University of Akron Soccer Tournament this weekend

Recommended Posts

We have a young team who have been working very hard to be successful. Victor Souto is available for our tournament. The Zips are celebrating 60 years of collegiate soccer, and Friday (September 12th) is the National Day of Encouragement. Let's show up in large numbers to celebrate our program and support our team.

GO ZIPS!

THIS IS AKRON!

Going into this weekend and another round of games I wanted to look back at some of the stats over the last couple of years it is very apparent this team is lacking both on offense and defense. Just looking at some of the defensive stats its very apparent this team is at a different caliber then the privous years. Most of that might be because of the lack of veterans on this team. Here is a quick look at what I am talking about.

2014 - Shots against: 55 Saves: 20 Save%: .833% = 3 games

2013 - I could not find stats

2012 - Shots against: ? Saves: 53 Save%: .869% = 22 games

2011 - Shots against: 199 Saves: 57 Save%: .770% = 22 games

2010 - Shots against: 123 Saves: 54 Save%: .771% = 25 games

2009 - Shots against: 130 Saves: 48 Save%: .877% = 25 games

There has been only 3 games so far this year and already we are at almost half the amount of saves as any of the previous 5 years season totals. That is an alarming stat. Not only that, Fenlason is tied for #9 in all of D1 for # of saves and #6 in saves per game. These are stats and achievements this team should not be proud of. The reasons why we are giving up more shots, which we all know more shots lead to more goals, starts with the lack of possession and the giveaways in our own half. Its crazy to think that if Fenlason stays on this path he will have close to 150 saves this year.

It is alarming, but it is a young team. We lost recruiting ability in 2012 when Caleb announced prior to the season that he was leaving, and we didn't know for half the season who the new coach would be. Then we lost Gallego, Brenes, Quinn, Stevenson, and Dershang, and a number of last years' recruits didn't work out. Add to that, Souto's suspension and Seremba's 2nd season-ending injury. Consequently, we have a lot of Freshmen, and this team needs time to recoup and gel. Hopefully, Victor will help immensely. I wish fans could be a little more patient and supportive, and see how it plays out.

Zipman222 http://zipsnation.org/forums/topic/31914-university-of-akron-soccer-tournament-this-weekend/?p=226480 here are the stats 2013 http://www.gozips.com/sports/msoc/2013-14/2013_Season_Statistics.pdf

You make a very good point about giving up shots and it is probably not just possession and turnovers that are causing this:

- MFs do fail to control the play to date but also tend to be late getting compact, placing us in many even man situations with the Fwds and AM. Line has to drop and doesn't challenge as they should, shots are taken.

- Back line may be finding the mix but seems like one CB and LB are still up for grabs. Need to get that put away soon. Cregan looked good, maybe that is one down one to go.

- Keeper has quickness but is small/slight for D1. When the opposing coach sees that they will be told to shoot early and often and be all over the frame. Zips recruited 3 similar w Pina 6-0/Fenlason 6-0/Demoya 5-10 in a row after 6-2 200? Neves for some reason (average D1 is 6-2/6-3 190).

That all said if the offense can't generate goals it does not matter what you are doing defensively, you will not win games. But still, if you are not prolific in scoring you have to keep it close to get points.

Therefore I Encourage them to score more and give less on this NDOE and take a few games at home this weekend!!

Here is how I would trot out the team. There have been numerous changes recently, so just about anything goes.....

Sean at Left Back. Interesting. We haven't tried that yet have we?

No. And there is no indication whatsoever that this is being considered by anyone who matters. ;)

13Sepe is quick and has good endurance for those long runs. His offensive acumen is at a level we have been lacking from LB position. He is also a very good tackler.

I say try him there. Back line cannot afford to start more than one frosh at a time, and 14Cregan looks like he will get his shot at CB tonight vs. UCF.

I agree on both. I hadn't thought about Sean moving back there, but I think your idea and reasoning are excellent.
