mrelegazna
...what the single game Rubber Bowl attendance record is for a Zips game (i.e., not counting Cleveland Browns exhibitions?) Couldn't find it in the media guide.
Balki Bartokomous
237 people. Akron still hopes to top that some day.
akronad
33,000 plus!
Zipmeister
I was there when Akron played Tampa back in the 70s and attendance was reported at over 40,000, and this number was NOT inflated. The fire marshall would have had a heart attack if he had been there. There was not a hint of an aisle anywhere in the Rubber Bowl.
you am i
i googled "rubber bowl" and "attendance record" and found this entry on the vandelaysports.com site: "the largest rubber bowl crowd was 43,171 versus butler in 1971." butler! must have been the acme-zip game. The Acme-Zip game tickets were not BOGO's. Acme originally sold the game tickets at the store for fifity cents each, then a little later (in the 70's) the game tickets were sold for $1. The price was deeply discounted and the attendance after the Acme-Zip game dropped off very dramatically, but that game did put 30-40 thousand butts in the seats. You could take a family of five to see a footaball game, park, and feed them for less than $15.00, and the shows were great. It wasn't all fun though, the "fans" never seemed to be interested in the game and you were always dodging soft drinks thrown by some kid whose parent was elsewhere. I remember an awful lot of cops for crowd control but they never seemed to be interested in controlling the crowd.
Buckzip
The Acme-Zip games always had in the mid to upper 30's or even into the 40's.

There were more than 44 thousand in the stands. I remember walking through the back of the end zone to get to the far stands while the Giants were warming up. I walked within five feet of DB Spider Lockhart, and believe it or not I was almost the same height as the all-pro Spider. I'm sure I was no more than 5-4 then (14 y.o.?).My cousin later married the Giants backup QB from that game, Tom Kennedy. I'm trying to remember their starter, was it Norm Sneed? The only play I remember was Don Cockroft throwing about a thirty yard pass on fourth down for a first that led to a TD. Amazing that I remember that much! What's my daughter's birthday again? Uh-Oh! November 11th!
