When I went to UA it was a complete commuter school. They had just closed off the street the Library is on. Forgot the name. But is was still sort of a depressing campus. I had some friends that went to BG. I used to think that was such a nicer campus and I was jealous of their campus. I never really had the chance to enjoy the college campus atmosphere. Hanging at the Splash, Sun and Town House was about as good as it got.Well, the other day I drove by campus and actually parked and walked around campus. Wow has this turned into a beautiful school. With the new stadium coming along it will only be more and more like a campus atmosphere. Like I said, I am jealous. I wish I had the beautiful new student union instead of that skanky student center. Of course I always liked Stoddards ice cream. The Student wellness center is gorgeous. I have been through other times, but this time I actually paid attention and started feeling old and jealous.

Earth Science. I think I had Dr Friola on the TV for that class at Leigh Hall.Or maybe that was biology.Does Dr. Hockman still teach TV MUM class?(what a joke that was)The Chuckery. All I remember about that place is the upper part where we would blow off class and play euker all day. :D3-2 beer. I can't believe we used to drink that stuff. Talk about being desperate for beer......

Wasn't Leigh Hall the Education Building?yes, 3-2 beer. We could get high test Wiedemann and Goebel at the University Party store cause they didn't card. :D Remember when our ID cards had raised numbers like credit cards?Well, a certain and current high-profile member of the athletic department took a razor blade and carefully cut the "9" off of 1959, turned it upsidedown and glued it as a "6" so I could buy hi beer!Very creative! :thumb:

Youse shudda been there when both Buchtel & Carroll Sts cut thru the campus, or maybe when it was a City school, like when I started. ROOKIES!!!!!!!!!! That it's a nice campus doesn't bother me at all-- just glad it is as nice as it is.

I was :D Yes, the campus is looking very nice.Remember the old fire station where the JAR now sits? And that little mail room inbetween the Student Center and Simmons Hall?Good memories.

Well, compared to you old timers, I have nothing to bitch about. I just remember Peggy comming into Rob's and saying that they were working on getting the concrete steps infront of GSC fixed...they had been closed for over a year. As soon as I leave, Boom, they put 300 million into the place. My wife and I don't even feel like we know the place anymore. I heard the major reason for closing Buchtel Ave back in the day was because too many students were getting hit by cars! Is this true?

As someone who used to lift weights in the hot humid air behind the bleachers in the natatorium using sweaty rusty iron weights, that new rec-fitness center makes me extremely jealous.

I remember that stupid little mail room. I would check my mail box once or twice a semester and it was just full of crap. Of course I am sure there was even more crap than I found because the floor was covered with papers too. When we weren't in the Chuckery playing eucker, we would go up to the Hilltopper. I think that's what is was called. We would play paper football. Remember that? The thing I remember more than anything at UA was when I would park in the Exchange parking deck. I was taking night classes and I would have to walk from the deck to the center of campus and to Olin Hall. I will always remember the night time winter wind tunnel that formed between the 2 Schrank Halls. I still get chilled bones when I think about that.Ah the good old day at the U. I miss them. However, like I said earlier. I am extremely jealous, yet proud of what my Alma Mater has turned into.

That is probably true about kids getting hit by cars. To this day, my wife and I still refer to anyone walking slowly across the street as UA students. When we were students, we always commented how it seemed that everyone crossing intersections was walking intentionally slow to hold up traffic. It was especially bad at the intersections around Spicer Hall. For any true older Akron Alum, you know that Spicer Hall is a cuss word. When I was a student, I would rather go to the dentist for a root canal then have to go into Spicer Hall. Once they started the call in registration it was a little better, but when you had to go into that death trap, it hurt bad...... :mad_flame:

Remember those big computer read outs they would tape to the wall of Spicer so you could see how many openings there were in each class? What a pain!I remember going up to those little pay windows at the end of the hall and putting my last two semesters on credit card!!!Money got pretty tight there at the end.

This is good stuff.....Crossing Buchtel and Carroll was especially challenging when you were walking back to the dorms from the Exchange Street bars late at night. Especially after 25 cent draft beer night at the Townhouse. We would always hear stories about people getting hit.Between classes, I always remember the intersection of Carroll and Brown and the intersection of Buchtel and Brown being swamped with people. If you were driving a car, you'd really have difficulty getting through those intersections of that time. Because, of course, nobody paid much attention to the "don't walk" sign. Who can forget scheduling at Spicer Hall? You'd read that wall and see that there were openings for a class, and then go rush over to the appropriate line to try to get it. That was quite a high-tech. scheduling system, let me tell ya.Recreation facilities? Did we have any back then? The outdoor basketball courts behind the dining hall were about the only recreation facilities we had access to all the time.

The one nice thing about the good old days when streets ran through campus was the possibility of close-in-parking if you had a single horse buggy. I remember John Heisman always used to get ticketed for parking his two horse rig in the one horse lot.

Yes, I remember all that. How about the buggy whip making class in East Hall? One good thing about Buchtel Ave. being open was cruising by Spanton to see the girls catching some rays. :thumb:

Almost stepped out into the path of a Metro bus on Buchtel underneath the student center overhang. To this day I have no idea why I decided not to take that step - I can still feel the rush of air as the bus passed me by. My mailroom memories are the same - my slot was only ever filled with junk and the floor was always a mess of papers. Good place to duck into on a cold winter day if walking through the wind tunnel east/west from one end of campus to the other.Recreational facilities ... nope, don't recall any. What a difference Doc Proenza has made. Makes me want to take a class just to get back down there again. I wonder what the space will be used for once Memorial Hall and Carroll disappear ... ;)

there would be enough room (and about a 15% larger footprint) if it runs E-W instead of N-S...
A replacement for the JAR perhaps? :D

How 'bout this-- I an remember the houses where Jackson Field is, being occupied by their owners. They were ripped down, bulldozed, and leveled, the drainage problems there are probably caused by the former basements holding the water. With ball ammunition, lock and load, and, of course, :screwks:

There is no way they will build a new arena to replace the JAR. It is not that old. You would have to be dumb to tear down a newer arena like that and replace it when it is not that old. Oh wait, didn't they do that in Richfield? :D

About one student a year would be seriously injured after being hit by a car crossing Buchtel Avenue in the early 80's. In 1983, a young woman was killed by a car and that is when they started seriously discussing closing it. We did close the street in 1981 when we had the May Day celebration there. And it might not have been a campus improvement but at least no one past 1984 ever had to use punch cards to write computer programs ever again. :)

Who said to tear down the JAR?We are talking about tearing down Memorial and Carol Halls.Build a new arena there and keep the JAR for Phys Ed and stuff.

HOLY COW!! Some of you guys are REALLY OLD! ;) In the spring, the one thing I remember walking back to Grant from Robs was that when walking out of the buildings you would brace yourself for the cold wind. You would take a few steps, and then realize, it wasn't coming. It took me probably 2-3 weeks to shake that reaction. I always tell my wife when we go back, and I step into the Engineering buildings, I get a knot in my stomach :puke: and start to worry if I've gotten all my homework done.
