mcperp
Does anybody know what it might cost to put on a 4 team holiday tournament for hoops? Bring in one very good team that would actually come to Akron if price was right, one local team, and one other mid-major school. It would help beef up our usually "big name free" home schedule, and give us some recognition and maybe an RPI bump. We used to have these awhile back, though if during winter break many students might not be around to attend.Seems you'd be looking at $100 - $110k in appearance fees to get for example:So. Illinois, Youngstown St, and Middle Tennessee Butler, Robert Morris, and W. KentuckyXavier, Dayton, and Indiana State etc.Probably another 30-40K for other expenses. Just guesses...Sure would be nice if some corporate sponsor picked up most of the tab, and if it's a non-profit maybe even tax-deductible contributions by Zips fans. ziptrumpet87
I think something like that is more likely once we outgrow the JAR and build an 8-10k arena. It would be wonderful for the area economy also.
Kangaroo Craig
The University and Scott Wolstein need to join forces and build that domed Soccer/ Football/ Basketball stadium near the campus. Give Mr. Wolstein a few adjacent acres of land on exchange street to add his shopping complex and you may have a deal!
timmyboy
The University and Scott Wolstein need to join forces and build that domed Soccer/ Football/ Basketball stadium near the campus. Give Mr. Wolstein a few adjacent acres of land on exchange street to add his shopping complex and you may have a deal! we would run into alot of scheduling problems if that were to happen, so i dont see it even coming close to happening. And if our stadium turned out to be a dome, I'd turn in my season tickets. Then I'd vomit. Then I'd cry. Then I'd throw water balloons filled with my own blood and every preson responsible for selecting a domed structure. Then I'd hire a ninja to kick them in the nutsack . I'd go to bed and when I'd wake up I'd poke those same people in the eye with a sharp stick, sealing one of their eyes shut . I'd beat them with a folding chair, a la Ravishing Rick Rude and give them a "swirlly" in the toilet .I don't want a domed stadium.
Zip Watcher
what about shooting them with rubber bullets from 20 paces and then smashing their heads against the wall ... don't you think you're omitting some possibilities?

Big Zip
For the life of me -- I can't understand the hatred for domed stadiums. If the people of Cleveland wouldn't have this same problem the Indians would be playing at home today and they wouldn't have had four snow days. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the warmth of Ford Field for the MAC Championpship game and the Motor City Bow. But that's okay Cap'n I'm sure you would have much rather froze in the cold and snow. exexec
I am also for a doomed stadium. In addition to all of the obvious reasons-it could be used a lot more to gererate much more revenue. And lets face facts they could alwys use the extra $$$$$$$$$$$$!
skip-zip
I've been in favor of a dome for 25 years now. It would be a nice and unique type of facility that could really help our growth as a University, and a community. Especially if it has multiple uses.It also solves our problem of not having a facility large enough to have big basketball games. Which would also provide a solution to having to replace the JAR with a larger basketball arena.

I am completely against it if it involves wolstein having any part to do with it. If he does it would cause more scheduling conflicts then anything. if there were a way to find the money to build it within the university and not have to go to and outside group (such as wolstein) then id be a little bit more for it. it would help the problems of having to build a new basketball arean in another 10 years. Plus they could have concerts just as they did at the rubber bowl years ago. there are alot of good when it comes to building a domed stadium, but not if you have to find partners to help fund it such as wolstein
Captain Kangaroo
I am also for a doomed stadium. Freudian slip? I am against the domed stadium for the following reasons:1.) Cost - We're scraping to get money for an open-air facility. There's no way in hell we could afford the 2X to 2.5X multiplier you'd need to add on to get a dome. At least without selling our souls to the devil.2.) Asthetics - Domes are U-G-L-Y. Yeah, Ford Field is nice. But the Zips wouldn't get that. For what's in Mack Roades wallet we'd get some piece of crap dinner theater facility like Idaho . No thanks.3.) Basketball - The JAR is going on 25 years old. We've yet to outgrow it. I'm not too concerned we'll outgrow it any time soon. The existing building is fine, if it were gutted and re-done. The Zips will never need more than a 7k-8k arena for hoops. A cavernous dome with a curtain down the middle would suck for hoops.4.) Another practice facility? - We have the best practice facility around, with a full length indoor football field. Next to it...we're going to build another full length indoor field? It makes no sense. MAC schools just don't do things like that, and with good reason. 5.) Community use - If we get an outdoor field with Field Turf, an open-air facility can be used for soccer, HS football regular season and playoff games, concerts and other things. It would get plenty of use. I don't see an Akron dome out-bidding the existing Cleveland facilites for the stupid, ancillary stuff if it were open in the winter. It would be vacant.6.) Warmth - Forgive me, but I can handle watching football in the cold. I'm from Ohio. The Zips regular football season extends from late August to late November. The fall season from August-the end of October is typically flat-out awesome football weather. And, there's nothing worse than leaving a beautiful, 65 degree fall day to walk inside a sterile dome to watch a football game. Can November suck? Sometimes it does. Big deal...that's why God invented the flask. Ford Field makes sense for a pro team in Detroit because they need to be prepared to play games from August through late January (even though the Lions will never play in January, they still need to plan for it). The Zips regular season will NEVER reach December. And if the team is any good, dome-lovers will always be guaranteed two games in a dome as a reward anyhow (MACC and the MCB).Things look worse than they are regarding Zips football and the NE Ohio weather due to the retarded scheduling of the past couple years, and this upcoming season. I HOPE the new stadium affords us the opportunity to play the majority of our home games in Aug/Sept/Oct with some regularity. I hope...Did I mention I hate domes?
