Zip_ME87
"I just let Darlington go; the less you say to him the better" CP I heard that, too, from Caleb at the end of the match, but then... Darlington Nagbe, Diego Valeri inspire Portland Timbers comeback Porter fires up Nagbe; Ryan Johnson praises Valeri's play ... "Sometimes with Darlington you have to give him a kick in the ass,” Porter said after his Portland Timbers rallied from a two-goal deficit to draw the New York Red Bulls 3-3 on Sunday at JELD-WEN Field, “in a positive way, you know, pump him up." And with the Timbers facing a 3-1 halftime deficit, Porter had just such a talk with the young midfielder/forward – who he coached at the University of Akron before Nagbe became the Timbers’ first pick of the 2011 SuperDraft. Nagbe responded by kick starting the Timbers rally with a 56th-minute goal, then teaming up with new his new attacking partners to inspire the equalizer just seven minutes from full time. “He’s been telling me the same thing since I was 17,” Nagbe said of his coach’s motivational tactics. “He’s a great coach, a great guy and he knows how to motivate every single player, which is what I think is great about him.” ... “Part of it is just telling Darlington, instead of a midfielder, he needed to play more like a striker and get at their right back and go after him,” Porter said of Nagbe’s matchup with Kosuke Kimura. “We knew that was perhaps a matchup we could win. The light bulb went on. And he was a handful in that second half. I felt he was a big part of us turning the game around.” ... But more so, how Caleb's personnel actions paid off the final 45. Kimura is a well respected MLS journeyman, and at the time I was surprised CP let him go. It's getting harder to doubt Coach Porter. As the announcers said (and I thought Chris Sullivan was excellent BTW), this Port(er)land team has a completely new attitude.

bisbee
Break up the Impact! Can't wait until Saturday when the Sounders face Portland before 60K plus at the Clink. Will be up there for the match. Have seen both of Portlands matches. Nagbe is playing great and their defense is awful. Unless they build a new stadium Porters style will be hampered by their tiny field. It was widened by 4 yards but is still like a postage stamp. The announcers stated during last night's Timbers match that he had attended the Sounders-Impact match on March 2nd (one week prior to playing the Impact). Zip_ME87
I wonder at the actual dimensions of JW Field. It certainly looks small and crowded. 74 yards x 110 yards according to this article. If I remember correctly, that's approximately 4 yards narrower than our Cub Cadet Field.
Z.I.P.
74 yards x 110 yards according to this article. If I remember correctly, that's approximately 4 yards narrower than our Cub Cadet Field. The stadium was originally designed for baseball -- the PCL Timbers. It's also home for Portland State football (GoViks, an alma mater mio). I think it was redesigned when the MLS came knocking, but they always get it wrong in PDX. When I was a student they built a field on campus for PSU women's soccer, and it was built so small it ended up as a football practice field, and not even wide enough for a full FB field, so PSU has to play soccer at a HS field. I'm making plans to visit the Northwest this spring, and hoping to take in at least a game in Portland (May 2 vs Revs, maybe), and will be looking at Sounders sked around that time. Hey Bisbee, I might look U up!
Zip_ME87
I just thought this was an interesting/ fun read ... I think I joined some time ago. 6) I cannot tell you how optimistic I am about the rest of the season. You can accuse me of joining Caleb Porter’s cult if you want (and, by the way, does he have a cult? Because if he does, I’d totally join…), but I think this new playing style has finally clicked, I think Porter is very close to figuring out what lineup works best, and I’m no longer questioning if we can make the playoffs. We will. There’s no doubt. The only question is whether we’ll be the number one seed.

Zip_ME87
Timbers Reserves defeat Earthquakes Reserves 2-1 Nanchoff brace against San Jose helps Timbers Reserves to third win in four games High pressure by the Timbers Reserves helped set up the game’s opening strike. Nanchoff and midfielder Ben Zemanski were able to win possession of the ball in the Earthquakes Reserves’ defensive third. Nanchoff then set up for a shot from inside the box and hit the ball past Bingham, who was off his line, and into the left side of the goal. Zip_ME87
Commentary: Timbers coach setting new tone It's taken Porter exactly one training camp and five regular season matches to instill his will and install his system. And you know what? It's working. This team is displaying a toughness we didn't see in its previous two Major League Soccer seasons. The players have a grit about them, which allows them to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat. That's something they did in three straight games after losing the season opener. Now they've won two in a row, while earning at least one point in five straight matches. "One of the things I told the guys," Porter said following his teams most recent win on Sunday night over San Jose, "teams that have the winning culture, and the intangibles, and the belief find a way to win games." Zip_ME87
A stop and chat with new Timbers coach Caleb Porter This is over a month old, but a nice read for an Akron alum/fan. One excerpt... (You’ve talked about Zakuani and Yedlin, will you take the time either before or after the game to appreciate the influence the Akron program is now having in MLS?) “There are a lot of Akron guys around the league, and there are going to be a lot of games that we play where there are Akron guys on the other side and on the other team. I think it’s one of those things where I’ll be so focused on the game that I really won’t take a step back to maybe appreciate the fact that there are some guys on the other team that used to be my guys. I’m a competitor and, again, I think when the whistle blows, I don’t care who we’re playing against. I want to win. And yes, these are players that I coached, that I care for, and I will be rooting for — except for when we’re playing them. After the game, I’m sure we’ll share a moment and a chat. But prior to the game, I don’t think there will be much discussion.”
