UADavid
Hey, you can look at it any way you want to. It's not alumni bashing...I just got done praising them for all they give to the Zips...I just asked for more. Hey, if you're happy with the JAR getting noisy for 1 or 2 games a year, that's fine. But if you want more, if you want us to become a top mid-major, everyone's going to have to step it up. You can take offense all you want...maybe too much truth coming out? Hey, at least this discussion has brought some life to ya...and it's not even the Can't game! That's just it, you don't have the right to tell anyone to do more. You are suffering from delusions of grandeur. The truth is you're a loud mouth who has been a zip fan for what, one or two years? Keep on rooting for the team, just don't tell anyone what they have to do because it doesn't meet your standards! As for me, you have nothing on me. I've been cheering for the Zips since I was an undergraduate. Actions speak louder than words. And the ak-oldies you don't respect, show it with every sporting event they attend. Captain Kangaroo
Side note: has anyone been to a major conference basketball game. if so when. i been to a duke v. unc and game a duke v. maryland game. along with 2 other games the people there are absolutly nuts this is how the rowdies could eventually be if we start moving the oldies out of the lower sections. The Rowdies ain't Duke. They've shown up for one season. I love it...they have to start somewhere...but to dedicate half the section to them is nuts. Truth be told, there were a couple games this season where even the end "Rowdy" seats weren't filled.Duke is a convenient reference for college fans since their student section is on ESPN more often than Terrel Owens and Barry Bonds combined, but what goes on there doesn't apply in Akron. Take Maryland as a different example. Seat licenses near the court run $10K+ per season. They don't have students all over the prime seating. Few others do either. The JAR needs to be gutted and reconfigured to accomodate more alumni AND students. It was fine for 20 years while the Zips sucked. Now that the University has finally committed itself to putting a quality product on the court the heat will be on to get the thing done right...like they should have back in the early 80's. UADavid
Amen...eventually we'll get one of the lower sections...I hopeThis years student section would not have filled one lower section this year. Maybe in the future there will be enough interest for that to happen. I doubt the students will be able to purchase those seats though. The athletic department counts on the season ticket holders to help with the costs of having these programs. I doubt the lower bowl will ever be turned over to the students. The University will need to build a proper arena to accomplish that. It also will be some time after the new football stadium is built, so don't try holding your breath, it will be a while. zipsbandman
They could possibly construct larger platforms on the endcourt and extend them all the way to the corners. That wouldn't be too major and would accomidate more students.

I just love when people think they know you through an Internet message board! For your information, I've been a Zips fan since 1998, when my sister first attended the school. I started going to games then, came to UA in 2000, and have been to just about every home contest ever since (work conflicted at times). I have gone to road games, the MAC tourney every year, etc. I graduated in December and continue to follow the Zips for as long as I live. If you want to hold it against me that I was born later than you, that's fine. Whatever makes you feel better. Want to call me a loudmouth? Whatever. Again, if that makes you feel good about yourself, that's cool. Just don't try acting like you know anything about me or what kind of fan I am just because we disagree on something. There are people at the games that have been doing so for 30, 40, 50 years. You seem to think that you can shoot your mouth off at these long time fans because they don't meet your level of enthusiasm. The only thing I hold against you is your incessant need to tell others they aren't doing enough. Back off on the criticism, we're all Zip fans. I guess we'll never agree on this issue. I hope in 40 years some young grad isn't bitching at you.
zen
I love how people think an antagonist attack is going to movtivate people. You would think that someone who is in, or graduated from college would have a better understanding of human nature than this. If you want the "oldies" to pick it up a bit, do you really think that bitching and fighting will encourage them to see it your way? I mean hell, we are supposed to be on the same side here. I hope in 40 years some young grad isn't bitching at you. Hey it's my opinion, and obviously there are others who feel the same way. And in 40 years if I forget that I can help out the students out with some cheers or by doing a defense chant and clapping my hands, I hope some young grad "bitches" at me and reminds me of what to do. Coming to the games is a great way of supporting the team, and it's appreciated...but if we ever want to be a top notch program, that includes fans who make a difference in the game. Just my opinion...you can get defensive and say I'm disrespecting the alumni...but in my eyes, me and others who have said they need to be more involved are doing so because we know they are great fans, and we know that both us and them have yet to reach our full potential as a home crowd. If you want the "oldies" to pick it up a bit, do you really think that bitching and fighting will encourage them to see it your way? I mean hell, we are supposed to be on the same side here. The students have tried. We wave and motion our arms for them to stand at big moments...we try to get them to join us in chants. Nothing has worked thus far. I don't see this as disrespect. We've shown appreciation to them for coming. As I said, me and my friends always try to tlak to the alumni we see and let them know we appreciate them coming out. My buddy even gave one an extra Fear the Roo shirt at one of the home games because they said they hadnt gotten a chance to buy one yet. The students arent claiming to be perfect either...we need to step it up a notch too. Look around...you think Ohio State's alumni sit there quietly? Do you think Gonzaga's does? Heck, even Can't State's alumni gets into it (although we need to remain classy). Those are top notch, winning programs. Deep down, you know that if this school is ever going to get any kind of attention, locally or nationally, that the team has to win and the fans have to become a factor. Can you imagine if the students became more organized...if more of them came out...and if the alumni started chiming in on the defense and let's go Zips chants? My god...we were undefeated at home this year with a couple hundred students making all the noise...can you imagine how much other teams would fear coming to the JAR if the entire crowd participated? The students have accepted that challenge. They've tried to become more organized, tried to get their peers out to more games, tried to be loud and proud at every game...and it's a work in progress...still not there. But the students realize that to become a major program, we have to act like it, and have started to try to improve themselves. Alumni can follow suit...or they can say they are disrespected, or complain about how we don't appreciate them, or talk about how they were there 30-40 years ago, or whatever they want to talk about...With as much energy as it's taking for excuses, you'd think that they could clap their hands and say defense every few minutes... I don't tell sgm405 or others how to behave at games. I point out that sgm405 shouldn't criticize the Ak-Oldies for not doing enough and telling them they need to do more. That would be regulating their conduct. I speak out for the oldies because many of them may not know this forum exists. I think the Ak-Rowdies do a great job at the games and I'm right there with them cheering on the team. This whole argument that the older fans sit on their hands is false. They may not be as demonstrative as the students but honestly,do you really expect them to be? They are and were great fans before this renewed interest in the team.Main Entry: op·por·tun·ism Pronunciation: -'tü-"ni-z&m, -'tyü-Function: noun: the art, policy, or practice of taking advantage of opportunities or circumstances often with little regard for principles or consequencesIf anyone exhibits opportunism on this board it is you msopher.
