I feel bad for the kid also. Different circumstances, but we lost our best player too. So, I guess we'll see how the two teams match up right now with their remaining parts.

Maybe the key thing here is that it makes that final conference game at Ken+ as a good possibility of a win, if we need it. And winning that final game at Ken+ has meant a lot in some previous years.

Reggie's mild case of mono last season caused him to miss 5 games. But mono severity varies wildly and could extend from a few weeks to many months.

Having family in the medical profession, you are correct. Severity differs, and so does length. But for an athlete to be completely healthy and strong in a month probably isn't likely. People older than adolescent age often have longer bouts.

I remember Reggie's episode, but can't recall his particular severity, or how long it took for him to play any significant minutes after "recovery".

I actually went through this mono thing when I was 15 .....( cough...cough.. just a few years back)... and the docs said that its a virus that will always be in me. I really don't remember a whole lot while it was going on but did miss almost a month of school. They wanted me isolated from everybody, I do remember that part. I think that the big factor for Can't is how long will he be may be highly infectious to others.

So with that in mind, lets get him right back in the Can't State locker room.

Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr Virus, and most people in developed countries are exposed to it at some point during childhood, without knowing it; somewhere around half of 5-year-olds have evidence of prior infections in US studies. These infections are flu-like, which is also why a lot of the population in developed countries doesn't realize they've had it in the past. Mono-infections in children sometimes don't even have symptoms. Those with mono are not overly infectious to others, it's more likely the entire team will get the flu before they contract mono from him...ignoring the part that statistically over half of them are probably already immune from prior unknown infections.

Good info there, guess its not as bad as I thought, Back in the day though they stopped just short of wanting me to become a bubble boy, (Thats a double Seinfeld reference BTW) It was pretty much just my bedroom and bathroom for a long time. I suppose in the medical field they understand that virus much more now than back in the early 70s.

Well then, we shall have to devise another strategy to defeat those vermin..........I'll get right on it

Trust me...he's probably going to be out for a LONG time! ;) I was one of the not lucky 50% of 5 year olds who have had the virus, and even more lucky group of people to not get it in my childhood (or it just didn't become infectious), and I contracted the virus in college...because you know  ...for 6 weeks I was absolutely miserable.

Though the worst of it only took about 6-weeks, I wasn't back to 100% until at least 2.5 months after initial had symptoms.

It's a different story with Athletes. Because it's transported by saliva, the fact that these guys are breathing on each other, rubbing up against each other, etc., really increases the risk.

We darn near had an epidemic among the athletes at my high school in the late 70s. Maybe I had it and didn't even know it.

I contracted Epstein-Barr when I was about 28 years old. It took me at least 6 months before I got my energy back. One of the biggest risks when you have the disease is an enlarged spleen. You really don't want to engage in any type of contact sport out of fear of rupturing your spleen.

Many were also predicting a long recovery time for Reggie last season. He was a little off form in a couple games before they finally diagnosed mono, then he sat out 5 games. In his first game back (against Buffalo) he played 13 minutes, and then 15 minutes in the next game against Can't. The MAC tournament was next, and against OU Reggie played 27 minutes -- well above his season average of 19 minutes per game -- and hit all 4 of his field goal attempts.
