Akron Law, Campus, and City

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

What are your thoughts on UA's law school?  I am considering Akron Law, and am taking an official visit there in two weeks, but have never been to Akron, Ohio.  Your Bar pass rate is pretty impressive, and the COL in the area seems dirt-cheap.  I am not attached to living in a certain state (I have lived in 5 states over the past 6 years, and currently am in RI), but would like to have the option of moving back to PA (where I am originally from).

Your basketball team is a bit of a force in the MAC and what I have read about your rec center sounds like an incredible option to blow off some stress.  Lastly, is the area fairly dog-friendly?  I have a border collie who is coming with me, wherever I decide to attend school.

Thanks for any help!

One of my good friends from college dad was actually the former dean of the Akron law program. I've only ever heard good things about it. It's supposedly one of the best bang for your buck law programs in the country.

The campus in general has experienced something in the neighborhood of 1/2 a billion dollars worth of work in the last 15 years. This included stuff like a new student union, rec center, football stadium, and a multitude of dorms and other buildings. The dog situation will depend entirely where you live and who your landlord is. There is definitely places available that allow pets, but it will limit your options.

PS: I suggest trying Swensons on your visit. It's a 5-10 minute drive from campus, but well worth it. Get the Galley Boy and Potato teasers. You can thank me later.

I usually see the UA Law school at the top of "best bang for your buck" lists.

If you're visiting, just a heads up that half the Law school building is currently a pile of rubble. It's in the middle of major renovations and they're still in the demolition phase. Good timing for you, though. You'll get to study in a nice, new building once it's complete.

As for having a dog, there are a few dog-friendly areas. Lots of walking trails and at least one large dog park.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far.  Akron Law certainly seems like a program that is on the rise, and the ability to attend D1 hoops and football games during any down time that I may have is a plus.  To be perfectly honest, I would have likely never heard of Akron if it wasn't for the numerous Akron football games at Penn State that I attended.  I have found visiting football fans from Akron to be pleasant and enjoyable.  D1 sports definitely help a university.

My sentiments regarding the law school echo what others above have said. There is an awesome dog park about 10 minutes from campus. http://www.doggoes.com/parks/ohio/bow-wow-beach-dog-park-silver-springs-park-stow

I think the area is pretty awesome to live in. Low cost of living as you know. Not sure how great the market is for Law grads, however.  You can drive an hour and do just about anything you can think of in the Akron/Canton/Cleveland area. Beaches, national parks, professional sports, hall of fames, museums, etc. I'm originally from a few hours away and glad I moved here.

Akron's got several metro parks within a 5-10min drive of campus, depending upon where you're living in Akron.  I personally recommend the Highland Square area, great for young professionals.  My entire building is mostly law students, Graduate students, Nurse/Doctors and a few other professional career types.
