Z.I.P.
Does anyone out there in the Nation know when the U dropped its men's tennis team? I remember having a classmate from El Salvador, who was a member of the team back in the early 80s. This just popped into my mind, and I couldn't remember hearing anything on this -- I do remember the men's swimming team was dropped when I was a student -- before the new natatorium was built. I think we also had wrestling about that time too. What other sports have been dropped?
Zipmeister
Back around 1970 I remember the mens swim team had to let a couple of females join the team because there was no womens swim team at UA. As it turned out neither lasted until the first meet, so they never participated in an official event. Just wondering...Does the U now allow male tennis players or swimmers to participate with the womens teams?
Zips fan
I believe that the men's swim team was suspended in 1985 with the promise to be reinstated after the new pool was complete. When the pool was finished the team was never reinstated. The men's tennis team was dropped after the 1997-1998 season. Men are not allowed to participate on women's varsity teams. skip-zip
I wonder if any of this has to do with the newer NCAA regulations that require schools to have as many women's sports as men's sports?
MDZip
I was part of the last UA Wrestling team. It was dropped after the 80-81 season. There was a pretty valiant effort to save it but it ended up as a club sport then.
