Z.I.P.
I liked Luke's style of play and am hopeful he gets picked. Luke did not get good reviews from the combine, and is at best likely a late 2nd rounder. I guess the fact that he made himself available for the draft indicates he doesn't intend to go back to England to play. Mattocks will join Nannie in Vancouver. Crew8
Luke Holmes will have to wait for an invite to a club/preseason. He was not picked in the MLS Supplemental Draft today.
Jalapeño Zippy
Wow, I am surprised. On several occasions most notably OSU he was the difference in the game. Whoever signs him will be getting a steal if you ask me. What's keeping teams away? Consistency issues?
bobbyake
I'm dissatisfied with the Columbus Crew organization right now. There are 14.5 (Ben Speas counts as 1/2) former Akron players in the MLS and the Columbus Crew only have Ben Speas who will be recognized as a UNC product. Luke Holmes is a better player than the following: 1 Kirk Urso (UNC) Position: MF 2 Jamie Finch (University of Washington) Position: D 3 Darren Amoo (Liberty University) Position: F 4 Andrew Bulls (Univ. Maryland Baltimore Co.) Position: F frustrated with Columbus because I want to like them, but considering their lack of Akron players, Montreal Impact will be my #1 team next year followed by DC United

He'll get an invite from some club, if not MLS, USL if he wants to choose that route.

bobbyake
Rules regarding international players: Domestic/International: In 2011, a total of 144 international slots are divided among the 18 clubs. Each club began with eight international slots, which are tradable. There is no limit on the number of international slots on each club’s roster. The remaining roster slots must belong to domestic players. For clubs based in the United States, a domestic player is either a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident (green card holder) or the holder of other special status (e.g., refugee or asylum status). The two MLS clubs based in Canada – Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC – began with eight international slots, but their domestic slots may be filled with either Canadian or U.S. domestic players. MLS clubs based in Canada are required to have a minimum of three Canadian domestic players on their rosters. Players with the legal right to work in Canada are considered Canadian domestic players (i.e., Canadian citizen, permanent resident, part of a protected class). http://www.mlssoccer.com/2011-mls-roster-rules

It's not Columbus's fault Luke Holmes didn't get picked up. It is frustrating though that Columbus doesn't have any Akron players (besides the one that will be recognized from UNC). I try to watch all of Columbus' games on matchday live, but will switch if a team is playing with Akron players on it. I always root for the Akron players to do well which makes it hard to root for Columbus when they're up against a team with Akron players on it. Columbus doesn't feel like a home team, which I wish wasn't true.

Choosing not to pull for the Crew for the above reason is absurd. First of all, Speas is a STUD (Happy 21st to him today BTW), and two, they're the hometown team. Trust me. I'm sure the people who make the decisions to draft and invite players to join their club have a wealth of knowledge at their disposal. Trust in their decisions, and GO CREW! The Crew's colors don't go over too well with a lot of fans in Ohio, either. I attend matches at Crew Stadium for the sole purpose of supporting our former Zips. I've always cheered against the Crew in the past since they had no players with connections to Akron. With Ben on the team, that changes somewhat. I will still continue my support of the professional, former Akron players. My support depends upon who is on the pitch.
fknbuflobo
Columbus is NOT my hometown. I hold no allegiance to Columbus whatsoever! The Crew happen to be the closest MLS franshise to NEO. What of it? Now, things would be different had they actually brought a franchise to Hudson/Boston Heights (whatever) as once proposed. I would consider THAT my hometown team. But not Columbus. We all know who rules Columbus, and it is not The Crew.

Although I agree with much of your sentiment, if I don't support the Crew, then I don't have close access to our professional Zips Soccer players. Also, the Crew Academy has provided us Chad Barson, Thomas Schmitt, Eric Stevenson, Will Trapp, and Ben Speas. (I apologize if I left anyone out.) EDIT: To keep this on topic, I hope Luke gets an invite to try out for an MLS club. I wish the Crew would give him a chance.
fknbuflobo
I am no MLS scout; I just play one on ZNO. But I sure wish The Crew would give Holmes a tryout. I think he can succeed in the right setting. IMO, Holmes is a player very similar to Ampaipitakwong. Holmes is a better finisher while Ampai is a better passer. Neither is athletically superior. bobbyake
Luke Holmes seemed bummed about this on his twitter account. I feel bad for him because he has the skill to play in the MLS. I honestly think the only reason he wasn't picked up is because he'd take up an international spot. Those international spots can be traded, so they technically have a $$ value. Besides paying the 32,600 to Luke Holmes, they would lose the value of that international spot. Columbus' lack of Akron players is frustrating to me because I believe it would be good for soccer's growth in Ohio if the communities were connected. I've heard it mentioned before that Cleveland soccer fans don't like to come down to Akron for soccer. It seems like there's a rivalry between the communities of Ohio and it's not positive at all. The Crew's attendance was awful last year and it wont get better if they don't lean on other communities in Ohio for support.
Crew8
I'm not going to say much on the topic of the Crew, but I do know plenty of people who purchase season tickets and travel to Crew matches from Toledo, Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh. It stretches outside the state. Those are the hardcore soccer fans. The attendance problem probably relies more heavily on the people within the Columbus area than those outside the city. Although you need both to contribute in some sort of way. I have no relation to Columbus either besides the many new soccer friends I've met at Crew Stadium over the years either in the stands, Nordecke, or in the parking lot tailgating. Ever since my first visit to Crew stadium back in either '01 or '02. I remember watching the supporters section from across the stadium and telling myself, "I want to be there". I remember when Brian McBride, Frankie Hejduk, Cunningham's first stint with Columbus. Some good times. I've made many trips to Crew Stadium carpooling with new friends I met from Cleveland and Youngstown or Crew fans here in Akron. I'd love to have an MLS club or even an USL Pro or NASL club in the NE Ohio area, but until that day, I'll follow the Crew as my MLS Club, wishing the best to former Akron players. EDIT: I just came across this piece tonight and thought it was worth sharing a good read. Soccer's Heavy Boredom
