Guest Mastodon
Hey Zippers! I’m the fan of another MAC school and I just thought I would bring a little disparity to the board. While waiting for football season, I predicted each MAC team’s season (all subject to change). Here’s how I see Akron performing for the 2004 season: PENN ST* 26-34 L MIDDLE TENN ST 38-24 W VIRGINIA* 24-45 L Can't ST* 51-31 W NORTHERN ILL* 31-37 L BUFFALO 56-21 W UCF* 41-31 W BALL ST 42-21 W MARSHALL 34-38 L OHIO* 49-27 W MIAMI (OHIO) 31-41 L (6-5; 5-3) This is not meant to be inflammatory; I just want to get some discussion going. I know it’s early but tell me your predictions or thoughts (about Akron or anyone else).
JP Morgan
I would be happy if that is the way things turned out this season (with the exception of the loss to Miami, I'm never satisfied losing to them ) Not bad for a first year coach with a new system. I think "predicting" this years Zips would be better entitled "guessing." No one knows how this team will respond to JD. No one knows what the learning curve is on the new O and D. No one knows what hidden talents JD might find, or what overhyped players exist. Unless you go to the practices (open and closed ones) and see the team firsthand there's no telling. I can give you predictions if Lee was still here, because I know him, his teams and how the teams responded to him. Here it is: "Zips under Lee Ownes in 2004" PENN ST* 28-52 L In typical Ownes fashion, the team goes into a BCS school's backyard, and gets their asses handed to them. PLay a good first half then blow it midway into the 3rd quarter with overconservative play and turnovers MIDDLE TENN ST 23-28 L In typical Lee Owen fashion, coming off the BCS loss, the Zips underachieve offensively and lose a game they should win. VIRGINIA* 21-52 L Zips reeling after the MTSU loss, play like crap, embarrass themselves. Can't ST* 42-21 W Players realize the season is wasted, play for pride only. NORTHERN ILL* 35-42 L Zips always lost Road games to Western Conf. teams. BUFFALO 56-21 W Lee owned the Bulls ! UCF* 35-10 W After a week of Lee making locker room quote after quote (ie "welcome to MAC FOOTBALL"), UCF hands us our asses! BALL ST 42-21 W 4 games left in the season and Lee's job is on the line for yet another year. He plea's with the players to "win one for the gipper." They come through. MARSHALL 41-38 Another year of Marshall playing for a championship and the Zips playing for pride, unfortunatley pride isn't enough. OHIO* 34-13 W I'll give Lee this one. For some reason, He always had the Bobcats number (maybe he had their playbook) MIAMI (OHIO) 17-35 L Zips players have nothing to play for and it shows. It's probably wrong of me to even post something like this, but hell, it was fun and hopefully for you, entertaining. Anyway, I'm now more thankfull than I was 5 minutes ago that JD is here, and LO is gone. So for that matter, it was a good thing.

Guest BlueRaiderFn
JP, I don't know if I would agree with the statement a game we "should" win...Historically, we've had your number. Of course, I realize that doesn't apply to this years game, but I think we make it a good game. Honestly, if we didn't have the coach we have, I would say that the Zips and MT are an even match and very similar teams.
Zipsrifle
Raiderfan, I for one wouldn't call the MTSU game a "Should Win" game for the Zips. Over the past few years, we have dropped as many "Should Win" games as we've won. I for one think the MTSU game will give us and idea of where the Zips should be headed this year. I don't expect to take Penn State at Beaver Stadium (Zips, please prove me wrong!!). The teams (UA and MTSU) should be fairly evenly matched and if things go the way we're hoping on this board, we'll come away on top. As for any speculation about the D or O (I've been reading your page for some time now) your guess is as good as mine. I don't believe that you will be able to put your finger on the performance of either with the drastic changes that have happened.....with one exception. Charlie will put the ball where it needs to be....if our green receivers can catch, you're in trouble. We're all hoping that since JD has coached 2 Biletnikoff award winners in the past 4 years, he'll have the receivers up to speed. Beyond Frye, there are a lot of questions that will be need to be answered. Some of those answers will come during the MTSU game I'm sure. You guys are a pretty spirited group over on you're board. Hope to see you at the Rubber Bowl!
Zipsrifle
One more thing, I don't know how anyone can be making predictions this early in the year. Right now, from what I've read, we could go 2-9 or 9-2. WAY too much is up in the air.
Guest BlueRaiderFn
Rifle, I'm TOLD (Our coaches always exagerate) that we have a VERY fast receiving core and that with Kerry Wirght in the mix (our star receiver), we should do well offensivley...We are also "supposedly" deep at QB which has killed us the last three years...Two years ago we had a our 2nd string running back in at QB after we lost ALL three starters...(Which also tells you about our O-Line). Our secondary was never good and we've lost 3 starters (I think), so that will be a problem...I went to a 7 on 7 the other day against Vanderbilt and they looked good to me, but I'm biased I think we will be back to the offenseive levels that we had when we had Kelly Holcomb and Jonothan Quinn playing at QB, but we will see...I'm sure it will be a good game..I hope... zipboy
MTSU is a solid program. This is one of those we should win at our place and you should win at your place. In order for the Zips to have a good year, we need to win out at home. Looking forward to seeing you in a couple of months.
