Today's ABJ Business Section (D) front page

Recommended Posts

Anyone else appalled by the 2 pictures on the front of today's ABJ Business Section (section D)? Nice article...bad choice of apparel! :wall: I may be making more of this than I should, but here is a copy of the e-mail that I sent to the Dean of the UA College of Engineering today:Dear Dr. Haritos,First of all, let me say that I wish the UA Challenge X Team success in its latest endeavor. However, in my opinion, the two pictures on the front page of today’s Business Section (Section D) of the Akron Beacon Journal are a slap in the face to the University of Akron. As an Engineering Alumnus, I respectfully request that the UA College of Engineering adopt a policy whereby engineering students competing for and representing the University of Akron not be allowed to wear clothing of other universities during media interviews. Although I am an Ohio State sports fan, it is unacceptable to me that a member of a UA competitive team, Challenge X in this case, be allowed to have his picture taken for publication of a UA-related news article wearing apparel of another university. You would never see newspaper pictures of Romeo Travis, Dru Joyce, or Nick Dials wearing another university’s uniform. The University of Akron College of Engineering is an outstanding institution as has been proven time and again by the numerous competitions won by UA engineering students/teams. FEAR THE ROO applies to more than just athletics! Obviously these students have chosen UA because of its outstanding engineering programs. They should be proud to promote and represent the university they attend and represent. Please remind your students that UA is what all of us choose to make of it and that they should be proud to represent it well. After all, their diplomas will say “University of Akron”, not “Ohio State”.

Do you think members of the Ohio State team (if they have one) are wearing Zips gear?ME87, where you around for when the Engineers blocked up "The Rock" in front of Old Knight Hall?

I must admit, I don't remember that. Do you remember exactly when it was? With my Co-op jobs, i was at UA a semester, then out of state a semester...off and on.The thing that really irks me about those ABJ pictures is that I would love to show that article to colleagues of mine and tell them how great UA Engineering is. But, the first thing they'll do is say 'If it's so great, why the Ohio State shirt?"

I'm surprised that the news photographer didn't suggest that taking a picture of a UA student, at a UA engineering contest might not look right in the newpaper if they are wearing a Suckeyes shirt....and give him the option to change his apparel. Also....people usually know in advance that they might have a press opportunity at an event, and should dress appropriately to represent the school. Or, as some suggested, at least wear some type of business attire.

Everyone should let Dean George Haritos ... haritos@uakron.edu ... and the advisor Iqbal Husain ... ihusain@uakron.edu ... how they feel about those pictures. Obviousily the College of Engineering students prefer the education they get at Akron over what they would receive in Columbus. They should let the news media know that.

Sorry Skip-Zip. I didn't mean to give the impression that it was at an actual competition event. The pictures were taken in Auburn Science Center where they are working on the Challenge X car. The article was discussing UA's participation. I'd post the Ohio.com link here, but the pictures aren't included in the online version (Thank goodness!) I don't think the engineering students would wear anything other than plain street clothes, business attire, or UA stuff to an actual competition. But, your point is still valid...that I'm sure they knew the ABJ was coming to do this article. And it just doesn't look good to have an Ohio State shirt on while discussing UA's participation in Challenge X.Now I'll stop ranting...I just needed to vent to others who share my frustration.

As a fellow engineering student at the U, I have to agree that they need to get that crap off when representing the University. Their degree will say The University of Akron; not The Ohio State University. People just don't get it. The better Akron does, the better my degree looks and the more recognition we all get here. If everybody would jump on board this place would be formidable. If I were a member of challenge-X, I would definitely have called him out on that.

Stuff like this is why I started to hate OSU. I rooted for OSU growing up and during my freshman year at Akron. When I started getting into Akron's sports, I noticed that attendance was usually low and that not a whole lot of people in this city support the University of Akron athletics. I wondered why and it didn't take long to realize that people around here would rather root for a team in Columbus because of it's winning history over a team in their own backyard. Go to Summit Mall and you'll see a Buckeye Team Shop. Seeing all the attention Columbus was getting from this area and the lack of attention the University of Akron gets, I began rooting against OSU. I hope that if OSU loses more often while Akron starts winning, the attitudes in this city will change. Akron's School of Accountancy is superior to Ohio State's so it's something I take pride in. I really hope we beat OSU in football next season. The sad thing is, there will probably be more people in this area rooting for OSU during that game. Here's my question to all the OSU backers.1. If OSU has 2 or 3 losing seasons (finish 50% or below), will people in this area still favor them over a winning UA program (80% or better)?2. If answered no to question 1, will it have a positive effect on UA's attendance, atmosphere, popularity, and hype in this area?3. If answered yes to question 2, If OSU losing is a positive for UAkron, should Akron fans root against OSU?I know SGM rants about OSU this and that, Akron needs to win this and that, But no matter how much Akron wins, People in this area will continue to favor a winning OSU program more. It's not that hard to understand. No matter how much Akron wins, they'll still be 2nd class to people in this area when compared to a winning OSU program.

bobbyake. Yes, fans would drift towards Akron if Akron was ever in a better position on the national stage as Ohio State. Did you read my post after the national championship game about the news story stating that there were thousands of people at OSU to send the players off to the national championship game, but only TWO people standing there to welcome them back? The Suckeyes have the fan base that they do because they have a chance to win national championships.

I sent Dean Haritos an e-mail expressing my "disappointment" and this is a portion of his reply (after he got through extolling the vitues of the Engineering Dept.):"Our new student coordinator has been working very hard to organize outreach programs and had the best of intentions when she contacted the Akron Beacon Journal to do a story. She is now aware that she should notify a faculty team advisor and the public relations office when media contact is made. This has been a learning experience for her. In the past, our Challenge X students have worn Challenge X T-shirts or other UA apparel when participating in a media story, and we will continue to encourage the students to do so for all future media contacts. Technically, we cannot insist that they wear UA apparel, but this has never been a problem. This last incident was just an oversight by the students, who were wearing warm and comfortable clothing while they were working on the car."I don't know if I am satisfied with his reply, but he did promptly reply to my e-mail.

At least this guy responds to e-mails, unlike some other people and departments at UA.

I'm thrilled that he replied to the email! That shows respect, class and concern.
