Z.I.P.
For the throng of one Zip who showed for our weekly meeting at Eastside Grill on University Avenue in Honolulu, the show we watched on ESPN-U was not one to share with recruits or non-Akron fans (the other 800 thousand + on O'ahu). There were a dozen or so waiting for the UL-Rutgers game to start, and they had no other sports to watch but the Zips vs the Bulls. First the good news. David Harvey is as good a freshman WR as you will find anywhere in America. Getsy seems to be capable against crummy defenses -- hurray at least for that. AND Buffalo lost that gawdawful whale, cloud, or whatever used to be on the side of their helmets -- replaced with a simple UB. They still have perhaps the worst unis in Div 1, though. Now for the sad truth. Twice in the third quarter the camera panned the stands! Gasp! Our athletic director must put a clause in all future contracts with ESPN (and all other broadcasters) that that is strictly forbidden at the Rubber Bowl. Mygawd, what an unprecedented embarassment! And I'm not talking so much about the fact that no more than a couple thousand people came out on a 65 degree November evening. The worst part was seeing the dilapidated condition of the stands. One local guy was looking at the screen at the time, and said to me "Man, your stadium looks like its about to collapse! Are the bleachers gnawed through by the rats, or what?"Please, Mr AD, get us a real stadium. That place is a laughing stock.
GoZips
Hawai'ian Z.I.P. .... what the ESPN-U cameras probably failed to capture in the third quarter was the dollar beer night being held just outside the open end of the Rubbercrock pot. Hundreds of fans occasionally looked through the iron gates at a gamealready in blow out status at 24-10.To further reduce the fans in the stands, at the other open end gate were hundreds ofloyal Zips supporters (i.e. that had contributed money to the cause) were having a FREEbeer night. Like the kids at the other side, they too, were occasionally watching thegame.Add in the hundreds milling around shopping for food, drink and exceptionally low costZips gear. One old geezer even finally picked up his two Fear the Roo blankets whilehis charming old lady date was scrounging used Fear the Roo beer cups. Have toadmit that they are nice enough that I took two home (the ones I swilled in the VarsityA club room).Twenty-four to ten might not sound like a blow out, but, given the Bulls inability to movethe ball the two touchdown gap was huge. So they picked up a TD at the end of the game against the younger kids. Big deal. How about Carlton Jackson's seventy yard strike? What a throw. The future looksbright. Yeah, yeah, we only got fifteen yards out of the play because the Bulls playerdid a fine job of pass interference.Check out the Friday sports section of our favorite newspaper. One of the best photosever to grace an aBJ (small letter "a" deliberate) sports section. Three Zips riding piggyback on the Bulls often sacked QB. A picture worthy of framing.Hey, what's this note in Pluto's game article about Mack Rhoades trying to change the 2007 football schedule? We have three confirmed games (@ the Suckeyes, INDIANA,and @Army) that I'd like to keep. That leaves one OOC game. Get us a home datethe week before the over confidents. Get darn near anyone. Get a Div II-A if nothingelse. Set the kids up with a game under their belt prior to the Columbus game.Hey, Brudda, I may be coming out for a month next Spring. Got a long term gig inDetroit. Yep, coming out of retirement. Never had a six figure salary before. Got todo it. Wanna free kat?p.s. ... Did ya catch the UAB-UTEP game on ESPN-2 last night? All 800 fans basking in the warm kleegle lights. Now, that's embarrassment on national TV.
Captain Kangaroo
I watched a little bit of the game tape today. Did you notice the Zips trainer with the buzz cut that the announcers kept panning to, telling people it was Charlie Frye?
Wally B
Embarrassing????? 1) This was not a Thurday night game of undefeateds' #3 and #15.2) Those weren't Jordans Bulls.3) Did u see Utep vs UAB friday night??? On ESPN2???? A huge empty stadium even w/ the endzone blocked off. Birmingham attracted more fans to their XFL games 4) Percent capacity for 2006 prior to this week: Akron 53.8%, UAB 30.9%.It is what it is, but remeber the Faust era when 2,000/game was the norm. It will ALL take time to build.
gozips19
good one capt. i watched the game on replay yesterday and got a good laugh on that one. also how about the play by play guy correcting himself on lindsey's touchdown chatch with about 4 mins. to go in the game. and don't even get me started on the color guy calling us ak-Ron over and over again. i will give espn some credit as there wasn't a whole bunch of shots to show the total crowd. most of the stills were of the student sections who rep'd the university well! even if no one was there for the game it was on t.v. and that's a step in the right direction. j.d. can tell incoming recruits that 5 games were on national television this year and that's huge!
