MACReport

I want to commend everyone here for NOT BEING QUIET about this injustice.YOU ARE BEING HEARD......Just pick up today's Beacon Journal. A "teaser" to an article about us getting screwed is on the FRONT PAGE of the paper. Wow, imagine that, we finally get marquee coverage. The article itself is nice. It's at the top of the cover of the sports page. It contains quite a few facts, as well as comments from Dambrot and MAC officials.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK......THIS WILL NEVER CHANGE UNLESS WE ARE HEARD!!!

Boyages indicates that currently the MAC is in regular contact with the NCAA Tournament Selection committee. "We have a primary and secondary contact from the NCAA Selection Committee that is assigned to our conference," he explains. "We are in constant communication with them with conference calls, we update them personally and notify them of good wins or close losses to top teams and we encourage them to attend our games in person." That is my favorite part of the article. Sounds like they need to push these "primary and secondary contacts" a lot harder because whatever they are saying to them now obviously isn't working! :chair::chair:

I don't care if your primary contact is Chuck Norris and your secondary contact is Jack Baur, the selection committees were not going to put three MAC teams in the tournaments(s). They had to take the mac tourney winner into the big dance, and they had to put the reg-season winner in the NIT. Since those were not the same team, that meant that Akron, as much ass kicking as they did, were left holding the bag. No freakin way they were going to show the MAC 3 team love. No way.I mean, we were debating what would have happened if Toledo won the mac tourney, because it would mean that we would get pissed if we didn't get an At Large, and no one ever considered the possibility that 2 other teams might go (and by the rules, had to go). I'll bet we could have beat Nevada and still not got in under these circumstances. The selections are political. They sat their scratching their heads trying to figure which east coast team that was on the bubble they were going to bump, or which team with cinderalla following and media backing. Let me tell you, they didn't scratch their heads long. Akron? Sha!To use a current events pun, we don't have any seizmic influence on their scales. You can complain all you want. You can even get the local papers to complain. It wont help.We can't raise a stink like Syracuse, and even they got fuxxored.Fear the roo? We are not feared. We are not even background blips on the radar.

...and that's what needs to change. I for one am SICK of the people in these committees and sadly, many of our citizens that think the only frickin' university in ohio is OSU. (This is, in NO means a bash at OSU).It's time for us mid-major schools to stand up to the good old boys...and seeing this press might just help. And by the way, it's spelled seismic. :-)

This is a quote from boyages in the report:As for the complaint that MAC referees are not up to par, Boyages adds that "there is no such thing as a MAC official. All the referees are independent contractors. We use the same officials who work games for the Big East, Big Ten and other conferences. Our director of officials, Sam Lickliter, does a tremendous job and we work together to evaluate the officials after every game with the support of observers. We assess their performance in the offseason as well." So why doesn't the MAC, or other conferences, have their own dedicated officials? Boyages explains, "It really comes down to the cost of insurance. Only the largest conferences would be able to afford hiring their own officials and even they shy away because of the cost." if this is true, then how can dambrot say that when nevada came to play at our place, they brought "their" officials, because nevada isnt in one of the "big" conferences.PS. I went over and corrected my mistakes before i sent this, dont want some certain MAC official coming to the board, reading it and sending me more nasty and rude emails.

Each conference has officials that are affiliated with one or more conferences, and are as Rick B. pointed out perfectly as independent contractors. An official can work for more than one league -- MAC, Horizon, Mid-Con, Big Ten, etc. -- but aren't employees of the conference So, when coach Dambrot said that Nevada had their own officials, they in essence had officials that are assigned by their conference office. It's the same way game contracts are handled in football.I think it's now time to start focusing on other things and not bashing the league, or the officials or whatever. The fact of the matter is that Miami won and there's nothing that can be done about it. The brackets are out and it's time to watch as the 'Road to Atlanta' develops. If Akron makes one free throw at the end or doesn't blow a late, big lead, it's over and everyone on this message board would be complaining that Akron got an 11, 12 or 13 seed in the NCAAs. The league has come a very long way since the 1980s and 90s, yet is still facing some troubling times when schools can't draw for football and even basketball!Yes, the Zips didn't make postseason play but you can also blame the fact that there were upsets along the way in conference tournaments that played a factor in NCAA and NIT selections. Toledo, as regular season champs, were destined to go to the NIT since they didn't win the conference tourney (one of 8 auto qualifiers that didn't win their league tournament). NC State, as a No. 10 seed in the ACC, played its way into the NIT by advancing to the finals. Syracuse got the shaft and so did Drexel, just to name a few. By making the NIT smaller by eight slots, it hurt the chances of a school like Akron of getting an at-large bid to the NIT.What it comes down to is that Akron and other schools in the MAC have to fight like hell to find a way for the big boys to play them. It's the same fight that the league has in football. The unfortunate thing is that no one wants to play MAC schools. Find a way to get a message to the AD, coach and even the president that the school needs to beef up its basketball schedule and there is a price to pay to do it! In the end, stop playing teams like Tiffin and develop scheduling relationships with leagues like the Horizon (some), the Valley, the Big Ten, Colonial or the ACC. Scheduling games with many of these schools and winning, whether its home, away or neutral will go a long way in helping the overall RPI -- and especially the non-conference RPI.Finally, stop whining and bitching about wanting to leave the MAC and go elsewhere, like Conference USA. It's not gonna happen! Look at the fact that Miami and Toledo, among others, were courted years ago and declined. And that was before the league imploded and the big guns went to the Big East. Marshall is buried in that league and hasn't been competitive since it left the MAC. The only big basketball team, realistically, is Memphis.Think of the positives and all of the good that has come of Akron basketball in the last couple of years. That's my two cents!!MACFan

This is an unjustice! The same kind of injustice I feel seeing how UA officials and the student body literally STOLE the title "A.K. Rowdy" from our music group. I'm not here to stir up any trouble but come on??? If we're going to talk about fairness and unfairness lets' keep it basic. What goes around comes around. I feel really bad for Romeo, Jeremiah, and the gang but.......I couldn't believe it when someone called me and told me that AU was using "A.K. Rowdy" without at least accrediting the ones who started created it. Unjustice???.....I wouldn't be shocked if the mods didn't allow this post cause they know it's an injustice too....

MACfan and others should be GLAD this happened to Akron. It uncovered more dirt and disfunction about the NCAA, NIT and the MAC than anyone knew of. Sure, many of us suspected much, but the beast was unveiled this past weekend. Now that it's out, it's not about 6.6 seconds. There is much more to this story.....

LMAO, how can UA and its student body complain about being robbed when you guys stole the title "A.K. Rowdy" from an local group named V.E.C. without acknowledging them or compensating them? I'm an original member of the group (D-Mizery) and I could believe what I was hearing when a friend of mine told me how UA had named their cheering section the "A.K. Rowdies" without at LEAST acknowledging the ones who made it. Imagine how I felt! If you didn't then you do now. Robbed???? That's soooo funny!

Hello all, my name is Damon and I'm originally from Akron. Akron U. should be the last University talking about robbing someone! I used to be in a band called V.E.C. (1997-2003). We had this song named "A.K. Rowdy" and it was hot in 2000. 88wzip gave us alot of love, but at the same time their DJ's were bashing our song. I moved to nashville in 03'. A friend of mine who attends the U of A called me and told me how THE U OF A and its student body started using the title "A.K. Rowdy" without asking for our permission or AT LEAST ACKNOWLEDGING the group. I'm not one of these petty people out here who'll sue for anything, but at the same time if I come up with something acknowledge it.How would you feel if you worked your butt off doing something that you loved and someone else used it without acknowledging it?Now if any of you understand the copyright laws then you know that one can't copyright a "Slogan". We copyright the SONG "A.K. Rowdy" under the name of our album, which was "The Ghetto don't luv nobody". Since it's not copyrighted under a title then it's free game. Hey we were young and didn't really comprehend that at the time, but for christ sake if you're gonna steal something as a fan section at least accredit the group who created it.AKRON UNIVERSITY NOW UNDERSTANDS HOW I FELT FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS!

Balki...FearTheRoo.......excellent. My thoughts exactly.Who knows how many years we would have put up with this crap, and how many more times we'd get screwed before we really got around to doing something about it?This joker says the MAC has come a long way. WHAT??? Only ONE NCAA tournament bid for the last EIGHT YEARS STRAIGHT. You act like we should be bowing or something  , because we feel honored to be a part of one of the nation's great sports leagues. Give me a break...the only reason Akron got into the MAC is to get conference affiliation with a league that made sense geographically. But the problems over the years with scheduling, officials, etc., just keep getting worse. You want my opinion? Since we are one of the "newer" members of the MAC, we don't get quite the same treatment in a number of different areas.Would you want to stay?

As a Zip going back to the 70's and a tradionalist, I say stay in the MAC. The fan in me says, "GET THE HELL OUT OF THE MAC!!!!!!!"Two of the main reasons we got out of the OVC (1 bid) was the travel and the expenses to travel. If we want to get into another league, fine. However, we are going to have to find a way to fund the programs. Do we want to be like other universities that have recently dropped programs because their budgets could not afford them?I would say our university fathers have some hard decisons to make.
