zipboy
At least he feels like I do about the MAC. I was a big MAC guy until this weekend. This is a deadend league. What is the worst case if we go independent for football? There are not enough teams to get into bowls now. Would we miss great TV exposure? You mean no more Buffalo home games on Thursday night on ESPNU? I sure hope that we are putting some kind of a plan together. Nice interview Mike.I've always thought of Keith Dambrot as an Akron guy, and he is.But I've always assumed he'd coach the Zips for a long time, and that assumption got a little cloudier when I spoke with him today."I get frustrated," he said. "I can't say I won't get to the point where I wouldn't look (for another job). This is the biggest injustice I've ever been a part of."Dambrot said he plans to call each member of the NIT selection committee to ask why his team was not invited."I owe that to my team," he said.Dambrot also questioned Akron's membership in the MAC."The MAC hasn't used their brain," the coach said. "I've said before that I don't think the MAC is a good league for Akron."I asked him to name some better conferences to suit the Zips and he named Conference USA, the Big East and the Atlantic 10 (although the A10 doesn't have football). Maybe a monetary reward for the 26 wins? To think one lucky shot can lead to this mess.
RACER
i agree with zipboy. the university needs to do something. if it means joining another conference to b-ball,and go independant for football. i say do it. if not we will lose another coach just like we lost huggins.temple wanted in the mac for football let em have them. skip-zip
Wow. This discussion takes me back to my student days in the early 80's.First, it would not be a problem playing independent in football as long as we had conference affiliation for every other sport. Football only involves scheduling 10-12 opponents a year. It's trying to make up schedules for all of the other sports that causes a problem if you are indepedent, like we were back then.I know that people like Muse, Huggins, Faust, and Adams(AD) would have loved to get us into a conference like Conference USA (it was called the Metro back then), or the Big East because both were a geographical fit, and had city schools, much like our own. However, when that never happened, and we began to have problems operating as an independent, we joined the MAC.Now, I know there were people around Akron that wanted us in the MAC, but I was not one of them. I thought that the MAC would limit our potential for growth. But, I changed my mind over the years as the MAC started getting access to more bowl bids in football, and multiple NCAA b-ball tournament selections. But, that has changed. Darn near every 1-A football team with a winning record now gets a bowl bid, and the MAC hasn't gotten multiple NCAA b-ball bids in years. So, what's our benefit to being in the MAC now? God please don't let this happen for a second time.-Ken LollaI was harsh on Lolla when he left. I honestly felt he was only a year away from proving the Zips worth in the NCAA committee's eyes, much like Gonzaga or Butler has in hoops. I still feel that way, but not with the certainty I had before. Some will need to change institutionally for Dambrot to stay long term. Either the NCAA changes their post season policies, or the Zips move to another conference. If things stay status quo, I couldn't blame him for leaving one day. To me, the next 9 months will be very interesting. Does the NCAA do anything? Does the MAC do anything? Does Akron do anything. One of the three needs to act. RACER
we do not have to be independant in anything except football. with 12 games now we have a little bit more leverage in football scheduling as an independant.there are plenty of good b-ball conferences that would take akron for all sports except football. we really need to start looking at. i hope the administration is listing to kd. Let's give Caleb a year or two and we will be right back in the top 5 in the nation in my opinion. This is a sidenote and not relevant really to the topic at hand.... but at this point good news is much needed.
