Akron is no Toledo

From time to time on this site, a Toledo fan will remind us how much better they are than us. After conducting some research I am forced to admit that when it comes to football Akron is no Toledo. Akron completed their 14th year in the MAC last year. I’ll let you look up the Zips record over that time period to prove my point, but I’ll give you a heads up….the Zip’s record during their first 14 years in the league is not close to the Rocket’s record during their first 14 years in the MAC – Thank you Jesus. The Rockets joined the MAC in 1952. Over the following 14 campaigns they amassed an overall record of 45-80-4 (.349). This kind of sucks, but it looks good compared to their MAC record over the same period 20-59 (.253). Fourteen years in the MAC with two winning records (3-2 in both 1954 and 1957), six years with only one league win, two years with NO MAC wins (0-6 in 1959 and 1960). My point – in almost all cases it takes it takes time to build a good D1 program and Akron is doing so at a faster pace than did Toledo. By the way, the winner of this years game goes up 8-7 in the all-time series between the schools.

Not sure what you are trying to say here. Toledo joined the MAC in the 50's. It was a much different era and there wasn't even the DI-A and DI-AA classifications. Of course after the first 16 years in the MAC, Toledo won 4 of the next 5 MAC titles. I doubt Akron, or anyone for that, is going to win 3 of the next 4 titles (Akron won last year so that would give them 4 of 5).Finally, Division I didn't even come about until 1973. Toledo has been in Division I ever since it started in 1973, but before that there was College Division and University Division. College Division is for smaller schools and that is what Toledo was when they joined the MAC up until 1962. In 1962 Toledo became University Division, which is for bigger schools. This is much like Division I.So, you should really compare UT's record at the highest level of competition which is from 1962 onward. In that first 14 years, Toledo went 78-55-2 overall. I don't know the exact conference record, but Toledo won 4 MAC titles in that span and had three seasons that they were undefeated in conference play.In today's game, it does take time to build a good DI-A program and Akron has appeared to finally get to that point. But you just can't compare today's game with the 1950's when Division I wasn't even really around.

I see a sucka, er, a fish, quickly took the bait.
It's all about timing folks. Today was my first visit back to your pouch since about a week or two ago, therefore the post.Of course, it is only taken bait if I would have sat here and said bad things.....which I did not. I merely explained common sense in the world in the 90's and 2000's as opposed to the 50's and the 60's where there was no Division I. I also said that it appears Akron has got to the point where the are a successful DI-A football school. Someone taking the bait would never say that.I have also never come here and said that Akron was not as good as Toledo....NEVER. So I know his comments about that are not about me, but some other Rocket fan(s).My last visit to this site, I said how sorry I was to hear about the accident the Florida recruit was in. The last time before that I said good luck against Penn State and I hope you beat them.By the way, I happen to run a website about UT athletics and I am in the MAC News Media Association and I feel no reason to keep my vote for MAC East Division winner a secret. When I voted about 2 weeks ago, I selected Akron to win the MAC East. You won't hear me putting down the Akron football program.

Yeah, rocketfootball added a great post. Thanks! It was intelligent and well written. I'm excited about the direction Akron football is headed (it's been a long time coming) and I'm excited about a great rivalry between Akron and Toledo - 2 of Ohio's "6 Big Cities!" And 2 great universities! Whenever any MAC school is playing out of conference, I'm most definitely for the MAC school, so I loved seeing Toledo absolutely pound UTEP in their bowl game last year!!! It was great for the MAC! But watch out rocketfootball... the Zips are on the threshold of MAC dominance!!! Be afraid. Be very afraid! FEAR THE ROO!

Right now we got our hands full with NIU. I don't know how you managed to beat them twice last season. Anyway, they are going to be very, very, very good this fall. They scare me A LOT!And unforunately their fans know just how good they are, so they believe they are already superior to all other MAC schools despite not winning a MAC Title since the mid 80's.

Hopefully a MAC school finishes ranked at the end of this year. Northern Ill, Miami, and Toledo are the only teams to have done this in the past 10 years I believe. I honestly don't think Akron has a shot at being ranked. Even if we beat NC State and finished 9-3.

akron is no toledo or NIU. yet. we can't just say one good year makes us on par with those school's history of winning. as far as the future goes and the present, there is no doubt in my mind that we are equal with them. the toledo game just might be the mac game of the year. i can't bash toledo or NIU. i have nothing but respect for both programs. miami, on the other hand, can go to hell. if we win just one game this year, i hope we destroy those arrogant bastards. we have to beat miami to be the best in the east without debate.

marshall was 13-0 in 1999, including an easy win over brigham young in the MCB, so its a safe bet they finished in the top 25. i miss having them in the MAC. they had some nice rivalries, including miami and toledo. plus, the game where akron had the miracle comeback in the rubber bowl against marshall was a great game to watch. that might have been charlie frye's greatest moment. espn made that an instant classic.
