George Thomas, ABJ

I took a look at this string from awhile back and wanted to revive it so others might be able to offer a differing opinion after 5 months.

George's coverage of the Zips has been what I've always wanted from the Beacon Journal. I would like to thank the ABJ and GT for their work and I'm going to look forward to it as we move through the rest of the year. Articles like the one posted today on Dylan Brumbaugh are the articles that allow a fan base and community to get to know players and develop a deeper connection to the team. They are the type of articles you should get in a city covering a school of Akron's size. I look forward to reading GT and I'm a little disappointed when he doesn't write anything. I'm not sure I ever thought I would say that about the ABJ.

Thanks again George and keep up the good work!

Terry Bowden brings a lot of excitement into this area, the credit goes to him. The Beacon Journal is just doing its job trying to feed off that excitement.

I'm not trying to be a negative nancy here, but George Thomas and the Beacon's poor history with the Zips is hard to forget.

Thank you Terry Bowden for getting the Beacon on the Zips bandwagon.

You don't have to try to be a negative nancy....you simply are being a negative nancy in this case.

After the Zips won the MAC Championship the coverage was never this thorough or well done. To give credit to Bowden is patently dishonest. The ABJ didn't have to cover this program and didn't have to change the way they covered this program they did they deserver credit.

Consider that Hilltopper told us his contact at the ABJ told him that they've been planning for quite awhile to refocus their resources more on local stories -- including sports -- than on state, national and world stories.

Also, GT was assigned his new beat by the ABJ before Coach Bowden agreed to come to UA. The quality of GT's writing wouldn't be any different if there were a different head football coach. But it's also true that Coach Bowden is one of the most newsworthy and quotable coaches UA could have hired.

So, by good circumstance we have an outstanding sports writer covering a UA football program run by an outstanding football coach at a time when the local newspaper is focusing more on local stories.

What a great combination!

I'll admit that I was beyond skeptical and disappointed when George Thomas was named Zips beat writer. And I'm sure I probably said as much somewhere in that thread. I'm not going to look.

But I am now beyond happy to say that George has beyond a shadow of a doubt proven me wrong.

His coverage has been simply outstanding!

Yes they did, have you seen their subscriber numbers? They are dying. If they didn't start changing things soon, they would have been in big trouble. No one wants to read Buckeyes and Cleveland pro sports articles from a second-hand source.

Also, they are a little late on covering the Zips and while the coverage is nice, it's hard to forget the slants of years past after just a few months of decent coverage.
