Zipmeister Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 Too good not to share! Before I learned to hate the Big 10, I too enjoyed watching the Buckeyes play. It was neat when they won cause I was a kid from Ohio, but it was just as fun when they lost cause Woody would always find somebody to punch. Quote
legendofzippy Posted August 2, 2013 Report Posted August 2, 2013 As has been discussed in many threads on this forum, conferences like the MAC are basically hosed in the NCAA having to compete with programs like Alabama or any other top program. It's just never going to happen. So rooting for your alma mater and the team from your youth - who cares? It would be nice if they went to like 10 conferences, with a top 5 and lower 5 split up. Give us both a playoff system and a championship. Why not? Wouldn't this generate more money? I'd rather know we had a legitimate shot at a championship rather than hopes of getting slaughtered in a BCS bowl one day. Call it the mid-major championship or something. Quote

Hmmmm, Boise State was always a top program? I agree that it's just never going to happen if the attitude is it's just never going to happen. Quote

I'd rather know we had a legitimate shot at a championship rather than hopes of getting slaughtered in a BCS bowl one day. Call it the mid-major championship or something. I know a lot of people feel the way it is stated above. I just disagree. I feel that an actual divide between the so-called 'big schools' and the mid-majors would relegate MAC schools to what the FCS is now. I want Akron and really all the rest of the non-BCS conferences to stick around at the top level of college athletics including college football. While the Akrons of the world may never be up there with the Ohio States and Oklahomas of the world, I honestly believe that there are ways to level the playing field a little more in FBS college football. To me a big step in doing this would be for college football to have a championship playoff that included the champions of every conference and only a very limited number of other participants. this would be similar to what the NFL currently does. The key to me is equal access. If recruits know they can make the championship playoff at a MAC school just like they can at a Big XII school then it can only help things like recruiting and national attention. I think a system like that would go a long way toward leveling the playing field significantly. The problem is that it would likely take a number of years for this 'leveling' to really take effect and in the meantime the $$$ revenues from TV and such may take a hit. That is why they won't ever do it. Still, I have seen progress. NIU was in the Orange Bowl last year. Non-BCS schools have won some of the most prestigious bowl games. MAC games are on national TV more than ever, even if they are mostly on weeknights. These things never happened a generation ago. I'd hate to see there be an official divide now like some suggest. Maybe I am in the minority but I'd rather see where things are another generation from now if the recent trends continue. Quote

I agree that it's just never going to happen if the attitude is it's just never going to happen. It's about money. MAC schools will never be able to afford the top coaches, top facilities, etc. that recruits will go to. Can't State couldn't keep their coach from leaving for Purdue, which hasn't been relevant in quite some time. But it's top 5 conference member, so it's a no brainer. Here, check out the Alabama assistant salaries... Bonuses for Alabama coaches up 33 percent to almost $1.5 million Quote
Zips Win! Posted August 5, 2013 Report Posted August 5, 2013 The response posted to the article says it best.......Although he forgot to mention win a national championship.... Dude is dead on! When you are no longer a child, you put away childish things... … that includes rooting for the “state school” that you don’t attend. Particularly when they are PLAYING THE SCHOOL THAT YOU ACTUALLY DO ATTEND. Sorry, rooting for Big Ten U. when you attend a MAC school is the epitome of weak sauce. The MAC is damn good. Fights above it’s weight class. Went to an Orange Bowl, hoops Sweet 16 and College World Series in the past year. Imagine what the league could accomplish if its students and alumni actually paid as much attention to it as they do some school with which they have no connection whatsoever. Also, given the disrespect that Big Ten fans heap on MAC schools, and the way Big Ten schools use Midwest state legislatures to screw over MAC universities when it comes to funding, I have no earthly idea why any sane MAC student or alum would want to cheer for them. by Papa Lou BSU on Aug 1, 2013 | 10:58 PM ↩reply Quote
