How 'bout them Zips??!!

Men win MAC Outdoor T & F....Women win MAC Outdoor T & F...

Jackie Siefring wins Heptathalon and Matt Ludwig wins Pole Vault Friday, then yesterday Jordan Latimer wins Long Jump, while Daniella Johnson wins the Women's.  Today it was the Men's 4 x 100 team winning with Hakeem Lawrence, Taron Slone, Miles Baldwin and Joe Harrington.  Lawrence turns around and wins the 100 dash in a school record time, while Baldwin wins the 400 dash.  Curtis Richardson wins the High Jump, Ariadna Ramos Gandia wins the Women's Triple Jump.  But the multiple scorers in each event on both sides is what tipped the titles.  Men continue to dominate a small-field Conference, while the women really performed this weekend in a 12 team Conference meet.  That's men's and women's indoor AND outdoor Championships in same year!  First time ever for the Zips.  Don't think we'll have a lot of NCAA DI regional competitors....Lawrence in the 100, Siefring in the 400, Richardson and Cody Stine in the High Jump, Nikki Manson in the High Jump, Ludwig and Matt Rowland in the Pole Vault, Latimer and Terrell McClain in the Long Jump, Johnson in the Long Jump, Joe Ohiembor (men) Ramos Gandia and Weronica Gaudyn (women) in the Triple Jump.  Phil Jagers in Discus and Rodrigo Iglasias in Javelin, and Siefring and Patricia Ortega in Heptathalon.  10 guys, 6 girls....not bad!

IIRC,

These were the last events to go towards the Wagon Wheel Challenge. And with these two :champs: to add to it, we now have 7.5 points to KSUcks 6.5 points.

Which means the Wagon Wheel challenge trophy now resides in Akron along with the Wagon Wheel.

Well how about that this is the second time consecutively right?

Yep Kent won the first four, Akron has taken the last two. Thank goodness for our runners. Out of the 15 total points Akron has scored the last two years, cross country and track and field (indoor and outdoor) have scored 11 of them. (Football has two, women's basketball 1, men's basketball 0.5 and volleyball 0.5).

I just updated the wiki page on the Wagon Wheel Challenge with the results of this year's win.  This might be one of the few positives to come from the university dropping the baseball team - with Kent's usual dominance in that sport we would have tied the past two years and Kent would have retained the trophy.

I knew something weird was up when I was following live results on-line for the women's events on Saturday, but couldn't figure out how Daziah Green was so far behind in the 200 meter dash, and also what happened in the 100,, and also why Akron's 4 x 400 team was so slow....this explains it and also explains a lot about how Akron has embraced the team concept in track and field despite it being a grouping of individual events.  A single point can make a huge difference...please read.http://www.gozips.com/sports/track/2016-17/releases/20170515o6eaaq..

1. Wagon Wheel competitive advantage

2. Helps athletic department budget

3. Helps Title IX compliance

4. Frees up Jackson Field real estate and eliminates need for additional expenditures on baseball facilities

5. Avoids NEO early spring climate-related disadvantage in the sport

6. Avoids competition with Akron's popular minor league team for local baseball spectator interest

off the top of my head... (with all due respect to the players and coaches who have played/coached here)

Not a bad weekend in Lexington for the Zips tracksters...tried to keep up with them on-line over the past few days.  Phil Jaggers goes to Eugene fin discus or the Finals for the third time, but he's had a habit of letting his big brother from Kent edge him out in head-to-heads.  Cody Stine, who was invisible the past few weeks surprised and is going back to Oregon as well, in the high jump.  Matt Ludwig goes in Pole Vault as a favorite, I wold think, and Terrell McClain will be long jumping at Nationals.  Jackie Siefring was already in as a Hep competitor and Nikki Manson will be in as a high jumper.  Six Zips...not bad, but not where they were the past few years.  Still...six Zips at the Nationals is pretty damn good!

YES!!!  We have another Gold Medalist in Track and Field!  Matt Ludwig just won the NCAA Pole Vault with a jump of 18' 4 and 1/2 inch!!!!  Hit the third and final jump at the height, beating a Cinci Bearcat.  He's trying now at 18 - 10 1/2 but it doesn't matter.

ZACH - you beat me to the punch!!!

And Terrell McLain just finished 4th in the Long Jump, with two of his best jumps coming in the final 3, he jumped 2 feet better in the last two jumps!!

Wow great news! does anyone know what the Zips record is for points scored in an NCAA championship meet?

Outdoors - From 1970 through 1999 we only scored on the men's side once - 1982 - and we had 2 points that season.

We scored 2 points again in 2000 (64th), then didn't score again until 2005 when we got 5.5 points (45th).  We had 4 points in 2006 (46th), missed out in 2007, then had 2 points in 2008 (67th).  Zero for 2009.  3 points in 2010 (55th), 2 in 2011 (58th), and Z for Zero in 2012.  In 2013 we scored 6 points (38th), 11 points in 2014 (20th), 16 in 2015 (12th!) and 10 last year (23rd).  So long answer to your question - I believe the team record is 16 points.

With Matt's win and Terrell's 4th we pick up 15 points, and we have Cody Stine in High Jump and Phil Jagers in Discus yet to compete on Friday.  Cody could surprise, but Phil should score, if he ever gets over the stage fright he seems to get in big-time events.  Of stops looking over his shoulder at his Big Brother Reggie at the hated Kent-State-Still-Sucks.....

Tough night for Zip men.  Stine no heights at first bar in high jump and Phil Jagers again under-performs on big stage.  Not taking anything from these guys, great athltes and they made it to the Nationals, but thought we'd see scoring from both...

UPDATE - Jackie Siefring in solid 8th out of 24 after 4 events in Heptathalon...3 events tomorrow.

Fantastic finishes by our two Zip women.  Jackie Siefring finishes 5th in the Heptathalon and Nikki Manson finished 5th in the high jump.  Fantastic!  Two All Americans on both sides - McClain and Ludwig for the guys and Manson and Siefring for the women.  4 first team All Americans!

Good showing for the Zips, and proud of all 6 that made the trip.

Well that didn't go well.  Clayton tried both 800 and 1500 at U.S. Nationals, qualified for both finals, hurt himself in the 1,500 finishing last, and scratched in the 800 finals. No London for the zips, current or former, unless Barber goes for Canada.  Sorry for Clayton, he's beendoingso well this outdoor season...

I don't fault him for going for the gusto. Hopefully his injury is not serious.

Totally agree...funny, I was disappointed he didn't try the double in the O Trials, but this shows what can happen.  Wish the schedule would have had the 8s first....or 1 less heat.
