blueandgold Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Did anyone see this in the Beacon today? Sounds promising!Dambrot will be taking the team to the Alaska tournament (Great Alaska Shootout I believe). Oregon State and Colorado State will be in it so far. We will play Temple at the JAR, and maybe Saint Louis Univ. Possible road games at Clemson, Mississippi State or a Big Ten school if we can fit into one of their schedules. Also it mentioned that he is more determined than ever to make it work here at Akron! sgm405 Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Quote of the article:``I believe in bouncing back,'' he said. ``Right after the NIT thing happened, I got a couple of calls from (coaching) friends who said I had to get out of Akron, because if you win 26 games and can't get an NIT bid, something is wrong.''So what did Dambrot think?``For a day or two, I probably felt like leaving,'' he said. ``But then I got over it. This has made me even more determined to make it work at Akron.'' Quote

blueandgold Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 I did some checking. According to www.goseawolves.com the teams participating in the Great Alaska Shootout in 2007 doesn't list Akron, not does it show Oregon State and Colorado State. Maybe a lot has changed since their list was put together. Here are the teams listed:Butler, Liberty, Gonzaga, Michigan, Texas Tech, Washington State, Western Kentucky and host UAA. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 There's another of those exempted pre-season tourneys in Alaska.Go HERE. Quote
blueandgold Posted March 21, 2007 Author Report Posted March 21, 2007 Thanks Zip Watcher. You found the corrent one! I think we need to be in the other one though. It has much better participants! And would give us much better exposure and competition. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 All in good time. The Top of the World is one which will get us one or 2 good RPI games and yet also be a completely winnable tournament for the Zips. Let's go after the Shootout when Ronnie & Jimmy & Steve have more games under their belts. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 "South Carolina Upstate?" I thought I had heard them all?! Overall, I like it. How many AK-Roadies will make the trip? Quote
BirdZip Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 Looks to me like a tournament where we bring home the trophy. Quote
w00t Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 How many AK-Roadies will make the trip?I can fit three people in my Mazda... and look, it's only 4,000 miles away (63 hours of continuous driving). Quote
w00t Posted March 21, 2007 Report Posted March 21, 2007 SC Upstate is making the transition to D-I next year in the A-Sun. We could potentially be their first game as a D-I program. Quote
mcperp Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 Wow, I thought SC Upstate was just a derisive term for Clemson by a Gamecock fan, but it actually exists! Must have been a lot of free Pabst Blue Ribbon at that marketing meeting. I like the tournament, we have a great shot at winning the whole thing. Oregon State had a rough year, and I think only Colo St and Portland State would be the other potential threats. Quote
UAZips Posted March 22, 2007 Report Posted March 22, 2007 I could very well be living in Nome again next year at that time. I'll put some Rowdies up at my place and we can all fly over to Fairbanks for the games. Seriously though, If I am living up there again, I'm definately making the trip over to Fairbanks for this!
