2014 Zips in Pro Leagues Domestic and International

Recommended Posts

You guys know the drill here. 2014 edition of the happenings of our former Zips in their professional careers. I was going to use the same title, but then I realized we had guys like Ampai and Zarek playing abroad, and when I added that the title just became far too convoluted, so I tried to make it shorter and sweeter.

Two big pieces of news today. Teal was traded to New England for a 2015 first round draft pick. This will reunite him with former Zip Scott Caldwell who wasn't too scared to take a PK his freshman year in the 2009 final.

Other interesting piece of info was that Bryan Gallego was sent on a season-long loan to Sacramento Republic FC of the USL Pro. As you may or may not know, MLS has a deal with USL where each MLS team either needs to partner with a USL team and send players on loan, or field their own squad to compete in USL.

    Well done, Yaz.

Are you insinuating that Teal Bunbury was too scared to take his PK in the 2009 Final?

Probably shouldn't perpetuate a rumor that I have no way of knowing the truth about, but word going around after that season ended was that he was asked to take one of the PKs but didn't want the pressure of it. Honestly I couldn't totally blame him, I'd probably piss my pants if I were in that situation, but it kind of comes with the gig. Full disclosure though, there were just rumblings of this, there could absolutely be no truth to that.

EDIT: Found an old article that said Teal had a groin issue that prevented him from taking a PK. I don't know, but well all know Teal can take penalty kicks...

The 91st Minute Blog over at TDS posted a list of their Top Ten: MLS's Most Entertainingly Technical Players, and they ranked Darlington Nagbe #1 (over players like Thierry Henry, Landycakes, and Dempsey). Obviously this list means virtually nothing, but still pretty cool to see.

I beg to differ. I think this list is marginally important. DarNag is one the most technically gifted players I have ever seen, certainly in the MLS. It is good that he is finally gaining proper respect.

National rumors persist that Shaun Docking (Akron, 1988) will soon be named new Head Coach of East Tennessee State University (ETSU). This after 16 seasons coaching Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Wow! Word is that he grew frustrated with Coastal’s facilities.

If that is indeed true, it proves (to me, at least) that Zips definitely could have had him if they had wanted him.

What does this have to do with Zips in Pro Leagues?

A former Zip, coaching professionally.. in a league?.... ok, its a bit of a stretch.

I just did not think it was worth a new thread. Remarkable news nonetheless.

I agree...it's a bit of a stretch. And, I've given it too much attention.

Sorry, but I mistakenly posted this on LAST YEAR'S pro-Zips thread. Only Eric Stevenson remains in MLS of Akron draftees. http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/status-of-2014-mls-draftees_aid32632

In my opinion, it doesn't really surprise me, but it's easy to say now. I never really thought this Akron draft class was rated very high. Stevenson and Gallego were the top of this group. I expect the other boys to try out the NPSL or USLPRO. I expect Stevenson to be loaned just as Gallego was to Sacramento.

Thanks ZIP and Yaznasty for those updates. I hadn't seen that our other draftees had been cut or that Blair had found a place in the NASL.

Some news today out of Columbus, where Wil Trapp is named Columbus Crew Vice Captain for the 2014 season. He wore the armband a few times in preseason and will be backing up US International Michael Parkhurst. Parkhust is on the bubble for making the World Cup squad, and if he were to make it, Wil would skipper the team in his place. Pretty big for a player in his second year, in my opinion.
