UA Fan Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 "In precisely 772 days," he said, "we will gather again about 200 yards from here under blue skies, marching band in full blare, as it leads are team, our students, and our fans across this campus into a gleaming glass and brick stadium."I'm not sure exactly what it means but should be interesting.http://media.www.buchtelite.com/media/stor...d-2928782.shtml Quote
BZip_08 Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Isn't blaring a bad thing?!Some how I think Dr P was not in marching band... it's just a hunch. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 So, for the first game, is he saying that everyone will meet somewhere on campus and follow the band through campus to the stadium? That would be kinda cool! We could follow the band onto the field, there would be a short presentation, and then they would let everyone take their seats to watch the pregame! It would be restricted to current students, season ticket holders, and administration. It would be as if they were showing the new house to the owners. Quote

Because let's face it Alumni donations help The University of Akron quite a bit. Quote

How many Alumni would come out of the woodwork to get in on such an event. There are Alumni who support the University, and Alumni who haven't been to UA since graduation. Maybe a minimum donation would be required.....like the cost of season tickets? Quote
zip81 Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 I would think the alumni who would be there are the 7 or so thousand who are the only ones who have been going to the games at the bowl...win or lose, rain or shine....unlike 9/10th of the students. Quote

Yep. There are about 50 students that go to every home game they can, myself included. That number should increase two-hundred fold with the stadium being on campus. Even more if there will be beer allowed. The whole "dry campus" thing could really hurt attendance in the future. Of course, if they do allow beer in the stadium, that might be the first step to getting an on-campus bar. Quote
Big Zip Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 200 * 50 = 10,000 students when the stadium is on campus. That would be impressive. If that were true how would you explain the 100s that attend the basketball games -- that is on campus. This thing is going to fill up with help of the community -- not sure the students are going to come marching in to fill the stadium. At least their track record at basketball games doesn't suggest as much. Quote

I meant to say that we would get around 2,000 students, so it would increase fourty fold. Although, I certainly wouldn't complain if 10,000 students showed up. Maybe for greek night or something.Basketball is not a big draw for not only students, but alumni as well, because this is a football dominated region. If about 100 students attend an average basketball game, and the same ratio of alumni-to-students showed up for basketball games as football games, we would have to cram nearly 14,000 people into the JAR. As a precentage of attendance, students support the basketball team far better than the football team. Quote
zen Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 alumni and community will fill it up, and then when the zips have a great season and sellouts happen, students jump on the bandwagon will start complaining that they can't buy tickets. lol Quote
skip-zip Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Zen...we can only hope things turn out that way. The first couple of years will certainly see nice crowds, and I hope that it is not followed by a return to apathy. And those large crowds will indeed come from the community. I'm not quite sure how much the student attendance will grow considering that we will still be, in large part, a commuter school. As an alum and faithful attendee over the the years, I appreciate the invitation to line up behind the band on campus, and enter the stadium for pregame festivities. But unfortunately, that will cut into prime tailgaiting time for me. Quote

If the first game is at 1:00, I'll make it up after the game. Quote
Buckzip Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 I'll be there. Sounds like a great idea. Quote
