THIS is the Akron team I was expecting to see this year.

If we had Tree (and even better Harney too) yesterday we would have won in regulation. Tree is an absolute monster on the boards, and the perfect complement to a team that likes to take outside shots.

We won't play like this every night, no one ever does.

But this team has what it takes to advance.

You can tell that Melo has talent, but he really needs to slow it down. He plays out of control.

Remember Rico's early games at the point for the Zips? Remember Humpty's early games at the point for the Zips?

PG has lots of responsibilities on the floor. It takes time to adjust. Melo's going to be just fine as he gets a feel for playing at this level.

The seniors played like seniors today. CG filled up the stats sheet, Zeke filled up the block and put a lid on our basket, and Walsh was the Polamalu of the zips (where ever there is a play, there you see Walsh making it).

Anytime our seniors play like they did today, we end up winning.

As best as I can interpret the bracket, the Zips will play at 1:30 pm EST Sunday against the winner of this evening's Providence-Penn State game, with the broadcast on ESPNU. So we'll see how the Zips perform with all players available against a decent major opponent.

I hope we draw Providence. For purely silly reasons.

Growing up in the East, Providence was ALWAYS all over the media as a major program. It was always big news when they played St. Johns or St. Bonnies or whatever. So it would be nice (in my mind) to beat a team like that, even if they no longer have their former glory.

I am with you. I have great friends who live in a Providence suburb and are PC fans. I will be there over Thanksgiving and

hope to watch the Lady Zips play PC next Saturday.

Can someone explain how the brackets work?

If we play at 1:30 Sunday, that is the 5th place game. Why would we be playing for 5th and not 3rd? Would we not be one of two teams with only one tourney loss, therefore playing for third?

Or did the poster who stated that we play at 1:30 misread the brackets?

Would not third place the the team that lost only one game? Or does losing in the first round automatically bump you into the 5th or 7th place round?

Very nice performance today against a decent opponent. Hope it puts to rest some of the doom and gloom.

Observations:

1. CG... obviously feeling a little better!

2. Abreu still not 100%, but played like a leader.

Zeke... solid presence in the paint.

Huge having Tree and Harney back, and they both contributed nicely. They showed just how much we missed them at Coastal and against Okla. St. the other morning.

Walsh... played like a senior leader, just like CG and Zeke.

I really like Kretzer. Just scratching the surface with this kid.

I still expect great things from this group this year. Let's go get the next one!

GO ZIPS!

Well, the performance after halftime certainly put to rest from this thread the master of Zips doom and gloom. :)

Lots of kudos to all the players who contributed to this win. But Chauncey deserves a special shout-out after all the grief he was taking for not appearing to perform up to par while he was battling through his injured knee. Imagine what he could do if he was 100%!

This brings up an interesting point. With Tree and Harney back, I wasn't expecting Kretzer to start. But after starting and once again playing long minutes, it appears as if he's achieved something that's exceedingly rare on a Coach Dambrot team -- earning a starting position as a true freshman. That starting wing/small forward position used to be Chauncey's. But today's results were spectacular with Chauncey coming off the bench and providing a big energy boost.

The big question is whether or not Chauncey can be happy coming off the bench or if he's going to feel like he was "demoted." I'd really be interested in lumberjack's take on this. Is it more important to Chauncey to be a starter or to give the team a big boost off the bench as Q did last season?
