Where do you point the finger for this? Who is responsible for helping these kids stay eligible? When does JD take responsibility for recruiting all of these kids who are not eligible to play -- some ever? It's been talked about plenty of times here -- his recruiting classes are great, but when it comes to seeing the field does his recruiting class still stack up? It's beginning to look a lot like they don't. How do the big schools keep these kids eligible. How do we make this happen? I've heard before we've got a horrible tutoring program that we should be ashamed of -- is this still the case?
it comes down to the athlete. no matter how much mandatory study table and tutoring you do, you can't make someone learn. they have to at the very least be open to it. you can't make someone go to class. yes you can punish them for skipping, but that's only holding them accountable for their actions and it won't change that f. even if you made sure they got their homework in on time the tutors can't take the test for them. there's only so much that can be done, and it's up to the athlete to do the work.

Everything written on here is pretty much fact. Johnny Long transfering (C-Ya)David Harvey his grades are not even close (C-Ya)Jermain Lindsey is in the same boat, no grades no play ( c-ya) please refer to the www.ncaaa.org web page for all eligibility facts. AS for coaches, where ever you go a coach wants to better his team. whether it be on the field or off. the fact is these kids coming in now, are too many problems off the field, that on the field is not even an option

A few people on here made a few good comments a couple of years ago - JD is a new coach and we are going to go through some growing pains. I kind of laughed at that during the MAC title run and after the NC State win. Those words are turning out to be prophetic for me. JDs 2nd and 3rd recruiting classes which were so highly ranked have lost a lot of kids. JD said as much this post season and about some character issues and lack of leadership hurting the team.Time will tell about the incoming class, but I feel and hope that we have learned from our previous mistakes. I am excited about the incoming class and expect these issues to start dwindling. Not that I am the biggest fan of Terry Pluto, but towards the end of the season he was being interviewed pregame by Bill Morgan and said something to the effect - JD is a smart guy who works very hard. He will figure out what he did wrong and correct it. I agree with that. Unfortunately, we are bearing the brunt of the prior 2 years now.I have also learned that a lot happens over the summer both good and bad. If players are gone, it is an opportunity for others to step up. Assuming that Harvey and Lindsey are gone, I see 2 big potential holes this year, DL and receiver. Everywhere else, I feel pretty good and look for the young OLine to surprise.

i don't think they'll move any running backs although you could see some packages with a wr. flanked out from time to time. if all three wide outs are truly gone then look for the three incoming frosh to step up. most people have talked about hill but royal has tons of speed and is over 6 ft. tall. gray pride is lightning quick and will give people fits in the slot. :screwks:

Rasor chimes in:"I asked Mike Cawood, UA’s chief PR guy, about David Harvey and Jermaine Lindsey. He said he won’t know until June 18. As I’ve said before, losing both to academics would be a major hit to a Zips offense that is shaping up nicely. I’ll keep working to confirm or dispell the rumors."http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/zips/Sounds like it ain't over yet.. but fat lady is clearing her throat... maybe they are taking summer classes to bring GPA up???

Cap'n you are usually the first one to talk about the apathetic fans and the lack of vision in the fan base.
True 'dat.
You've got issues with all the folks that don't want to dream big
True 'dat.
and the people on this string are merely pointing out a big issue with JD.
They're welcome to do so. But I'm also premitted to expand on the topic, or to add an alternative point of view. What good is a thread if all it presents is 19 individual posts all saying the same thing?
They are dreaming big they are dreaming of bigger schools success rates of keeping these kids active.
Bigger schools don't necessarily have better success rates. You need only look at some of John Cooper's graduation rates (only a local example, there are many others). Cooper's problems are the reason OSU increased their academic entrance requirements. Similarly, JD admitted he reviewed the retention of his first few classes and subsequently made changes in his recruiting approach. If JD admitted he was enamoured by some 6' 5" 285 lb DL's and 4.38 WR's who didn't turn out to be all that interested in school…and he subsequently adapted and signed a highly-rated class based upon this revised plan…what more can you ask? If JD were hiding under a rock pretending there was not an issue to address, I would be concerned. That is not the case. He acknowledged it and addressed it.
Quit comparing JD to Owens. We discussed in another thread that we shouldn't compare him to poor coaches from the past.
Why not? In this thread someone mentioned Owens' approach of recruiting local kids from Stark County…typically guys with few if any D1 offers…mixed in with major out-of-state talent was a good mix. I simply pointed out that Owens' faced the same issues that Brookhart does. For every "local" Jay Rohr success, there was a "local" Kyle Fromholtz bust…for every Bobby Hendry and Tony McCray, there were EJ Lilly's and Marcus Sanders. People are acting like Brookhart's mediocre player retention involving his first couple classes @ UA is something unheard of. It isn't. Owens and Faust faced the same issues. As a board "old-timer" it is important toss out a little history and facts where applicable. They apply here.
It's like saying I just bought a sweet Toyota Yaris and then saying well it's better than the Chevy Aveo.
Ok.
No more Owens comparisons that's all I ask. Tell me about Tressel or some coach we should aspire to and their track record of keeping talent.
Why would you want to compare JD with Tressel. Compare player arrest records too if you'd like to compare graduation rates of the two programs. OSU and UA are both D1, but their situations are world's apart.OSU has a choice when recruiting a DL. Take the one with the 6' 5", 285 lb kid with the 3.09GPA and a 4.7 40 time, or the 6'4", 295 lb kid with the 3.25GPA, but with a 4.6 40 time. When a mid-major is recruiting a DL it is frequently faced with the choice of the 6' 5", 300 lb kid with the 2.1GPA and the 4.7 40 time, or the 6' 2" 245 lb kid with the 3.0 GPA and a 4.6 40 time…but with the potential to grow…maybe….If it were easy, everyone would be Boise State. It isn't. JD is a new D1 head coach. A lot of what he has done in Akron has been highly successful. We have some great talent on our roster, and more on the way via the 2007 class. I'm not all that concerned with the guys that have left. The problem was addressed and the guys that remain…yes, somehow we can still field a team after all those departures... are a lot of fun to watch.Just a final "Food for Thought" point:Say Harvey is gone. We got one great year out of him and he bolted. How is that different than OSU getting Greg Oden for 1 year as a "sham" student athlete? His last quarter at OSU he took two classes, one being "History of Rock and Roll." Harvey gets bashed for leaving school but Oden jersey's sell like hotcakes. If Harvey would rather work construction than go to school, and Oden would rather play NBA hoops than go to school…what's the difference?F Ke.n.t.

"Harvey gets bashed for leaving school but Oden jersey's sell like hotcakes. If Harvey would rather work construction than go to school, and Oden would rather play NBA hoops than go to school…what's the difference?"That is apples and oranges and you know it. The only reason Oden ever went to college is because it is now required. In the past it wasn't.If Harvey was leaving after a year to go make millions as a top 3 pick in the draft, that is a little different than quitting to go work at McDonalds because you can't make the grades in college. If you think the two are comparable, that is your choice. However, they aren't.
