Guest KAjunRaider Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 I've never been to Akron, even in our OVC days, so I need some info on your fine city. Need a couple of great places to eat---ones that support the University of Akron. I don't care about what type of food---I'll eat anything. I just want the best place overall. And I don't want a place that will cost me $40----I just wasted over $1,000 on an ill-fated trip to Tampa last weekend (we all know that our game was cancelled, but I was already in Florida when the announcement was made--was planning to drive over to Gainesville from Tampa) Would also like to know where is the best place to meet some Akron fans whilst partaking in a little tailgating. Best Akron night life is down town, near the Canal Park stadium. Lots of decent bars, resturaunts, etc. You can find just about anything you want there. It is only 3 blocks from the campus. Best place to tailgate is the lower bowl lot, down past the blimp hanger. Follow the signs once you exit Rt77 onto 224 (see your map). Entrance to the lot is on your left, BEFORE the traffic light. Tailgating begins early! I think they frown on kegs in the lot...other than that anything is fair game. Quote
Guest Guest_Zipper Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 Isn't this weekend all that Freedom Fest stuff? It's lucky for MTS that this is their game here. I think there's bands outside the bowl all day Saturday but you could probably check on gozips.com. Quote
Guest Guest_Zipper Posted September 9, 2004 Report Posted September 9, 2004 What the hell I'm on my way out the door but might as well help UAM out a little. Sounds like an all weekend event at the bowl: From gozips.com The countdown to kickoff of the home football season begins on Friday, Sept. 10, with a rib burn-off. Six teams from around the country will compete for best of awards in the categories of ribs and sauce as well as the "people's choice" and "hot sauce" trophies. The competition will run all three days, with an awards ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday. Following the rib tasting, UA Athletics will present a dual-headliner concert at 7 p.m., featuring Rare Earth and The Dave Matthews Cover Band. The cover band hails from Athens, Ga., and has received high marks for its unwavering reverence to the actual performance group. Rare Earth will entertain fans with classical rock tunes, having appeared on many high profile variety shows throughout the years. Saturday's pregame tailgate party, known as ZIPSfest, begins at 11 a.m., with a battle of the bands competition. Bands interested in participating should contact the UA Athletics External Relations Office at 330-972-7279. Following that competition at 2 p.m., area party band Mo Shambo will take the stage to perform hits from the 1960s and '70s. At 3:15 p.m., the legendary Otis Day & The Knights hit the ZIPSfest main stage. Known as "America's Favorite Party Band" and for its performance in the hit movie Animal House, the group will perform a wide range of music dating from the 1950s to the latest in R&B hits. At 5:15 p.m. the UA Alumni Association, with the help of the Zips spirit teams and marching band, will sponsor a pregame pep rally. The rally will conclude with the first-ever Zips Walk into the Rubber Bowl leading up to a patriotic pregame ceremony. The pregame event will include active and retired members of the U.S. military, with honorary captains being announced in the weeks leading up to the contest. Freedom Jam 2004 concludes on Sunday, Sept. 12, as Coors Light presents NFL football on giant video screens. Former NFL players will be on hand to mingle with fans and prizes will be given away. The rib-burn will wrap-up at 4 p.m. Quote
