Zips Recruiting top talent

Since the season is over now, not sure if this topic is worth being in this page or the recruiting page. If the moderators feel that this should be in the recruiting page, please move it there then. Just wanted to know what rest of ZN.o feels about what I've been seeing just recently.

I went onto the ESPN recruiting page, and went to see if there was anything entertaining on the Akron recruiting trail .

I saw 2014 and thought it wasn't great, but better than the past few seasons. Then I looked at the 2015 offers. WOW

Say Hello, to Josh Rosen, the 2015 #1 QB Prospect .

The reason for starting this topic was this question I have about Akron Zips recruiting: How hard is Terry really going after these recruits? And if so, is he wasting his time on these recruits, when he could be spending that time on getting the MAC-above MAC recruits? Or should he at least offer these recruits to see if any of them are interested? Just wonder what ZN.o thinks about how Bowden and the staff is recruiting incoming talent.

This is not a bash on Bowden and the staff. In my opinion, they should be going after at least a few of these recruits. You get one or two of these type of recruits, and you're the class of the MAC. This is just showing where Terry wants this program to be, and I believe that that in itself, will help recruiting.

You cant catch a trophy fish without casting in a line.

I like seeing us at least offer these kids. I doubt we spend too much of our resources on these kids, but Terry wants to get in with these better programs and at least make a presence. If we get to NIU's level with this staff, who knows if you land one or two guys that you wouldnt expect to get.

That should be the goal. That would mean we'd someday be playing in two major bowl games in a row. I think Akron would have a chance to develop a Cincinnati-like following if that happened, and carve out our own territory right in the middle of Ohio.

He did the same thing for the 2013 and 2014 classes. It didn't land us a single top recruit.

I think it's a waste of resources, until we at least have gone to a bowl game. Focus on getting "diamonds in the rough" like Jordan Lynch or Eric Fisher. Neither of them had offers from any other school.

I doubt we are wasting resources on the very top guys. Probably only the price of a postage stamp, envelope and a piece of paper. I am sure they see these guys at camps they travel to.

I remember Terry speaking at the breakfast with the Bowdens. He said he was going to have his guys right in there with the OSU staff looking at players because he wanted them to know we were there. Terry knows what he is doing. He has already found some diamond in the roughs (Dylan Evans, Jatavis Brown, Franshon Bickley, etc..).

It is pretty darn tough to get better players to buy into a school that has 1-11 records three straight years. Breaking the mold

with a 5-7 record changes the message. The chances of getting better talent to commit has to improve with the better record.

Beating Toledo was the best win on the schedule. Quality team, headed to a bowl, got taken down a few pegs. Kudos to the Zips.

The future schedule also improves the chances. Having a top quality head coach does not hurt either. Bowden is a great asset to Akron.

You have to offer the guys. Some guys don't want to go to a bigger school and want to be assured of early playing time.

Their has to be some interest for them to offer. Just because you offer, doesn't mean you are strongly recruiting.

One day we will land a couple studs and that will help things grow.

This topic, in general, is what I've been wondering about the most the past few days. We just had our most successful season in a very long time and we should enjoy this Toledo win for quite a while, but the lifeblood of any college team is recruiting. Are we in a better spot there? So far I'm not sure.

If we really want to be a top MAC program, I think we have to be a top-3 destination in conference. What I was trying to do is picture what I would do if I had offers from all MAC teams and no one else, and lived somewhere that didn't provide me with loyalty to any. Is Akron in my top 3? To be honest, I can't imagine. NIU, BG, Ball State, OU, Toledo.... these are still top destinations IMO. And if Miami gets the right head coach, that's still a great destination too.

So I think we still have a ways to go, but I do feel we're pointed in the right direction.

At the end of last season I would have agreed with you. After this season I think we have vaulted into a top 3 destination based on having a coaching staff that pulls more weight than any team in the MAC, a nice turnaround in record to prove it and superior facilities.

The Bowden name carries a lot of weight.

If my recruiting trip was during one of our home games (empty stands) I would not be impressed……I know, I know…I have beaten this comment to a pulp but couldn't help it. :horse::chair:
