bobbyake
It'll never happen....probably not even if they were national title contenders. People just don't come out for women's sports (other than a half dozen basketball schools, that still draw far less than the men at the same school) This is false, there are women soccer teams that average crowds over 1,000 in college. BYU played Texas in front of 4,922 last night. The WPS league had decent crowds Saying "it'll never happen" makes me think you should read Og Mandino's The Greatest Salesman in the World. A national contender will bring the crowds.

I can tell you from my own experience living in Portland in the late 90s to 2002 that the Pilot women's team is one of the big reasons why PDX is called Soccer City USA. Their (IIRC) two-time national champion team has consistently drawn 2000-4000 at Merlo Field on the North End of town for over 20 years. Alumni of UP include Canadian national star Christine Sinclair, and USWNT players Megan Rapinoe, Tiffany Milbrett and Shannon McMillan. Their late legendary coach, Clive Charles did for Portland what Caleb has accomplished in Rubber City. Well...so far. Interesting coincidence, hmmmmm. BTW -- that Dayton-BU game was an NSCAA/FSC national TV game. Our chance comes up on Friday. How many can we cram into the ElJay?

How many can we cram into the ElJay? if fans can create a unique atmosphere for games, it becomes contagious and something people want to experience regardless of W's or L's. A sporting event is a type of entertainment. The trick is to not make the entertainment come from the result on the field, but from the experience from going to the game. The W's helps market the product, but the experience keeps them coming back.

soccerbirdie16
The women's soccer team looked really good this spring. They were putting all the pieces together, building the attack from the back and playing nice soccer - with possession. What was missing, in my opinion, is 1 or 2 impact players. We needed help up front for sure. We would dominate thru the backs and midfield (for the most part) but were lacking that dynamic up front. We had to rely on the last minute dump and run because we just didn't have what we needed up front. Too bad Green had to miss last season with an injury, I thought she would be key for us up front. Again - just my opinion. This program was in bad shape a few years ago (I think people forget that) and I am pleased that over the last few years you can see it has changed - dramatically. It's not an overnight process and I can really see the progression of the team each year. Recruiting has gone well - we have filled our needs and then some. We are drawing players that are used to playing soccer with a purpose at a higher level. We have gained skill and depth. This team should have a great season with the players that they have and the style of play that has been cultivated over the last few years. Coach Croft stepped into a good position here - a solid core of players, a talented incoming class and recruits waiting in the wings for the next few years. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to the new coach, personality, etc. From what I have seen - his playing style is similar to the previous staff which is great since they have developed into that style/mentality over the last few years and now have the players to do so consistently. That being said, I think the future is bright for the women's soccer program! Well, not too sure what to say right about now. I really believed that the team would excel this year. I have been on the road a lot and haven't been able to see many games other than game tracker. Would be interested to hear from someone who has been following the team as to what has been going on. Thoughts? Insights? Thanks in advance!!

fknbuflobo
Jackson High school coach? I'd like to see Shaun Docking coaching either the men's or women's team. Docking is definitely personality for men's. As a player, Docking was even more intense than Porter. Wow! Not sure if Docking is an intense coach like Porter, though I imagine he is. mes102
I thought they would be better with this with Croft. I like him, and I think it's a tough spot for him as he just got here in the spring, as one of Pfau's assistants became head coach at Corpus & Christi, and then Pfau left....so Croft is a head coach of a team that he didn't even know 250 days ago, and a coaching staff he had to put together... I thought this might of been better for the program, since it might be a refresher for the program, but Croft has decided to get a lot of younger players playing time and starting time instead of the veteran players, which is hurting us in results. Might be better for the program's future, but not the program's present. Still have conflicting thoughts about Croft...
ZachTheZip
You can't really judge them on this season. Next season we'll know more. Lots of close losses. Prior to today's win over BG, they had six straight losses, all by a single point. They play strong most of the game and then give up a goal late to lose. That might be a conditioning problem. Which that was a consistent problem with Pfau's teams...Croft haven't really had time to implement all his stuff in(especially in the preseason stuff)
CincyZip
I feel awful for the girls. Loosing seven straight matches by one point has to be devastating. However, even with the early failure the team is not out of the chase for the MAC Tournament yet. If they can pull out the next three games they would be all but in. If they pull off two of the three, they would need help, but they could still make it.
Crew8
Congrats to the ladies finishing off the season with a win! 2-1 over Buffalo in Overtime. Good to see after they had some tough matches losing 3 out of the past 5 in overtime before today.
