LosAngelesZipFan
Under current assumptions is the stadium ready for the the '09 or '10 season?Does anyone know if efforts are underway to secure an incredible home schedule that season (such as bringing in Ohio State and other BCS teams?). Granted, securing OSU would be a long shot but there has to be way...probably involving a very large guarantee...but regardless, we need to put together a home schedule that changes perceptions and gives real reason for consideration by NEOhio college football fans. Also, would still love to get a West Coast game in the next few years. Toledo has somehow secured a home and home with Arizona.
skip-zip
The last I heard, the goal is to have the stadium finished for the '09 home opener against Kentucky.Getting Ohio State to play a road game in Akron is.......a 0% possibility. But we'd have an SEC team. Not bad.
Dr Z
I had a nightmare once. (insert dream sequence music here)Zips finally got a new stadium and played the Suckeyes to open up the stadium. There were three quarters bandwagon non alumni Columbus State fans in attendance. A bunch of red and scarlet throughout the stadium. The Zips won and the Columbus State fans in Suckeye tradition burned down our new stadium and turned cars over on Exchange.(I woke up in a cold sweat)I'll take Kentucky. Oh man. If you didn't say that was a dream, I would say that has a very good possibility of happenning if we ever play OSU here. Good thing they don't have the cajones to play non-BCS teams on the road, instead of leaving the comfort of their own stadium.
LosAngelesZipFan
I raise the Ohio State possibility because they played at Cincinnati a few seasons ago and are playing Toledo in Cleveland in 2 years so they have demonstrated a willingness to play non-BSC Ohio teams, out of Cowlumbus, if the price is right. Tressel is an alum, its a special occassion, and with the right guarantee, it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility, though highly unlikely. Maybe they could honor Jim Dennison which could be a little extra motivation for Tressel because they are close. Clearly there would have to be a real guarantee for them (won't they make around $500K on the Cleveland game?) and a ton of political and relationship arm twisting to have any chance of pulling something like that off. I disgree on the nightmare scenario-- I think there would be a groundswell of support for the Zips, which is precisely the reason to do it. Remember when Huggins' Zips played at Ohio State and led at the half? The score was announced at the Coliseum during a Cavs game and the crowd went wild. Given the mutual antipathy of Cleveland and Cowlumbus, I still think that Ohio State's fan base in NEO is (incredibly) wide but shallow. My point is that there has to be a concentrated effort at disrupting the default thinking of NEOhio football fans-- something that really shakes up the mental model and drives re-consideration. Winning consistently is price of entry-- we need the right home schedule, great marketing, and other elements to all work together. Kentucky alone isn't going to do it. We need something splashy and impressive that signals intended direction and confidence. BTW, is it at all realistic to have this project done by 2009? Anyone know anything about the ancillary development around the project that was mentioned in the video piece?
zip81
If you remember, Akron played OSU in '01, which was the first game for the refurbished Ohio Stadium. It was also Jim Tressel's first game as OSU coach. And I believe a young man named Charile Frye came in to play that game when the number 1 quarterback..forget his name...was injured.Hot, beautiful day...and we played pretty good that day.I couldn't believe how High Street has turned into a wasteland. We used to do road trips down there...and the nightlife was fantastic.Who could forget "Kegs and Eggs" at Papa Joe's the morning of a game? skip-zip
You're right. It was a sunny September day, and Charlie Frye played well. He relieved Nick Sparks, who later ended up being a pretty good receiver. I think the final score was only 28-14.
Dr Z
You mean the game John Fuller missed an easy pick to give OSU a TD?
Blue & Gold
You mean the game John Fuller missed an easy pick to give OSU a TD? Yep! Bounced right off his hands and into the hands of an OSU receiver who then took it the distance.
