a crowd?

I'd hate to see Akron lose soccer in the summer because Akron Metro did a lousy job (no excuse for averaging 186 per game in Akron) with the PDL team and only gave this city 1 year.

The NPSL would be more feasible, although I don't know if the NPSL would permit two clubs so close.

The Dayton Dutch Lions owners have money, and lots of it and is supported by Netherlands top division FC Twente. They also have a club in Houston, Texas Dutch Lions.
