Akron Women's Soccer

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd start a thread for Women's soccer. I know it might not be as popular as the Men's team, but they deserve some recognition too.

Akron's Amber Kern selected as a Preseason All-MAC team by College Sports Madness

Does anyone know if Friday's first regular season women's match is free since the Men's team is playing an exhibition afterwards against Wright St.?

They are charging admission for the Men's game, so I would assume the Women's game is going to be charged as well. In the past, they have honored the Men's ticket for Women's games of doubleheaders.

A ticket will be required for the women's game as well. Ticket office will have people working each gate of the women's game.

Thanks! for some reason I was thinking the Men's exhibition matches were free. Now that you've said that I remember it was part of the season ticket package in the past. I still need to renew for this season yet.

So... not a Zips Ladies soccer follower... for sure... but I have a question for someone who is...

Croft is listed as: "Interim Head Coach: Vernon Croft (first season)"

Does that mean that we will soon promote the Demigod Keri Sarver to coach soon?

Has anyone ever looked at her history... All-Time Maryland... All ACC... NSCAA Awards and accreditations... etc?

Not sure, but to be honest, I would like for Croft after this season to just get named the head coach instead of one year as interim...they couldn't really do a search for a new coach when Pfau left, and to be honest, Croft has done a great job of at least changing a little of what the women's soccer team hasn't had the past few years...

Then we should keep him.

The women's soccer team looked really good this spring. They were putting all the pieces together, building the attack from the back and playing nice soccer - with possession. What was missing, in my opinion, is 1 or 2 impact players. We needed help up front for sure. We would dominate thru the backs and midfield (for the most part) but were lacking that dynamic up front. We had to rely on the last minute dump and run because we just didn't have what we needed up front. Too bad Green had to miss last season with an injury, I thought she would be key for us up front. Again - just my opinion. This program was in bad shape a few years ago (I think people forget that) and I am pleased that over the last few years you can see it has changed - dramatically. It's not an overnight process and I can really see the progression of the team each year. Recruiting has gone well - we have filled our needs and then some. We are drawing players that are used to playing soccer with a purpose at a higher level. We have gained skill and depth. This team should have a great season with the players that they have and the style of play that has been cultivated over the last few years.

Coach Croft stepped into a good position here - a solid core of players, a talented incoming class and recruits waiting in the wings for the next few years. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to the new coach, personality, etc. From what I have seen - his playing style is similar to the previous staff which is great since they have developed into that style/mentality over the last few years and now have the players to do so consistently.

That being said, I think the future is bright for the women's soccer program!

Ball State is coming to play my Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Warriors this coming weekend on O'ahu. Looks from appearances that they are similar to Akron, being unable to quite get over the hump and compete for a MAC title, but I think they've beaten Akron at least last two games. Anyone have any comments on the Lady Cards? I see their leading scorer last year was a fullback, now senior from Cincinnati #12, Brigit Reder, West Chester Lakota HS.

If you read through those tweets, Coach Croft mentions that they want to set the MAC attendance record for women's soccer against Northern Illinois on Friday, September 28th at 7:30pm. The MAC attendance record for women's soccer is 2,539. Coach Croft wants to have 2,600 for the night!

I'm always upset with the MAC on how they have women's soccer on the two days that people are preoccupied with the other football. Fridays for high school football, and sundays for professional football.

That's why I always feel women's soccer never gets close to the crowds the men's soccer team gets(putting the nation's best program off to the side for now)...

The Zips men's team have done well on Fridays. I need to find time to work on the attendance tables for this year, I'll add the day-of-the-week the games were played so we have actual data to look at.

Our support for the Women's team on here has been lacking. The ladies take on Cleveland State today @ Cleveland. We should consider setting up a stream for the game at the Barley House before the US game kicks off. http://www.horizonleague.org/live/6365

Bring a laptop if you like. I'll be there early, but yes the important World Cup Qualifying USA match against Jamaica will be on in the back party room of the Barley House. We had to move from our normal home bar with this match on BeIN, which is not carried by Time Warner or AT&T U-verse. Or having satellite interference with a weak channel signal, which caused our move for this match.

A lot of people want to see Akron men's soccer program over their high school football game. But if choice is high school football or women's soccer, then there's not much competition there. It's sad, because just once, I want to see what the women's soccer team would do with a crowd like a men's soccer match. I feel they would thrive in it...

It'll never happen....probably not even if they were national title contenders.

People just don't come out for women's sports (other than a half dozen basketball schools, that still draw far less than the men at the same school)
