hiroad1
Most newly hired head coaches seem to hire people they have worked with previously. Can any of you advodating for Paul Winters speculate on who he might hire, at least as OC and DC? Would he be bringing his current staff? johnnyzip84
ITZ mentioned this before, but a good possibility for DC is current Wayne St DC John Hauser. He has a MAC bloodline, coming from NIU. With Paul having an offensive background, one would think he leans on Hauser heavily for defensive tactics and gameplanning. Current Wayne St recruiting coordinator and DL coach Scott Kazmierski seems to come up in stories about recruiting some of the better known players for Wayne St. I could see him coming along too. Wayne St RB coach and former YSU star Trent Boykin could also find his way back to Akron. He was a grad assistant here in 1996-97. It's hard to argue with TWO, one-thousand yard rushers in a season (Davis and Renel). And while this next guy will surely make the Owens haters cringe, I'm firmly in the camp that believes the offense in those days was perfectly fine. Did they get a little conservative at times when you wished they hadn't? Sure. But all in all they performed admirably, especially against quality competition. So without further adieu I give you Tom Stacy, current RB coach at Ashland and previous QB coach at Akron when Winters was OC. While I'm against bringing too many of the old LO gang back, I don't think it would be bad to selectively add someone like Tom.

If he is the quality of staff member Winters brings, I will gladly pass.

Don't pin MY LAME A$$ attempt to research said staff on Winters. Why don't you wait to see if he's hired and assembles his own to do that. And by "barely above the high school" level, I assume you mean D-II. Now, not only are head coaches at D-II worthless pieces of $hiT but so are any and all the assistants who work at that level. If that's your opinion, so be it. It's definitely not mine. Go Zips!

I am simply stating that he has only coached high school ball and position coaching jobs at the D2 level until recently.
InTheZone
It's pretty common practice, especially in the South, to hire high school coaches directly to 1A position coaching jobs. Good coaches are found at all levels, and if Winters has recognized a talented coach, he would be stupid not to include them on his staff just because they are young and don't have the same background as maybe some guy who has been coaching for 20 years and failed over and over and over again. johnnyzip84
lol.. easy there. I am simply stating that he has only coached high school ball and position coaching jobs at the D2 level until recently. I'm OK now. I took an extra zoloft Keep in mind, I wasn't calling for Kazmierski to be a coordinator. And it looks like he's been Wayne State's DL coach and recruiting coordinator for more than a couple years. Scott Kazmierski concluded his seventh year on the Wayne State football coaching staff in November 2010 and sixth as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. He joined the Warrior football program in the spring of 2004 as running backs coach and moved to his current position in June 2005. I understand that if you don't want Winters, you're probably not going to like a staff he'll assemble either. We'll see. Maybe he'll surprise all of us with his staff if he gets the chance to assemble one here.

Not at all. I know a lot of guys that played for Winters and they all absolutely loved the guy. I just want to make sure we are making the best hire. Kind of the think with your head, not with your heart kind of example. I am playing devils advocate in a lot of my responses. If he is the guy we hire I will fully support him and his staff to the fullest.

Actually...I would like to see him hire a local HS coach. Thom Daniels. He has experience and contacts in Stark County and the Youngstown area. He no longer wants to be HC but is a great teacher and has a great football mind. Don't know if he would be interested...but I think he would be a good position coach or organization guy. Just my opinion.

Big Zip
As Urban Meyer is putting together his staff in Columbus is it possible some of the assistant coaches find their way to Winters staff? Does a guy like John Petereson who coached with Paul Winters come here to work as an O-Line coach/Assistant Head Coach? Does a guy like Vrabel come here (he is from Stow) to coach some aspect of the Defensive? Does Tressel's brother find his way to Akron to be an assistant coach of some kind. I think a staff of former assistants at a higher leve who are new, have local ties/MAC history...combined with some guys stepping up from lower divisions coudl make a nice mix. Good questions, but I don't see any of them coming to Akron. Some say Vrabel wasn't much of a coach. John P. could be at another BCS level school if he wanted. Dick Tressel will be moving to Nevada to run a casino.
