akronad
If this has been posted, sorry.KD met with Can't State's Laing Kennedy yesterday. Keith wanted some answers. B/4 those horrible 6.6 seconds, the NCAA committee was ready to seed akron as a #10. So, what H_ll happened for us not only not make the NCAA but the NIT as well.Nothing but 6.6 seconds. It still hurts today.I can only imagine how tough it is for the players even today. ZachTheZip
I'll tell you excectly why we weren't invited. The old farts on the NIT selection committee said they chose the at-large NIT bids by going through the list of candidates and choosing the teams they would least like to coach against. It was an entirely subjective process and anybody who coaches can tell you that you can't make that decision unless you see the teams in person. I am sure that they didn't see all the teams, and judged primarily on name recognition. What a load of bull. I bet they think Akron is still a D-II school. The NCAA is a non-profit organisation, but it would seem like they chose the big schools with the most money for the NIT. If that is the case, then the NCAA should have it's non-profit status stripped.
Zips fan
Is this heresay or is written somewhere that we would have been a 10 seed. I would have been very happy with the 10 seed.

I had a friend tell me that he heard laing on the radio saying that the committee had akron penciled into a "very respectable seed" before the loss to miami. So we went from being a very respectable seed to not even being in the NIT by virtue of a clock operator's screwup, a conference that's too cheap to get timing operated by the officials on the court, and a miracle bank shot? It just makes no sense. It's more evidence that the NIT committee knew nothing about what they were doing. "What team would we least want to play against".....what a load of crap.Like uakronkid says, if the NCAA is selecting teams based on money, then it's time for them to have their nonprofit status stripped. They'd think twice about that, for sure.....
mcperp
The NIT committee does indeed base their selections subjectively, including perhaps ironically deciding to leave Akron out due to their connection to LeBron. Since high schoolers can no longer go straight to the NBA, the old farts, took it upon themselves to slap the most high profile of all "straight to the NBA" players by punishing his friends and hometown. Not saying that this was the only reason, but if these subjective decisions needed a "tipping point" then Lebron certainly provides that final dagger. timmyboy
A 10 seed, and we would be hearing our name as a team to look out for, cuz just like KD said, i know we can play with alot of the teams in the tourney. And had we got into the NIT, IMHO we would have won it all......... and the NIT committee doesnt want to see a "small" school like Akron winning it all, cuz that would make the high majors look bad! zipboy
What I don't get is how if we were "slated" to be a 10th seed we don't get in over another at large team. Weren't there more at large teams seeded worse than 10th?
Zipgrad1990
I find a 10 seed hard to believe. Since Miami got a 14 seed, I would think we would be more like a 12 or 13 seed. Its all moot now. Oh well at least

Oh well at least They did say that they would have akron as a 10 seed if they were to win the MAC Championship. The only reason miami got such a low seed is because their bad record. they were 15 and 14 in the regular season. They would have taken into consideration ( had we won the mac) that we beat Oral Roberts, Niagra who both got into the tourney.
BirdZip
Niagara is in the Play-in game (I hate that term). I don't know that that win would have got us much. This whole thing just makes me sick.

zip81
There is something wrong with a system when you go from a number 10 seed to nothing.
skip-zip
I'm with the people that aren't buying this....Several other at-large teams that were picked OVER us only got #12 seeds. So, how could we have been a #10 if they thought these teams were better than us?Plus, you'd also have to believe that we went from being a favorable #10 seed to not being invited AT ALL because we ended up being 26-7 instead of 27-6???This makes no sense. We did go from a "bubble" team to being not invited at all. It's not that hard to believe.Purdue is a 9 seed. They were a bubble team too, and are a 9. A 10 for us isn't that incredible considering they were anticipating 27 wins in that scenario. The NCAA selection/seeding versus NIT seeding is two issues. It's not unbelievable to me that the NCAA committee might have seeded us a 10, while the old fogies at the NIT decided that they wouldn't mind coaching their team against Akron, right after mixing up some Metamucil.
