Cleveland ignores Akron as a whole unless there is a controversy or a murder. They ignore Akron sports because they are a pro market. They have the Browns, Cavs, and Indians. The only college important to them is OSU. Not that this is a bad thing, though. As a resident of Akron, I usually ignore Cleveland (except for their sports). It is sort of a mutual non-acknowledgment. It is very difficult to explain to someone who does not live in Akron. I can try to sum it up as: Cleveland views Akron as a far-away suburb that tries to steal it's glory. Akronites resent that, and ignore Cleveland whenever possible. The only problem is that Akron-Canton doesn't form it's own news market (although it probably should), and so we settle for their news, even though we never get reported on.

If you have media in YOUNGSTOWN that report on YOUNGSTOWN State, then the Penguins are light years ahead of the Zips.To add to the discussion above, The Canton Repository seems to despise anything remotely associated with Akron (I think it has to do with lingering bitterness over Canal Park and the relocation of the Canton-Akron Indians to downtown.) So, even though the Beacon covers Stark County, I don't know if we can ever count on Repository readers being at all well-informed of Akron athletics. But, know what?! I can't blame the Repository. They shake their money-maker, which is focussing on McKinley athletics and pimping McKinley athletics to their largely (let's just be honest) flannel-collared, small-town-yokel audience, as the entertainment choice of kings! You can't blame the Rep for being what it is; Small-time. But It's the AKRON Beacon that frustrates me!!!

I live where the Repository and the Beacon both try to gain readers. I'll tell you this. Most people here are clueless as shit about Akron. Everyone in Canton assumes that Akron is nothing more than some ghetto that offers nothing. Don't worry about people in Canton. They are too retarded to try to gain as Akron supporters. They would rather sit at home and bitch about "them there damned liberal college kids"

There actually 6 TV stations in youngstown. 21 NBC, 27 CBS, 33 ABC, 62 fox, and a WB station plus some new cray called MY TV. All of those TV stations cover YSU front and back. All thier sports is by YSU. As far as Radio we have a few big stations they all have sports that cover YSU. Can you belive that YSU has a radio contract, radio sations actually pay to put YSU sports on the air. The TV stations also bid on contracts to air the football games and air the coaches show. Theres wayyy too much coverage of YSU :wall::wall::wall: I wish I could get some akron coverage

I'm sure the Tressel years are the basis for that. How is it that Akron is larger than Youngstown and we have zero TV stations? And I realized something a few weeks ago... there isn't a city in the entire state of WV that is larger than even Cuyahoga Falls! (obviously no pro sports there, but still...)

Simple...our proximity to Cleveland.Until 1996, remember Akron did have a ABC affiliate, channel 23, and even after the PAX change, it ran local news until about a year or two ago, when the NBC deal ended (The news is produced by Channel 3-now runs on Cable 23). It has long been speculated that if a second station were to to have set up shop after 23 did, Akron-Canton would have made it's own television market over time, because there are some cities/towns (Mansfield, Carrollton, Alliance, etc.) that have trouble getting Cleveland stations. In fact, Canton's 67 also ran local news too...anyone remember this? And get this...If you think Y-Town having a full market is crazy...Lima Oh, has affiliates For NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox (the ABC one lauched this year)BTW, for the old-timers, how was 23's coverage on Zips Sports back then? I honestly feel that if we still had a BROADCAST television nightly news focusing on Akron, The ABJ would shape up its local coverage.

Youngstown is a pretty big market. It's actually the Mahoning and Shanango Valley. Trumbull, Mahoning counties, and a couple of counties in PA make up the market. They cover YSU football non stop here in the news papers and TV. We have 6 of them here and its like enough is enough. The NBC station and WB station both air YSU football games and the coaches show at the same time. Sometimes too much is too much, its a 1-AA program. I have to suffer through it becuase my wife is a YSU alum. :puke: YSU

Watch Eric Mansfield weeknights at 6:30 & 10 p.m. on Time Warner Cable 23Akron Canton 23I really never have watched.
The Akron-Canton News is now on cable only, not broadcast TV. Urbanpreppie's correct that in the past things might have worked out to make Akron-Canton its own TV market, but according to the FCC (who identifies markets because of rules dealing with ownership of stations in the same market, etc.) Akron is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton market. Back when channel 23 was an ABC station, WEWS constantly lobbied ABC to drop affiliation with WAKC (WAKR) since it was siphoning ABC viewers. If there were only a couple more Akron-Canton TV stations, it could have become its own market with a set of network affiliates. That opportunity's passed now...Btw, when ABC releases regional college football coverage maps, they still show WAKC Akron.....10 years after the station dropped ABC affiliation!

As a Zip alum (1981 Mass Media: Communications) who worked in Cleveland radio and TV for almost 20 years, this forum strikes a nerve.First of all, Akron is in a very unique and unfortunate position when it comes to media markets. It is simply too close to Cleveland. WAKR-TV was an abc affiliate because back in the 50's when abc (the old NBC blue network) began, they were grabbing affiliates anywhere they could find them. Thus the overlap with Channel 5.To answer the one post, yes, Channl 23 covered the Zips rather well back in the day when they had anchors such as Dick Russ, Mark Williamson, Len Rome and Carl Dickens. Carl Dickens was news director, sports anchor and called Zips play by play on WAKR radio.Cleveland TV does not cover Akron, or Can't sports for that matter, because they feel the interest is not there. High school sports receive more coverage than the Zips or flushes. The only way to combat this is to have a winning program with bowl appearances and NCAA tourney runs year after year until some type of community buzz is created. What riles me is the coverage they give CSU basketball...still on the coat tails of Kevin Mackey and the run they had back in the late 80's.The news coverage received is a reflection of the attendance. I guarentee if the Bowl was filled every week, the news coverage would follow. You can't compare Akron with Youngstown when it comes to media markets.Youngstown is market number 103, Cleveland/Akron is 17.I've always said that if Akron were geographically located where Canton is, it would have it's own TV market...much like Dayton (which Akron is bigger than) in relation to Cincinnati.I personally used to preach Akron athletics to the sports guys at Channel 8...usually getting a  in return. The only way we'll get more coverage is to win, win, win...and then we'll only get so much more coverage....unfortunately that's the way it is.Go Zips and :screwks:

Um, media market sizes aside, hasnt YSU won the DIV II title multiple times?  Didnt Tressel coach there?  Don't think market size has much to do with it.  Think success and history does.
Market size is relevent only in the sense that Youngstown doesn't have any pro sports, therefore can spend more time on YSU. The Penguins are their local team. But you are right...winning creates a buzz and buzz creates coverage.

That's not true, Youngstown has 2 pro Hockey teams, a pro baseball team and is getting a ALF2 football team. So thats not 100% true, plus highschool football
I know all that and you are nit picking and besides, all this is off the original topic of why Cleveland stations don't cover UA and Can't.All of the Youngstown teams, pro or otherwise, are Youngstown's. Their TV stations will cover themAkron and Can't, although in the Cleveland ADI (are of dominate influence), are not Cleveland's...thus, the coverage or interest isn't the same.A Youngstown/Cleveland comparision on this is just not apples to apples.
