MLS Power Rankings Week 9: Portland Timbers just keep climbing higher & higher

Several of the Power Rankings Politburo can make pretty good arguments for this team being No. 1 in the rankings. They dismantled Houston at home. They dismantled San Jose at home. They drew the Quakes at Buck Shaw, then they simply outplayed Sporting in KC. Who does that? The answer is "a really, really good team."

That brought tears to my eyes. What an incredible move by Porter, the Timbers organization and especially the fans. OUTSTANDING!

+1 Very classy.

Just posted this in the PDL thread, but applies here as well.

Timbers U-23 roster has been finalized. We already knew Gallego and Brenes would be playing for Portland this season, but Abdul-Salam has also been added to the roster as well as Meves.

http://www.portlandtimbers.com/news/2013/0...ter-2013-season

I wasn't exactly sure what Meves' status was prior to this. Although he was drafted by the Timbers, he is no longer on the roster and was at one point listed as a "non-roster" player or something like that.

The Portland-Akron connection continues to grow. It's been about five months since Caleb Porter left Akron, but he continues to help this team out. It's nice to know that losing him to the pros has more of a benefit to our program than just the name dropping of our university and the knowledge of where Porter came from.

This is somewhat old news, but I particularly liked reading this:

...While no one likes to see their favorite team’s coach fined, this should be seen as a positive from Timbers supporters. Porter has already shown that he can turn a cellar dweller into a playoff team in one offseason and after his actions on Wednesday, the Timbers Army know that he is willing to fight for his squad no matter the cost.

The penalty cost the Timbers two points but they still drew against the top of the table on the road. This result would’ve been remarkable in the Timbers first two season but under Porter it still isn’t good enough. This team will go along way if they play the passion of their coach and so far this season, they’ve done just that.

Victor Souto scores in his first match with the Timbers U23s.

Timbers U-23s defeat SeaWolves FC 2-0

Making his team debut, Souto provided the insurance goal late in the match. A free kick by Brenes from the right side was chested down inside the box by forward Mark Sherrod and Souto was in position to drive the ball from 15 yards out inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Notice that they drew 6000 to the match. Wow! Wonder if the Sounders U-23s (Kitsap?) can match THAT?

Portland Timbers stand tall among MLS ranks

...Every market is different, yet there are similar fits in Kansas City, where Sporting KC has found a rabid following in the nation's 37th largest city, and Columbus, where the Crew have increased attendance from last season despite playing in football-crazed Ohio.

Caleb Porter knows all about the Buckeye State.

The first-year Portland head coach left the University of Akron in August 2012, where he had a 123-18-17 record, including a national championship in 2010, to join the Timbers.

And Porter took a pay cut to do so.

"The passion here is unmatched," said Porter, who turned down D.C. United a few years earlier. "If I was going to leave my situation (in Akron) -- where we had 5,000 fans at each game, which was very passionate for college soccer and where a lot of people were into it and cared -- if I was going to leave that, it would have to be something similar but even of a much bigger magnitude....

Edit: A slight error in that Caleb didn't leave in August 2012 but was named Timbers HC in August 2012...oh well. Caleb is proud of what he did at Akron as he/we should be, and I will always be a fan.

Timbers held Galaxy to a 0-0 draw in LA. The game was ugly, but Portland's centerbacks and GK Donovan Ricketts came up big a few times to shut down Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan. Timbers are now unbeaten in their last 14 and still only have one loss on the season, good enough for 3rd in the West and 4th overall.

According to @TimbersFC, Caleb Porter now holds longest unbeaten streak by a first year head coach in MLS history.

Awesome read! Thanks for posting.

I have to admit I've been the one to inquire whether CP's college to pro transition might resemble John Calipari's somewhat, given the boatload of talent both coaches have assembled in college. But this notion has been utterly refuted by the play of Timbers this season! CP, you are the man!

This is a great read, and I'm extremely happy for the way things are going in Portland with Caleb as Head Coach. I wasn't able to work out a trip to the PNW this summer as I had hoped. July 7th in Columbus should be fun to witness the Timbers in person and to see Caleb, Darlington, Ben Zemanaski, Michael Nanchoff (hopefully), as well as Chad Barson. As much as I'd like to see Wil that day, too, I hope he and the US U-20's are still competing in Turkey at that time.

Parts I and II of Top Drawer Soccer's interview with Caleb Porter.

Also, MLS's podcast March to the Match spoke with Porter the other day, I haven't listened to it yet, but here it is

Edit: okay now I listened to it, excellent interview. Porter goes in-depth discussing his team's tactics, his philosophies, as well as some of his hopes for the future of the organization with the academy, plus more.
