Guest Guest
This is the best news for Zips Sports! The only thing better would be if it had a roof on it and they could convert it to about 8,000 - 10,000 for Basketball, when they out grow the JAR in a few years. Let's hope this happens. Go Zips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zipsrifle
With Proenza's record, I think it'll happen. So, the big question is, can we rip the bleachers out of the Rubber Bowl after the last game?
zipsbandman
Help is on the way! This facility would be the crown jewel on campus, and it would help us expand. They are already building dorms along exchange. The location is perfect if they can get it next to the fieldhouse. This news could not have come at a better time in the midst of all these attendence threats. By far, this is the best news I have heard all year for the university. Guest ***GUEST_racer
i think a donwtown stadium would do wonders for the zips program ,and downtown economy. the rubber is outdated ,and has nothing around it for a game day experince. they have plenty bars resturants, ect in downtown now if it is ( a new stadium)planned right.they may be able to bring a pro soccer team to help expenses down the road. the bottom line is though if the team does not win people will not show up.it does not matter how new the stadium is ,or where its at.we had 7k at homcing because no one wanted to see two one win teams.i think a new stadium may boost attendace for a year, or two after that its still a wins and losses that matter. Zipsrifle
Isn't there a minimum requirement of a 30,000 seat stadium for D1-A? Hard to believe that they would put all this money into a state of the art fieldhouse and a new stadium only to botch up something like this. From the article, the statement is "20,000 permanent seats". Add in the presidents suite, lounge, and luxury boxes and my guess is that the total number of seats balloons to about 23,000. I guess they account for the other 7000 seats by sitting in the grass? Who wants to sit in the grass, especially if it's raining! What I am thinking is that the grass area will, in actuality, be seating. They just aren't pitching it at this time. Maybe they are waiting to see what comes of the 15,000 rule. If at the time of construction we are solidly a D1-A school, it becomes seating. If we are demoted to D1-AA, it stays grass. The other option is that they intend it to be 30,000 the whole time and are just keeping it cheap at this point to drum up local support. Bottom line, it needs to be designed intelligently, in case of future expansion. Looks like this is the case. If this program takes a serious up turn under JD, we may be needing 45,000 10 years from now. Don't want to have a patchwork stadium. I don't know if I like the proposal. I want a stadium that feels like we are playing college football and not high school. An enclosed endzone is, in my mind, a requirement! I'd like to see something closer to CMU and not Can't State. I already have a suggestion for a name.....Proenza Field. This guy is a GOD! Oh yea, think there is any room in there for a new Rifle Range? Guest Guest
If the proposal went through this year, how long before the new stadium is completed? Two years? A year? Will any of the current players ever play in it??
GP1
If the proposal went through today, it would take over two years to complete the stadium. Working drawings from an architect would have to be designed, the stadium package bid and then the stadium built. If it is going to be a metal stadium similar to Crew Stadium in Columbus, the time to build it will take much less time. If it is concrete like Can't State, it will take more time. How about if we get the drawings from Crew Stadium (27,000 seats) and build it without the upper deck on one side. That would give us approximately 20,000 seats with room for expansion on one side? The article makes a really good point. The cost to fix up the Rubber Bowl would be extreme. A man who works for me sells concrete restoration (the Rubber Bowl would be a concrete restoration project) and we discussed this very issue one day. Typically, the cost of a concrete restoration project comes in twice the estimate depending on the age of the building. The RB is extremely old and has had little done to it over the years. It would need earth work under the stadium, new seats, new locker rooms, new score board, new press box, new bathrooms for crying out loud, painted, etc. Concrete damage is a mystery until the work starts, so the cost remains unknown in addition to the above items. A new stadium is the way to go and in the grand scheme of things, $60 million is not that much money. I don't think U of A getting moved down to 1-AA is an option for the school. This new stadium is a must. Let's face it, the RB is a dump and has been for as long as I have lived in Akron (18 years). Lock the doors and abandon it, it will not be long till it falls down on it's own.
Dr Z
Who wants to sit in the grass, especially if it's raining! Virginia has the same thing, it is AWESOME. This is a GREAT idea, trust me. How many games has it rained at the Rubber Bowl in the last say, five years?
