Men's soccer to face Penn State Sunday in their second match of the Penn State Nike Classic

Sept. 18, 2004

AKRON, Ohio - Delayed by a day due to inclement weather, the Akron and Ohio State men's soccer teams took to the pitch Saturday afternoon at the Penn State Nike Classic with the Zips coming away a 3-1 winner to remain unbeaten at 4-0-1. The loss drops the Buckeyes to 1-3-1 on the season.

The Zips jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead, starting with sophomore Sinisa Ubiparipovic's (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Illinois-Chicago) first career goal at 18:58. His shot from 30 yards out landed in the bottom left corner of the net for the score.

It was a 2-0 lead at 32:43 when senior Hans Jorgen Haugland (Bergen, Norway/Askøy Videregaende) received the ball from Ross McKenzie (Whangamata, New Zealand/Mount Albert) and shot the ball into the lower left corner from 15 yards out. Alex Odwell (Northampton, England/Wellingborough) closed out the Akron scoring in the 83rd minute with his team-leading fourth goal of the season, sliding yet another shot into the lower left corner past OSU goalkeeper Casey Latchem.

Akron narrowly missed its fourth shutout of the season when Taylor Korpieski put the Buckeyes on the board at 88:23 on a shot from 18 yards out. UA goalkeeper Justin Christafaris picked up his fourth win of the season, tallying five saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Zips face host Penn State on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. to close out tournament action. The Nittany Lions were 2-1 winners in overtime over Virginia Tech.

Best of luck to Chief and the Zippers in their warm-up for next week's trip to the Northwest. For them to win, the blue and gold will have to find a way to get the ball past #9. Kenji Treschuk fullback of Moanalua HS, jus'down the street from me. He's a scoring defender who can really put a physical clamp on the opposing center forward.

My apologies to all who were expecting the Zip in Paradise to bring his full lungs to the University of Washington. I am detained by business of a non-futbol nature. Another reason to overthrow capitalism and replace with a democracy of futbol players and fans.

Anybody who goes, mention my name in Seattle. Make sure to duck about then.

Yeah, it's too bad that Akron men's "football" could beat the f'n All Universe Team and nobody would give two shits. It's almost like trying to take pride in the fact that our debate team wasted Harvards. It sounds great, but who really cares??

I think that a lot of people know about the soccer teams success. Unfortunately, and I am one of these people, I just don't get as excited about Soccer as I do for Football. I think that'll be chaging in the next 5-10 years though 'cause it seems like all the kids are playing soccer nowadays.
